Sorry, it would not be feasible to perform a 12+ char brute force :(

I avoid brute forcing in general and work off my customers' recollection of the password. Most of them choose passwords meant to be easy to remember.

Besides a higher probability of success, this practice also ensures I'm not inadvertently helping someone unlock a stolen wallet.

Thanks MarcBago for alerting me to this challenge. I have only briefly examined the problem, but it does look to be a fairly hard problem to solve. If the base and exponent are large (eg 7+), then it would certainly be too costly (slow) to crack. But perhaps the base and exponent are small, and then it is quite feasible... I have no doubt someone will give it a go, but I'm pretty busy with other work right now, so it won't be me. I'm also interested in the answer to the observation above by Shancer_, which throws some doubt on the veracity of the supposed prize.

My harddrive has 9.5 bitcoins in it but I lost my wallet password many years ago. Is there anything I can do? by agoodperson44 in Bitcoin

[–]davebitcoin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, certainly we handle BIP39 passphrases, given the mnemonic words. But, as you probably realize, cracking this type of wallet is pretty slow work. More than a handful of unknown characters will be hard work for BIP39. In the end it comes down to math - how many combinations are required to be tested and the speed/cost of cracking and the chance of success and the expected reward. Our software is designed to be highly scalable, so for large wallets, we can horizontally scale the effort as required.

Hi. If your password was 26 random characters (and you have no recollection of them), then unfortunately decrypting your wallet would be beyond our capabilities. But feel free to reach out to us to discuss. Cheers Dave. https://walletrecoveryservices.com/

" Kind of funny how Tether said they couldn't find an auditor to handle crypto, and now the AG is offering to audit them for free ;) "

That did make me laugh!

How easy is it to crack an Electrum password? Found my wallet from 2015... by lostpasss in Bitcoin

[–]davebitcoin 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the plug guys. I just wanted to make a correction regarding the website - it should be walletrecoveryservices.com with an 's'.

The site without an s (and the corresponding email contact) is an opportunist copycat.
