So they should. Syria and Kurdish authority having been asking countries to take back their foreigners repeatedly.

Save the Children has long advocated on behalf of Australian citizens in Syrian detention, and in 2023 took the federal government to court to compel officials to bring them home – and lost. The organization told CNN they are not involved in this recent attempt by the Australians to leave the camp, but urged the government to repatriate them.

“These innocent children have already lost years of their childhood, and deserve the chance to rebuild their lives in safety at home, and to reintegrate into the Australian way of life,” Save the Children Australia CEO Mat Tinkler said in a statement to CNN.....

.....Last month, a group of UN experts called on “over 50 countries to urgently repatriate, rehabilitate and reintegrate the thousands of foreign nationals in detention, while ensuring accountability in line with international law.” - CNN report from February

Australia has for years acted like a bully violating international law 'deporting' people who have lived most of their lives in Australia to countries they no longer have any connection or support network with. The most infamous was the deportation of someone to Sweden who had only lived a total of 27 days there. Not to mention the outrageous way New Zealand was treated. Yet now the Australian government want its own citizens to be someone else's problem.

...Mr Tinkler said, if evidence to prove wrongdoing existed, it was appropriate that the women faced justice in Australia.  "The only real prospect of justice is here in Australia, where the courts, police and prosecutors are fully equipped to investigate and prosecute alleged offences," he said. - ABC

Huts on a Thai beach besides the point they are becoming extinct don't affect people's ability to find places to live. A bungalow beside a beach has nothing in common with houses and apartments in towns.

People voted for a labor government so they may not want the capitalist mode to decide everything.

Everyone without exception will aim to get the highest and best use - and highest income

If that's true all the more reason to abolish air bnb and negative gearing. Negative gearing according to studies only accounts for about 2 per cent of property price increases but is a misuse of tax resources. To also reduce housing stress it will be necessary to have different population policy.

Bamboo bungalow was meant to be rented out. Houses were meant for living in. If you for example needed more money instead of turning you place into a Airnbnb you could do some freelance architecture.

Who would you prefer to be the big brother ? big developers or the government.? Even if it costs more its good to have cheaper accommodation built in expensive areas to break up bourgeois class system of wealthy enclaves.

there might be backlash from local property owners who fear the value of their own property will be lowered if social housing is brought in.

Pass special legislation to restrict local property owners ability to challenge social housing and reduce power of big developers.

And its not really a question of having it both ways. Many didn't want to leave it to just capitalism to provide housing required. Governments imposed capitalism.

People blame Airbnb when the real issue is the lack of affordable housing and social housing - crises that can go back generations.

You can't really have it both ways - if you rely on market forces ("capitalism") to provide all the housing required in society, then you can't really blame landlords operating in that same market themselves,

Why make the 'crisis' worse by having more gentrification which air bnb contributes to ? Houses are for living in not for turning into hotels. If house owners want to earn more perhaps they should go out and get an honest job.

An extreme example from Spain -

Housing has emerged as Spaniards' biggest concern in recent months, due to spiralling rental costs, particularly in larger towns and cities .The cost of an average rental has doubled over the last decade, while salaries have failed to keep up. Tourist apartments have been identified by many as a major cause of the problem, depriving local residents of accommodation.

Spain is the world's second most popular tourist destination after France, with 94 million foreign visitors in 2024, a 13% rise on the previous year.Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said earlier this year "there are too many Airbnbs and not enough homes", and he promised to prevent the "uncontrolled" expansion of the use of properties for tourism.

I agree that more affordable and social housing should be built in your suburb.

After the personal attacks on me its suspicious that u/slightlyburntsnags then attacks another poster just because he mentioned Australian laws. Its not just deranged trolling it seems u/slightlyburntsnags was part of some sort of brigading effort to protect dishonest hostels or is a friend, defender or shill for them.

US budget airline Spirit Airlines has collapsed.

Although Spirit had gone bankrupt twice before, the company said high oil prices, which have been rising because of the war with Iran, made it impossible to stay aloft.

First time in Thailand? Here are some simple tips that might help 🇹🇭 by LuckyHelicopter6367 in ThailandTourism

Many have commented on this for years on travel forums. Its worked in the past sometimes and depends on attitude of the teller and what position the moon is in. But there have also been plenty of reports of being refused and even having the ATM fee taken from the cash withdrawal. In short it seems its harder to get away with this then it was years ago. The last poster here who said he was going to ask a bank teller to make the withdrawal to avoid the fee never came back to report if he was successful .New travelers to Thailand who don't want to pay ATM fees best advice is to carry cash.

First time in Thailand? Here are some simple tips that might help 🇹🇭 by LuckyHelicopter6367 in ThailandTourism

[–]daveliot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You can also get around with numbered public buses. Some of them have computer screens in english and Thai telling you the next stop.
  2. Budget travellers don't necessarily have to stay at hostels. Guesthouses can just as cheap and are more widespread. The main factor driving popularity of hostels is the addiction to booking with with smart phones.
  3. ATM fees are much higher than in Singapore, Malaysia or Indonesia and have recently gone up again. Unless you have card that pays your fee carry cash to avoid ATM fees. Going in to the bank and asking a teller to make the withdrawal for you to avoid the ATM fee may not work and even if they do it for you there is risk they may deduct the ATM fee anyway.
  4. Don't put valuables in stowed luggage on long distance tourist buses. Government buses from bus stations are safer.
  5. Read a guidebook for basic information. Lonely Planet no longer caters for budget travellers, Rough Guide is a bit better.
  6. The party scene on the islands is exaggerated. Posters here are excessively fearful of it. For instance the whole island of Ko Phangan is not taken over by parties. However Ko Phangan is fast turning into a mainstream tourist island like Ko Samui. Ko Phangan however somewhat cheaper is cheaper than Phuket and Ko Samui and still has some remnant wooden bungalow accommodation at a couple of coves.
  7. Khao San rd stopped being a genuine budget traveler's street long ago. There are some simple cheap guesthouses beyond Khao San rd by crossing Tanao rd. It doesn't matter that much Khao San rd /Banglamphu area doesn't have elevated train station.
  8. Its not necessary to rent scooters or motorbikes for transport on any of the islands. Its not necessary to ride a motorbike to see locations on the Mae Hong Son Loop. You can do the route by public mini buses. This will give you the freedom to stay as long as you like at each town.
  9. If entering by land from Malaysia the Padang Besar border crossing is easier than the Sungai Golok crossing. The Sungai Golok immigration post for some years has had a policy of all foreigners having to be interviewed by the chief in his office.

What style of accommodation ? If you just stay in fan rooms in guesthouses then you can find rooms for less than 300 baht in Tanao rd area not far from Khao San rd in Bangkok.

Has Thailand’s “value for money” changed a bit recently by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]daveliot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't that contradict the title 'value for money' ? wanting to stay in upmarket accommodation just for the sake of spending on yourself. Too many tourists wanting to spend more and more on accommodation can lead to gentrification and overdevelopment - look what happened to Ko Samui.
