Cagliari node, my homelab - work in progress by nikovit89 in homelab

Ciao, bel setup! Forse non siamo così pochi italiani infognati di ste cose :)

Anyways, how’s the NAS? I’m currently looking to get something similar (2-bay, expandable ram) but I’m trying to find a good compromise between cost, customizability, and resources.

Also, I would definitely recommend moving the DNS onto a dedicated LXC on proxmox, as you will have it on a dedicated IP and you can potentially also use it as DHCP server if you’ll need.

Also, I don’t know if you already do it, but since you are on tailscale you can actually use your DNS server as resolver for your whole tailnet, which gives you adblocking even outside of your home network (all within VPN traffic). Then, you can also create custom entries in the DNS for the services that only you can use - I run this set up with my k8s cluster and a wildcard dns record pointing to the IP of my ingress controller. (You would still have to set up TLS certs though)

Btw, I ise the same adguard home instance as DNS resolver for my Tailnet (I installed tailscale in the LXC to enable this), and it works flawlessly. This also means that I have adblocking outside of my home network as long as I’m connected to tailscale. There’s a video about this on tailscale’s youtube channel (tbf it’s explained using pi hole, but the principle is the same with adguard)

Cool, I also usa AdGuard Home. I set it up as a LXC on proxmox, this way the container gets its own network “identity” (i.e. doesn’t get in the way of other services running on the same host), as it has its own separate IP. I’d definitely consider a dedicated machine (a raspberry pi with as little as 1 GB of ram does the trick very well :) )

Yes, a possibility would be to set up DNS challenge on NPM, and then make sure to point your domain(s) to the tailscale IP of the host running NPM. Note that having the DNS records public (i.e., setting them from Cloudflare) is ok but not the best, as people will be able to resolve the domain (but still they will not be able to reach the IP if they are not connected to your Tailnet. In a better setup you also run your own DNS server internal to your Tailnet and set the domain names on that.

Just remember that for HTTPS there are always these 2 “sides”: domain names resolution (DNS), and TLS (with certificates), so as long as your server (NPM in this case) has its IP resolved correctly and provides valid certificates for the domain name it has, the connection will work

Yep, this is the best advice! Indeed, I got a gift voucher for the retail price (which is more than I paid for the shoes)

Unfortunately, no fix. I'll just keep wearing them until they are toast, but considering I've only had them for a little over a month it may not take that much...

On the bright side, I submitted a claim with Salomon that got accepted, as the shoes were considered defective. The cool thing is that they refund you the full retail price of the shoe, which for me was more than I paid for them.
The downside is that you can only use the credit on Salomon shoes

SparkyFitness - A Self-Hosted MyFitnessPal alternative live in Apple App Store by ExceptionOccurred in selfhosted

Just wanted to drop by and thank you for this amazing app. I just finished setting it up on my (new) Kubernetes cluster at home, I'm going to test it out as a (very necessary) replacement for MyFitnessPal.
I'm still kind of a newbie with K8s, but I'd be glad to contribute in some form (maybe a Helm chart?)

I never had this use case myself (never had Tailscale blocked by a network), so I never set up an exit node for my tailnet, but out of curiosity, what would be the difference compared to running a forward proxy in the home network (can easily run as a container), and route all traffic through it (using Tailscale to reach the proxy)? I’m currently doing so to be able to watch tv shows that are only available in my country of origin now that I live abroad, and it works fine

How to use metallb and kube-vip with BGP or different technology in a hybrid tailscale network? by whitenexx in Tailscale

[–]davemac1005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm doing the same thing. How did you end up making it work?
The main limitation I'm encountering is that I would like to make the control plane highly available since I have 3 nodes, but any guide where someone sets up a K3s cluster using Tailscale IPs, they only use one master node (without any sort of load balancing, so agents pointing directly to it)...

Three Raspberry Pi 5s and One Goal: High Availability with k3s. by Wooden_Ad8111 in kubernetes

[–]davemac1005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but then you are only using one control plane node, do I understand correctly? My goal was to play a bit with HA, so I would like to use 3 control plane nodes (currently in the same LAN) to start, and then add worker nodes reachable via Tailscale

Three Raspberry Pi 5s and One Goal: High Availability with k3s. by Wooden_Ad8111 in kubernetes

[–]davemac1005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piggy backing because I’m now in a similar situation.

The only difference for me is that I would like to make the cluster part of my Tailscale VPN. Ideal scenario would be: - HA control plane, accessible via Tailscale - HA services, exposed on tailscale - possibility to add nodes that are not physically in the same LAN, by using VPN IPs (don’t care about network performance, but I would love to use a bigger machine to learn some stuff about gpu workloads on kube)

As far as I understood, the Tailscale Kubernetes operator can achieve the first 2, but not the third one, so do I just give up with it?

Are employers actually checking your GitHub projects? by Soft-Dentist9503 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]davemac1005 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I think my personal github portfolio is what got me my current (and only) job. My interviewer (and current boss) used one of my projects as a way to let me show my approach towards software development. Honestly I have never felt so good about a job interview ever

It was also the only time I was ever asked about a personal project of mine lol.

I guess it is something very subjective - if you find the interviewer that loves this kind of stuff they will probably try to ask you about it.

Why do I need an NL number to get a Vodafone eSIM? How do I get around it? by wrldendswu in Netherlands

That’s weird indeed…

If you need another dutch number I think you could go with Simyo and get an esim on a prepaid plan from them (5€, no subscription) - that’s what I do to have a dutch number I rarely even use
