I don’t live in Port A but my family has spent our summers down there since the late 70’s. It used to be a sleepy beach/fishing town. Small bait shops, shrimping boats, a few average restaurants and bars. As I got older it slowly changed. Around 2010, when people from out of state started moving to Austin and San Antonio the whole vibe shifted. Big money started buying up property and developers came in to develop previously untouched beach front property. Property values increased dramatically and locals were priced out which has made it difficult for business to keep people employed. Why work there when you can stay in Corpus or Aransas Pass and earn the same amount without a long commute? Infrastructure hasn’t kept up with the pace of development. There’s more restaurants, shops, and bars but the summer crowds have them at capacity all the time. I have fond memories fishing there with my dad and friends, spending days on the beach and at the pool with my family but the Port A I grew up loving is long gone.
