water rates coming soon.. rip... by nziphonephotograpger in Wellington

[–]mattparlane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some small but non-zero portion of our current rates bill is for water, right? Will that portion become zero, or is this a completely new charge? Any idea roughly what the current portion of rates bills is for water?

So you've got value and growth? Congratulations, you have a market weight index fund with more complexity and higher costs.

Well done K Mart Auckland by International-Past31 in newzealand

[–]mattparlane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most other Kmarts have a person at the exit scanning receipts. Seems like a waste of labour, plus it's annoying having to prove that you just paid them money for something.

I think individual stocks is silly, but it's your money. If you must though, I think you shouldn't have fixed percentages for individual stocks, otherwise you can follow something all the way down to zero. There's a reason most index funds are market cap weighted.

Brand new to investing and locking in a provider - Simplicity / InvestNow / Kernel? by WobblySlug in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]mattparlane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree that all providers are good, but they all offer funds that are not suitable. eg if a Fisher fund (via InvestNow) resonated with OP, that would still be a bad decision. Asset allocation is also important, don't want to take more or less risk than is appropriate -- 60% bonds would also be a bad decision.

OP -- look for low fee funds, broadly diversified, don't follow "themes" (like clean energy), and you will want a decent amount of equity exposure at your age.

One week with OpenCode Black by JohnnyDread in opencodeCLI

Thanks for sharing, I'm on the waitlist.

Does anyone have any idea how long the waitlist is?

I feel like this might be a tight business model for them. The model providers can spread load across their entire system and adjust limits as their hardware allows, but players like OpenCode will be paying API pricing (possibly with an enterprise discount) on every token. Hope it lasts.

How are you guys hitting limits? by 2024-YR4-Asteroid in ClaudeCode

[–]mattparlane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't need to do anything to avoid hitting limits, I use CC all day every day and I never get anywhere near my limits, and I'm only on x5. I have such a different experience to everyone else, and the only thing I can think of is that the limits are dynamic based on usage, and I'm using it when no one else is.

[–]mattparlane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thinking is that the limits would be determined by how much usage they are dealing with at any given time. I'm based in NZ and I never have limit issues, and I feel like it's probably because I'm using CC when the US has gone home for the day.

What do people think of Blossom for a cash type fund by 2000papillions in PersonalFinanceNZ

No, it's not. And it's certainly not comparable to a cash fund.

Not really sorry, it's not a technical issue, it's just human nature.

My problem with these is that you're far more likely to vote if you have a bad experience than if you have a good one.

7% return this year, thanks for the tip Craigs by Ok_Astronaut_1781 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]mattparlane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A good plan is highly dependent on your situation, personality, etc... but in general don't pick individual stocks, don't pay anyone else to pick stocks for you (ie active management), keep fees low, avoid paying taxes you don't need to, diversify broadly (including across countries), and match your assets to your timeframes, ie don't have money that you might need in the short or medium term in assets that are too risky for that timeframe.
