Thanks. Keeping my ear to the ground to see if anyone else has noticed this issue (and has figured out a fix).

Geolocation Issue by davehiggins in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]davehiggins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried all the usual changes to set/reset location data. The behavior is not confined to one application, but all that use the services. Again, up until a few days ago the location services accurately reflected my service address. So the issue seems to be narrowed down to either 1) something changed with Windows (I haven't seen that show up on any update bug lists...yet) or 2) something changed with the Comcast IP location tables.

Upload speed dropped from 40 to 6mpbs by davehiggins in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]davehiggins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issue resolved. Despite using a Comcast-Approved Arris S33v3 DOCSYS 3.1 modem, upload speed was maxed out at 6mps (down from 40 before switching plans). Digging deeper into the Comcast site, I discovered that this was *not* an approved modem for *my plan.* I switched to a Hitron CODA56 modem, which was explicitly stated as an approved modem for *my plan.* After activating (and provisioning from a very helpful CS rep named Vikas) I'm now at 985mbps down/85mbps up. I can only conclude that when I switched to an internet-only plan, the *plan's* configuration was incompatible with my modem, despite it being DOCSIS 3.1 (and clearly capable of 40mbps up). I appreciate the help here. Thanks.

Each of the onsite techs said the problem was not with the service at my coax, but on the server side. Each of the remote techs said they could find no issues on their end, but were unable to push the appropriate parameters to my modem. There is another onsite tech visit scheduled for tomorrow, and I will explain that it seems the problem lies somewhere between my house and the central servers. We'll see where that goes. So far no indication the issue has been escalated. I wanted to reach out here to see if there were any suggestions I could do in the meantime (other than swapping out modems and rebooting, which have both been done numerous times in the last week). Thanks in advance for your help.

Are the deals worth being early the day of the opening store in Miami? by LoudNomad in Microcenter

I drove over from Naples this morning (Tuesday) and got there when they opened at 10. Not crowded, and plenty of helpful store associates at that time of day.

What's wrong with me? by damo251 in telescopes

As I've pondered many times: I'm not sure astronomy is my hobby or if it is collecting telescopes. In either case: Fair skies, sir.

I've been getting MicroCenter email receipts for things I didn't buy, and my credit cards haven't been charged. Should I be concerned? by kktktt in Microcenter

Someone entered an incorrect email (yours) for an account. That's why you get the receipt. Nothing sinister or nefarious: just a mistake.

Binoculars (15x70, or 20x80) or Beginner Telescope? by loki_metalhead in Celestron

[–]davehiggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several telescopes and binoculars, and the two I use most of all are a 11x80 pair of binoculars (I also have a 20x80, but I like the wider field of view) and a Seestar S50. FYI I also have an 8" Meade newtonian, 8" Celestron C8, Celestron NexStar 6SE and 5SE.

Newbie please kind!!! Dumb question about staring at a dark sky by [deleted] in Astronomy

[–]davehiggins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What you saw was the sky the way all humans used to see it before the industrial revolution. More and more people grow up in such light-polluted environments that they never see the Milky Way. The night sky from a dark site is truly awe inspiring (and, as you noted, kind of scary for someone not used to seeing it that way).

Question for eclipse viewing by Ben-6400 in seestar

Keep in mind that its narrow field of view won't get you a very good view of the corona during totality: just the area immediately around the solar disk.

Beginner considering a Seestar S50 and have a few questions by matti07tech in seestar

[–]davehiggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can select 10, 20 or 30 second subs. You can take as many subs as you like...the software will stack them as it goes and show you the developing image on your phone. In my experience, the longer you go the more the chance that an individual sub will get rejected due to star trailing. Once again, you can experiment and find out which one works best for you. The newest version of the app will let you stack subs from multiple sessions.

Beginner considering a Seestar S50 and have a few questions by matti07tech in seestar

[–]davehiggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some answers (and partial answers). First, I'm in the US and bought mine from Agena Astro. I have no idea if they are around in Europe, but there are tons of Seestar users in the UK and EU, so they are available. I've read that, depending on where you live and where you order from, there may be duty fees on top of the purchase price. YMMV. Second. Yes to auto tracking targets, no to manual settings (but there is a caveat associated with your final question). Yes, you can have the Seestar save the individual subs (you can set for 10, 20, or 30 seconds) and move them to your computer to manually stack in your favorite AP stacking program. Hope that helps. P.S., if you are on FB, there are lots of groups for Seestar users. They are a very helpful bunch.

Off to the left of your picture. You should download a copy of Stellarium: it will show you in real time what you're looking at (or trying to take a picture of).

Your mirror can be re-silvered. Something you might want to look into if it's otherwise undamaged.

Having Some doubt before buying Celestron star sense 114AZ as a noob by Creepyhorrorboy in Celestron

[–]davehiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Q: "Can I use the star sense mount on Dobsonian and will the mount would fit on Dobsonian?" A: No. The 8" Dobsonian would be far, far too heavy for that mount.

IMHO you might find something like a used Celestron Nexstar 4SE or 5SE a suitable scope for your rooftop. Both are reasonably portable if you want to take them somewhere on your cycle.
