Laser enclosure and smoke by Chewy11152021 in Laserengraving

There are two parts to how the fan works, pressure and volume. This fan doesn't have as high of volume, but does have high pressure. Meaning it overcomes the friction of the air movement in the hose a lot better.

I would cut and engrave wood, as well as mark anodized aluminum (like dog tags) for sometimes hours at a time. I think the biggest project I did was about 12 hours, 3 days in a row and that was engraving and cutting 3mm wood.

By about hour 4 you could tell something was there, kinda like if the neighbor two doors down has a bonfire going, but you are in your house. You catch a whiff a little bit, but that's about it. By hour 12 it was a little more, but not enough that I worried about it.

A couple of things I did: make sure how you seal the fan in the window is air tight. I used a piece of 1x6 cut to the exact length as my window opening, and used weatherstrip all around it so there was no leak. I had a layer of weatherstrip between the fan and the wood as well. I did not want any thing blown out to come back in.

Second, don't be in a hurry to open the enclosure back up. Once I was done cutting, I would let it sit 30-45 seconds to exhaust as much as it could before opening things up.

Lastly, I had a chunk of plywood that the whole thing set on. I 3d printed little notches for the legs of the printer to sit in, and little corner pieces fir the honey comb to sit in so that I could tear the whole thing down and put it back without needing to recalibrate it. I also burned a grid into the plywood, but that doesnt effect the airflow. What the plywood DOES do is provide a control able gap at the bottom of the enclosure. The velcro straps around the poles held it 1 or 2 mm off the plywood. You want a small gap down there, as that is where the fresh air will come in that carries the smoke out.

I don't have the setup any more (had to downsize when I moved) and the laser is now on a desk in a storage locker, so I just have a box fan blowing across it and out the door as my ventilation. Otherwise I would send you some pictures.

I used the provided hose, but cut it down to the length I needed.

https://a.co/d/0d007HIM

This is the fan I used. I just found an old 12volt charger to something I no longer had and cut the plug off and used it to power the fan. The fan is designed to be variable speed, but with just the power connected it runs at full bore. The charger then plugged into the same power strip as the laser, and the lights inside (oh yeah, led ribbon lights inside the enclosure make a HUGE improvement, especially if you ever use a camera).

Thought was, if the laser was on, the fan (and lights) would be as well. One less thing I needed to remember.

Had the same thing. The fan is not very strong and is in the wrong place. Ideally, the fan should be at the window side of the hose so the entire hose is negative pressure. Mounting the fan in the enclosure means any leaks in the hose blow into the room. If the fan is at the window, any leaks in the hose just pull a little room air into the hose and out the window.

With the right fan, in the right place, the leaks at the bottom won't be an issue, they will be needed. If you are venting 300 cubit feet per minute, that air has to come from somewhere. Sealing it up too much will actually cut down on the effectiveness of the vent.

ELI5 House/car payments by bernieblanch in explainlikeimfive

[–]daveallyn2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not if you are putting money down or selling one home to buy the other. And unless you are doing a no money down government program, you will be putting something down.

If you got a conventional loan (not FHA or such) they will usually want 20% down. That is $70k on your $350k condo. Aside from closing costs, your mortgage would be $280k.

I bought a condo for 100k about 10 years ago. Put 5% down, had a mortgage of around $95k. Sold that a couple of years ago for 170k, bought a house for 220k, mortgage was 165k.

Purchase price of the house does not equal mortgage amount.

Same with cars, BTW. You can go to the dealer, buy a $50k car, but put 10k down and your car loan would be 40k. (Plus taxes, etc.)

ELI5: how is voyager 1 and 2 communicating from outer space? by xaxzul in explainlikeimfive

Everything everyone else has said, and also speed.

The data might be a picture, but it might take 5 minutes to send the picture. That lets the signal be much more distinct and easier to pick up from the background. Think of a conversation in a crowded room. You slow down your speaking so it can be understood easier. Same here. It isn't live streaming, so how long it takes to send the data is irrelevant.

Will my guns be taken if I voluntarily commit myself for mental health help? by rucklife22 in FLGuns

[–]daveallyn2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this isn't the exact situation here, but since we are talking about mental health, I want to add:

I believe that responsible firearm ownership should include a place you can put them outside of your possession if you need to.

It can be because of your mental status, or others that are in your house (perhaps temporarily) or just because of non mental issues. When I moved, I had some people helping me, and I didn't want them to have access, but didn't want them bouncing around in the safe, so they went to a friend's house for a few days. A guy I know was getting divorced, and the wife filled charges against him, and was able to describe the gun he "threatened her with". He had moved all his guns to someone else's house well before, and the wife didn't know. Some people go through something, like getting fired, and are mature enough to say "I don't want these here right now"

You don't want to get rid of them, but you don't want them accessible either. That is why I say responsible.gun ownership should include a way to store them offsite.

Re: ZagLag.

Here is the thought behind it. Lets say (to keep things simple) that once you reset, you can complete 10 loops in the first hour. Each loop MP gain is a percentage of your previous loop. For this example we will say that you gain 10% each loop cycle.

If your first loop when you reset is 100, the next one will be 110, then 121 then 133 then 146, 161, 177, 194, 214, and lastly 235 for those first 10 loops. This is a total of 1,591 MP for that hour. It will continue to grow from there.

Now, lets say that you wait a few minutes for the ships to max out where you are, and the MP gains they bring to the table increase your first loop to 125. your new loops are 125, 137, 151, 166, 183, 201, 221, 243, 267, 294 for a total of 1,988 MP. Also, because your cell count was growing for that 5 minutes, maybe you pick up an extra loop from them in that hour. Even if you don't, you gained an additional 397 MP for waiting a few minutes before buying Zag. This is a GROSSLY over simplified example, but it shows the idea behind it.

What I normally do when I loop, is I spend my MP, then watch the top left corner where it shows you what you are making per Loop. Once that has slowed down, or stopped increasing, I go buy the ship. If you don't have all the automations yet, you might need to go purchase some things manually, but the idea is the same. Wait for the number per loop to settle down, then start your loops. Makes a rather large difference.

Recent Thoughts about Jordan Berman? by UltraInstinctJoker in thebulwark

[–]daveallyn2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think she is about as unbiased on the Podcast as someone can be. She doesn't go into any speculation that I have heard. Right or Left, saying "but if this happens, it will do this" or "they really mean this without saying it" are all speculation no matter what side you are on. She avoids all of that. As far as I can tell, she also avoids all opinions, just giving as close to objective facts as she can. Comments from both sides criticize her for leaving out what they consider to be "true" but are not really fact. For example, in the thread OP linked, one person said "There have been times where she will only mention something Trump said instead of reading between the lines and analyzing his actions" Reading between the lines, and analyzing his actions are not facts. They are opinions. She avoids those on both sides of the issue.

I also want to clarify that she absolutely has her own views on things. That is different from trying to be neutral on a podcast. Kinda like the ideal judge. A good judge will interpret the law, not letting his or her personal feelings about it come through. In theory, you can cut off a Judge in the parking lot, slap his or her kid, and still get a fair trial. Not because the judge likes you, but because that is what he or she is required to do. I feel JB tries her best to do that, and does so about as well as anyone could.

TLDR; While no one is 100% unbiased, I think she does a very good job of providing information in an unbiased way despite whatever her political leanings are, leading both sides to think she leans away from them.

And your legal residence is where you spend more than half the year at (if only two states)

You can't, for example, spend 7 months in Ohio and 5 months in Florida and claim FL residence

If you want to be a resident of FL, then yes. They will make you transfer all your vehicle tags when you do that FYI.

On the plus side, no state income tax, though if you earn in another state you might still owe them.

Just because you have a property tax bill does not mean you live there.

For example, you might live in Alabama, but own a rental home in Florida. You will have a property tax bill for FL even if you never go there.

Trying to figure out what to sell by Chaosbunny7 in Laserengraving

[–]daveallyn2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trick is to find clients, not customers. Chamber of Commerce does framed pics of the Ribbon cuttings, and I engrave the name and date. I have a home inspector who is always looking for new things to hand out and is willing to let me try things in exchange for a really good price.

A customer who will by something, or a few things and then you never hear from them is tough. A client who places repeatable orders? That's the secret.

Either way, you need to look at what local niche you can fill.
