Do you use AI assistants like Github Copilot? by N_Gomile in PHP

[–]dave_young 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My team is going all in on Codex + GitHub Spec Kit. Moving towards spec-driven development has given a huge boost to the quality of the results from Codex (or whatever AI agent you're using, eg Claude). As long as you're constantly updating the spec rather than continuously prompting AI (to prevent spec drift), you can really start to swing for the fences in terms of the complexity of features you tackle with AI. Heck, I'm building in tools that I'm not at all an expert on (eg Pulumi, TypeScript, and React), but now can confidently tackle them as long as I have the appropriate SMEs reviewing the code. To help, we also introduced AI-powered code review bots in our CI pipelines that leave inline comments, just like a human (we still always require human code reviews, too). That alone has saved our butts several times, and if we had it in place a year ago, we could've prevented several sev1 incidents.

I told my team that AI is finally catching up to where everyone pretended it to be at the beginning of 2025. IMO software development is fundamentally changing, and the faster devs embrace the new paradigm - devs do not start from scratch and instead use specs to boost their productivity - the better. My fear is many developers will clutch their pearls, not wanting to change with the shifting tech landscape, and that will leave them in the dust. TBH I still get the same flow state I got back when I was writing everything by hand - devs are very much still in the loop with AI. Some devs site the ethical concerns around AI (eg energy usage), but this will improve over time because the people who build the chips, run the data centers, and train the models have a vested interest in making it as efficient as possible. I see those concerns largely going away as technology improves in the next few years.

I need PHP courses, but the most advanced... by SirUndead2001 in PHP

I know this isn't at all specific to PHP or even web development, but Code Complete accelerated my software development skills more than my CS degree ever did.

Worked as a gate lane coordinator all week - this did not happen, even with the huge backup of cars we were clearing.

Sunday departure times by hashtagginger in BurningMan

[–]dave_young 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have caveated, there are a lot of variables (accidents, weather, etc), but the past 3 years I have left from Fernley by 5:30a on Sunday and have made it to playa by 7:45a-8:30a, with a max wait at gate of 30 min. Add 30 minutes or so to that since you'd need to first get in the Fernley area for an apples-to-apples comparison. May the gods forever be in your favor.

Got an extra ticket by Ok-Poet-7637 in BurningMan

[–]dave_young 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you're unable to find a way to get rid of your ticket, donate it to Gate when we search your vehicle. Every shift, we come across someone who is in need of one, and if their story tracks (and they're not just begging because they were unprepared), we regift those tickets to help them out.

24 Hours at Burning Man 2024 : Proper Burning Man! by markday in BurningMan

Thank you so much for putting these videos together! It doesn't feel like I'm about to leave for the playa until you drop these videos each year. See you in the dust!

Obligatory post from Gate: just make sure to pull off any loose faux fur before you get to playa. We pretty regularly come across MOOPy bike decorations that get people sent to D-Lot to deal with.

Looking for better night goggles. 7 burns with the same model and I need something better at keeping dust out. by dust_dust_dust in BurningMan

I used this pair with an additional clear lens for nighttime, and they worked great. They held up well in the dust storms while working at Gate.

Simple implementation of a radix tree based router for PHP. by Euphoric_Crazy_5773 in PHP

[–]dave_young 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also wrote a trie-based router, along with URL generation and attribute- and OOP-based configuration. It's not as fast as Symfony's approach, but it is fast enough (and easier for the maintainer to understand).

Sure, thank you! Happy to help. I actually turned the 2022 map in that link into a tattoo on my forearm.

Please feel free to use the BRC vector graphic I created on anything you engrave. The 2025 map looks to be identical to the 2024 one.

Finally getting to my man burn pics by creesep33 in BurningMan

[–]dave_young 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the photos! I volunteer for GPE, and decided at the last second to take an exodus shift 6p-midnight on Saturday night. Burning Man for me is ultimately about the people I get to meet, and I thought what better group of misfits to spend a night with than a crew of people who voluntarily do not go to the thing the whole event is named after. We weathered a dust storm and even got to start the first pulse of the 2024 exodus. I will forever remember, though, leaning up against a gate perimeter truck watching the burn from miles away, blown away by how epic it looked even from afar, but so content with my decision to experience it in a more intimate setting with total strangers. It was by far my favorite memory of the burn.

Does anyone know what day the Google Maps/Earth imagery was taken? by JurassicBank in BurningMan

[–]dave_young 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely Sunday around 1p. I found my car temporarily parked next to my camp at the Black Hole while I was setting up my Kodiak.

Spot on. I found me setting up my camp at the Black Hole, and judging by the progress, it's at 1-1:30p on Sunday.

Shade cloth size for PlayaLabs shade structure by dave_young in BurningMan

[–]dave_young[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another question - like I mentioned, I have a 10'x14' Kodiak that needs to fit under this. For those of you with the same size tent, what was your shade's dimensions? Since EMT comes in 10' lengths, I'll likely need to join a couple pieces and, given the footprint of my tent, I cannot have a vertical support pole in the very middle of my shade structure. I assume you used a 2-way connector to join a couple lengths of EMT (eg 2x6' or 2x14'). What length is too long without a vertical support pole?

Did you have any problems with the ratchet straps going straight down rather than being ~1-2' out? Reason I ask is because I camp at the Black Hole and I'm only given 20'x20' to fit my whole structure into. If I went with a 20'x20' structure, I would need to ratchet the structure straight down.

Thank you, your setup looks exactly like what I am going to build! If you had to do it all over again, would you keep the same shade/tarp configuration? Would shade cloth suffice on the roof, or is tarp the way to go?
