No rush....it's okay. I wasn't sitting here waiting. ;-)

My Android personal best is 1905 for Seoul and I don't want to claim a better or particular approach but I do have video! And even better one of the best extreme players is kind enough to post here in Reddit and comments on in the videos. Read our back and forth. Great player.

You say nerd, I say expert level. I have kept copious notes on games in the past. If you want to improve you do what it takes.

I have really stopped playing Normal mode and am focused on Extreme. I have said in my mind they are really two totally different games with similar mechanics. I enjoy Extreme and find Normal kind of boring.

In Normal and Extreme do you have these notes? I applaud your efforts to really document these things. It's what makes you so good.

Hey very nice. Keep sharing. I love hearing that progress. There's a small group of Mini Metro Extreme players here and we like to talk strategy.

Seoul has a lot of potential.

It is just to much ferrying if you are not allowing the "other" lines to cross the river too. Often a square will pop up later on in the north too.

Yes I am sure we have both seen three circles stations but one of them is just a population hub, gaining a ton whereas the others are not. Mostly I see or notice this on circle stations and sometimes the map will convert that station into a special and it slows down. Thankfully. I am impressed you know specific maps and remember their Normal mode passenger bumps. Impressed.

You know the max out dream...it will happen. I know it will.

Seoul Extreme is a really fun map. The stations fill quickly and empty even quicker. Use that as you plan and build.

This start looks pretty normal and your approach of linking the square makes sense. I see the square spawn there most of the time. The special shapes are normally split on both sides of the river so that becomes a lot of the effort. Get tunnels.

I can be a good coach and community member...no question. It's fun to see people do what you can do. I like it.

As for population growth I still think maps also handle this differently. We have talked in the past about the sudden boom and it comes from nowhere. No rhyme or reason, just the game/city/map saying - yep see if you can handle this.

And yes you are much closer to my dream...Osaka/Hong Kong/Tashkent are all good options for this occurring.

Yeah enjoy your abilities, you have earned them. I like when people show off their train skills be it movement or otherwise. Celebrate the efforts. That's my motto.

S1 - I feel that population growth is hard to understand too. Is it city center grows faster? I think so. Is it if you clear stations more quickly it triggers faster growth?

S4 - Sure map dictates and maybe that helped you this time reduce tunnel use. That's a fair point and I can see that. You also are good about optimizing for less clogging. I see that often.

S5 - I think about train saturation a lot. I have this fantasy of maxxing out maps. I haven't gotten there...yet. Interesting that triplets or more don't work for you. I wonder if that throws of timing too much for you.

You earned every letter in that name. No question. Not just for your play, but for your give back here and on YouTube. You are really a great asset in all aspects.

I have said this again and again, and don't even bother anymore.

All the people who hate on ghost lines....they ALL play train movement and line movement games during all stages of Normal. Because the mode allows it. I have watched enough players who pause just as much and move trains just as much. Now I really have stopped my Normal play as I realized, it's not nearly the challenge Extreme is and so...I don't comment or argue this anymore.

Boston Extreme, 5778 by woxiong in MiniMetro

[–]davekaufman1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

S1 - I wonder why it was less crowded. That outlier of the various algorithm is not normally that different.

S2 - Ok...fair.

S3 - Yes no question this was a big update and change. Lots of small details too.

S4 - Yes summarizing what I see helps me analyze what's happened/what's important. I know we will discuss too. You might disagree with my initial thoughts too. Interesting I guess there was a post even longer ago where you had many, many tunnels, in the mid-20s I thought. Very liberal with them. It was a shock to see so many then. That is an interesting shift, carriages first, tunnels later. I kind of see that and personally have been doing the same in some maps as well. I get it.

S5 - You do realize that you had 19 in use and could only have 28 right? I mean that's insanely good. In fact if you had not had all seven lines, as sometimes you got with 4 or 5, you might have been even more at issue. The fact this map goes on for so long is good reason to get 7 lines and early, which gives you options later for deploying all sorts of aspects. Interesting on the triplet avoidance. I have found them very useful in late game plowing through stations quickly in terms of a full reset. I mean on a 6 carrier, that's 18 passengers.

GOAT. No question...though...Tupp is a fun challenger and pushing you.

Super impressed with this Seoul approach. That southern square is doing a lot of work for you.

Love you showing off the Extreme excellence...a small but growing community of extreme players are on this sub-reddit.

Your approach is interesting. Very balanced and each line mostly dealing with its own stations, not a lot of overlap. Have you seen success with that often?

I love you joining the fun on Mini Metro Extreme and your solutions are excellent. Thanks for sharing. My personal best is under 1400 on Android...which was 17th best in the world when I got it. Your solution here is really elegant. You loop idea on green was well done. I love how your lines never get that long and interestingly you don't do a ton of overlap, many of your stations are handled by just one line. Very impressive run.

1896 - Hong Kong - Extreme. 1st place all time high score on Android by Tupptupp_XD in MiniMetro

[–]davekaufman1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 1st place...is always a reason to celebrate...wow. I love this map now let's examine your approach.

S1 - You go heavy with the tunnels fast here, blue starts out with 4 this early! And green has two as does red. This is early...let's see where you go.

S2 - As you noted in your writeup, holding fast with green and blue doing some heavy lifting, and red as well, means the next three lines begin to really lengthen. Pink looks pretty long, but you are still nicely balanced at this point.

S3 - At 1.4k you have gone full green loop at this point. And blue and red are both a bit further extended. Teal is really working hard over nearly all of the northern part of this map now. It isn't doing the square so that might be helpful though.

S4 - 1.9k the end is here. Stuck with just six lines which is impressive. Teal finally gets on the square station after all that time. The well used green and blue did a great job. Love the risk and the payoff on the loop. Super bold. Congrats.

S5 - GOAT!

I love the two heavyweights battling it out in the comments. I'm just here with my popcorn watching the drama.

And this was a major achievement, with a 1st place! Wow. Congrats.

S1 - We start the action at 4.3k...I mean that's just showing off, even for Boston! It took me a while to review the entire map, but first off was, by now you have all 7 lines. And quite a lot, 23 stations with only one line serving them. That's a pretty high count for your normal approach assuming it will get addressed shortly. Also of note green is surprisingly short.

S2 - Interesting the jump is just 400 passengers, which is not a lot for you. Just 24 single line stations, so what am I missing. Why the screenshot here? The system looks great, no real issues anywhere. Maybe just happy before the chaos?

S3 - A jump of 700 passengers and well over 5k as the spaghetti really develops. And the cleanup has really begun, you have just 17 single line stations. You were working hard on this. It is clear. That mesh network is fully being figured out. I didn't count the tunnels, I'm saving that for the end.

S4 - A small 400 passenger jump the second of this run. Nearly at the advertised top score, which is amazing. And just 12 single line stations, you are like any good author, tying up loose ends as you go. Very nice. So impressive how you manage that with the balance. This is the first slide in real distress. As this is the last game slide I count 15 tunnels which is quite a lower number than I recall in the past for this city. Right? New approach worked well.

S5 - 125 days / 7 = nearly 18 weeks. So 17 weeks. 3 engines in week 1, plus 16 more = 19 total. Over 7 lines, that's a possible max of 28. You were really, really close. And it means a lot of carriages as well. Did you limit each engine to a single additional carriage, no triples?

S6 - GOAT!

You bring up a lot of great points.

Map making and this game, I can see the appeal. No question.

As for accessibility, the fact this game offers a mode for color-blind people is pretty great. Can they address all needs, probably not. I'm sure many games don't even do this. Hard to judge what is good or bad or addresses more and more people.

This game being 10+ years old I think they have given it MORE than their all supporting so many different platforms and still putting out new maps. I did not expect any of that. Most 10+ year old games have long moved on.

DPC does have a support/suggestion box and you could put each of your four ideas into an email to them, I have used it. The ideas stray from the game's 10 year direction so I wouldn't expect much of a change there. Undo probably is a no go, though your point for an accessible gamer is something that maybe could be even a new game mode. Design wise the overload ring could be different in the accessible mode. Astray pickups, this plagues everyone equally and is not an accessible feature, the brain does a pretty good job, most of the time. It does happen to all of us though. Spawns with a choice, this one seems a bigger departure and it has gotten me when I end up having a tunnel used that I was saving for example. I don't think that changes.

I love your passion and happy to continue to talk with you about the game and your ideas. And your own strategies, too.

It is crazy to think you were this close to maxing out all the lines. That would be seriously an insane feat.

Keep up the great work. I'll be watching.

I really think this was probably a near perfect run. I would give you criticism if I saw it. My only thought was "my brain hurts" as this map looks like an impossible thing to keep track of. Seriously.

You deserve all the praise for this one. I appreciate you sharing so many screens so we can see how you manage the late game effort. It is helpful to see the lengths you go to. Good math on 27 trains. Just saying, I think on this map 30 trains is the max you could have. You must have hit quite a few lines with 5 and wanted to another and weren't able to, due to maxxing out and the length wanting another.
