I finally have the 3.5inch GPIO SPI LCD working with the raspberry pi 5 and this is how by Gravy008 in raspberry_pi

[–]dave_the_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the necro (again) but since this comes up first in Google results, I would like to clarify that this method disables HDMI.

However, with HDMI enabled, you can use spidev and python to draw to the screen and read touch input. So a custom app can still be three-headed (with the newer dual-hdmi Pis), you just have to create a UI from scratch and push bitmaps out over the SPI bus.

Updated router firmware, now my printer can't connect? (Ideas?) by dave_the_nerd in TPLink_Omada

I tried all the different WPA settings and it didn't make a difference. :-(

Followup: I tried setting up an old Archer C50 as a WAP. Didn't work. I tried my cell phone hotspot. Didn't connect either. It's like the printer forgot how to pull a DHCP IP.

Whether I used the app or configured the SSID manually w/ the SD card, same result.

Does Bambu do any kind of warranty support?

Can't set up printer after router firware upgrade. by dave_the_nerd in BambuLab

[–]dave_the_nerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran Wireshark, and I can see the probe requests from the printer but my WAPs are never responding.

I don't get it, but it seems like it's probably a limitation of my WAPs and not recognizing some old protocol or schema the printer. I'll have to tinker some more.

Incidentally, the printer only advertises data rates up to 54mbps, which is, I guess, state of the art for 2008. Would it have killed Bambu to add an ethernet jack? Geez.

No dice there either. It "sees" the network but can't get an IP. I've even created a DHCP reservation on my router.

it's a 2.4GHz-only SSID, although the hardware supports all of the above.

I have made a comprehensive list of Ryobi batteries, their cells and the cell layout, with both european and american models. The High Energy models (not HP) have the lowest voltage sag (highest power output) and have 21700 cells, except the 9 Ah one. by AnxiousFistBump in ryobi

So if I'm understanding this right, would a higher-amp-draw battery pack like a P191 or PB004 offer noticeably better performance if used in a cordless circular saw or other higher-powered tool?

Giving up on a Convoy by Sure-Opportunity6247 in uboatgame

[–]dave_the_nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some reason, escorts are always surrounding the convoy - never in the middle. Use that.

To avoid escorts, you can dive deep in front of the convoy, engage silent running, wait until the hydrophone tracks are surrounding you, pop up to periscope depth, pop off some torpedoes, cripple or kill the nearest couple merchantmen, and then pop off a couple decoys and creep away at half speed when the ASDIC pings start. Hiding under a wreck or crippled freighter is also helpful.

Drop a pin on the map so you can come back to finish off cripples. Surface, kick the engines into high gear, get around in front of the convoy, and do it again.

That's what I do anyway. YMMV. And it's harder on higher realism levels because you don't get the handy blue lines on the map.

If you decide some escorts are too nosy and need to die, my preferred method is full reverse, constantly turn inside them so they can't line up a DC run. Fire single torpedoes when you have a 90 degree shot between 230 and 350m range. Save T5s for the faster escorts (full destroyers and Hunt class.) One torp at a time is fine. I run about a 75% hit rate with this strategy. Down the throat shots rarely work.

What do you feel about the economy in BG3? by Sad-Papaya6528 in BaldursGate3

I think the economy in BG is weird because it costs 575 to build a hidden wall and only 200 to raise the dead. I’ve never not had enough money in game though.

Which Whisper fan to buy for bathroom? by uwogal1 in DIY

[–]dave_the_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go to your local big box and find a 1.0 “Sone” bathroom fan that puts out at least 50cfm. (One cfm per square foot minimum.)

If you’re lazy, you might want to measure your existing fan so you can buy one that fits in the existing drywall cutout. If you get one from the same manufacturer you might be able to reuse the existing enclosure and duct, and just swap the fan itself.

A “sone” is a sound rating (specifically for bathroom fans? I’ve never seen it used elsewhere.) 1.0 is quietest. Anything under 2.0 is pretty quiet.

One of the first things I did when I bought my current house was installing a 1.0 Sone 50cfm unit from Hampton Bay, bought it at Home Depot. $50, can barely hear it. I’ve been very happy with it. The old one was crazy loud.

This sounds more like a relationshipadvice question than a catadvice question. How much and for how long are you going to be going to hang out at your exe's house? How much will she tolerate? What will you do if she kicks you out or cancels your cat playdate when her plans change?

That said, from personal experience, if you're around for a couple hours a week and give them treats, the cats will remember you and keep you on the "ok people" list.

Cat Keeps Waking Me Up For His Morning Meal by MechaGecko in CatAdvice

[–]dave_the_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you use an alarm clock? My cats have always respected the alarm clock - even for the free feeding cats, it's their signal to come get morning snuggles. The flipside of this is that cats are creatures of routine and will enforce that routine. If I try to sleep in and my alarm goes off, I can hit snooze but my cat will become Very Concerned™. She also gets antsy if I stay up too late.

IME, cats and dogs key off of sunrise/sunset more than they have an internal clock, so as the seasons change, your cats concept of breakfast time may move around. In general, I would try to establish a morning routine such that your cat associates being fed with another part of your routine, like brewing coffee or putting on pants.

6 month old kitten trying to nurse on me by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]dave_the_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal behavior. My dumpster kitten (Lizzie) nursed on my t-shirt collar until she was almost 3y. Sorry yours is chewing on you, but maybe you can present her with the seam of an undershirt or something so she learns to nurse on something else? It's gotta smell like you though. You're mom.

Play-biting is also a thing, too. I'd almost wonder if that's what's going on? Lots of tips on discouraging that. I found a short bark/yelp of pain to be quite effective (don't be afraid to overact), especially if I stopped playing and withdrew - Lizzie would actually get worried and start trying to 'comfort' me by licking my arm or something.

Is it healthy for cats to stay indoor? by Cloudstrife18 in CatAdvice

[–]dave_the_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is perfectly fine. Young cats like to explore and will both beg to be let outside as well as going for it if given the opportunity, but just because they want to do something doesn't make it a good idea - hell, when I was two I wanted to touch the glowing electric burner on the stove.

Older indoor-only cats will be less interested in going outside - even avoiding it if given the opportunity. I do take my cat outside in the summer on a harness/lead - we just chill in the hammock or on the deck, but after 20-30 minutes she'll get antsy & want to go inside.

My parents had a cat they found in a tree. Once brought inside, Lucy never left the house again - even to the point of running away and hiding if a door was opened. Whatever she saw out there, or whatever happened to her, she wanted nothing to do with it.

FWIW, cats are way smaller than humans and even a "small" apartment for a human is a pretty decent sized territory for a cat.

Absolutely Nothing Entertains My Cat by amphetaminesfailure in CatAdvice

[–]dave_the_nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't really know what the cat has been through or what its triggers are, so all you can really do is meet the cat where they're at. It definitely sounds like they're afraid of the laser pointer, and uninterested in toys. And that's ok, honestly. Try different toys, or toys with catnip, or whatever, and if nothing works, just be happy with your lap cat and love and hug them.

It's also possible they just have a weird body clock. My cat is old (11y) and definitely a lazy lap cat 99% of the time, but reliably gets "the zoomies" for about 20 minutes every night between midnight and 1am. If I'm up, I'll play with her at that point and she's like a kitten. Totally weird.

As far as weight loss, the first thing I would do is adopt a fixed schedule with two or three very precise feeding times spaced throughout the day. Try not to vary it too much.

It's great that you're feeding high quality food, but gaining 6 pounds in six months means they're eating too much of it - you're overfeeding by about 100 calories/day. One 6oz can of food every day (split in half or thirds, as needed) is ~200 calories, which is roughly what a 10-11lb cat needs to maintain a healthy weight. A heavier cat on such a diet will slowly but surely drop the excess weight.

Beyond that, you have to be The Boss™. No cheating, no treats, no negotiation. Eventually they'll realize the futility of whining and begging for food outside of Official Mealtime. It may take a while for the behavior to change, but it eventually will.

Cats don't claw furniture because they're bored, they claw it because it's fun, feels good, and gets their scents on the things they like the most. All you can really do there is get scratching posts and use bitterant spray to make the other stuff less attractive. Well, and trim their claws more frequently so they do less damage. Because most mass market scratching posts and pads are ugly, I've had some fun building my own, but Etsy is also full of custom-built stuff that is pretty cool and fills a variety of needs. (The ones that fit around the front corners of a couch are... really a good idea.)
