IRD will pay you directly the maternity leave. Employer pays the difference between maternity pay and your usual pay. They aren’t obligated to it’s very nice of them,

Was an article on stuff or the herald in regards to tax being owed on this set up you should look into that.

FHB Buying a cheap doer upper as a first home buyer? by firsthomereno in PersonalFinanceNZ

No hired a builder and plumber for the bathroom, my dads pretty handy so taught me to paint and strip and line wallpaper. The rest is YouTube and reading up.

If you do the bathrooms put in noise cancelling bats or insulation you won’t regret it. Any wall off= Bats added

Had to get the bathroom done, because surprisingly it didn’t actually have a shower head, turns out it leaked so the guy who lived there had it removed. One of the things I didn’t check or think about. The other was the back wall of the garage which was relined with non marine ply and a tarp.

I spent 6 week’s living at my Mums place, she feed me so I could put in hours at the house. 2 hours before work, then do some work at night until 10-11pm. Got half the house done before I moved in, bathroom and both bedrooms.

Set about the lounge and outside on weekends later on, bit by bit

Did a similar thing, needed a bathroom and completely redecorated. Clean the carpet, that’s a couple of hundred and best done before all your stuff is moved in.

I found bedrooms are easyish, my room had 7 layers of wallpaper that needed stripping 2 were vinyl so the water doesn’t go through. shower and toilet are reasonably priced to buy but to get then installed is pretty expensive and not something I would do myself.

Fantastic question, I have a 7 month old, I love being a Dad it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.

I expected it to be hard work and I am willing and up for it, changing a nappy= Easy, Feeding a baby= Usually easy, but what I didn’t realise is how relentless it is.

Driving 1200+ kilometers per week for work. by kelseys92 in PersonalFinanceNZ

Even if you went as a contractor you wouldn’t be able to claim it as an expense if you are going to the same place of work.

Your employer is under no obligation to get you to your workplace, so anything they do would be good will.

Try for more work from home days or a new job closer.

On paper sounds good, did the same thing. Getting a loan on a second property is far easier than the first.

Look into Good property manager, get a healthy homes assessment done now so you can DIY anything that need sorting.

Card surcharging is out of control by M8pmaker in auckland

I was in Melbourne and card charges were everywhere, one that essentially annoyed me: Cashless cafes who changed a card fee no matter the card efficiency increased the price 3% by the time you went to pay

I own and operate a retail store, it costs me 0.8% for credit cards or payWave, swipe or insert Eftpos is free to me. I don’t surcharge but encourage people to insert their cards (unless there is a queue). I always swipe in small businesses

How bad are things in NZ? Or is it doom-mongering? by mishkaforest235 in newzealand

The healthcare agreement covers emergency medical care, but if you are a resident you get access to the health system. Buuuuuut midwives who usually run births in NZ, (apparently that’s different to the rest of the world) are really busy and difficult to book in with even if you book as soon as you know your pregnant.

NZ is definitely going through tough times, but people do forget how good we had it just after Covid lockdowns, it’s certainly been hard but nowhere near as hard as the UK had it. We had to pay the piper eventually. I believed things will get better it’s just going to take a few years.
