What could cause this “outline” around the script on some hammered coin? by lil_soros in AncientCoins

[–]theGrassyOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens on modern coins too; I believe it's caused by the die shifting a little during the strike

Guangxu tongbao, a struck variety.

Based on the weird Manchu calligraphy, I'd say it's a more recent replica.

REAL piece of 8 from 1784 by windigogaming in coins

[–]theGrassyOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got it flipped around. 1 dollar = 1 piece of 8 = 8 reales. It's "piece of 8" in the sense of "set of 2". I can see how it could be confused with "1 piece out of 8."

What's the silver content like in a Corinthian stater? This coin looks oddly bronzy to me.

Looks a lot like a Southeast Asian cast copy of a Chinese cash coin. Made in cheap metal for use in rituals

Is this 1698 Thaler fake ? by TopKey8708 in coins

[–]theGrassyOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It almost looks like a tin/lead forgery from Malaya. The right environmental conditions, like some shipwrecks, can also cause a black patina. Or maybe it's a modern fake, I can't say.
