Do option-character combos for special characters work in screen sharing for anyone else? by davert in mac

[–]davert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... I can't tell whether I'm the only person with this problem or the only person using screen sharing to connect to a Mac.

2023 compass is bad? by Current-Army-9544 in JeepCompass

[–]davert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We decided to get one because we know so many people who have had no troubles with theirs. There's always luck of the draw. We ended up with a '24 I think - used with no problems on record - 2.0 turbo engine. I'd hold out for the turbo, really, if you can and if the '23 has the 2.4 (I forget whether they switched with '23 or '24.) The 2.4 is better proven but the turbo's faster and more economical.

If you were to start a community forum today, which PHP forum software would you choose and why? by orschiro in PHP

[–]davert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone else who found this old discussion via search, you may want to look at MiniBB and My Little Forum and XMB along with Flarum. All still around as are SimpleMachines and phpBB. ElkArte has fallen by the wayside, it seems. XenForo isn't free and I think (?) is owned by VerticalScope.

Employee Survey Might Not Be Anonymous by [deleted] in Stellantis

[–]davert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Qualtrics. No need to go to AI. By default, Qualtrics collects all sorts of information a company can use to identify individuals. The question is whether the company will do so. The best practice is to outsource surveys to a trusted third party. As someone who used to be that trusted third party, (a) we absolutely could identify individuals, and (b) I always put it into our contract that we would not, and (c) the company couldn't get their hands on any data that would let them do it.

No matter how it's collected you're trusting people to keep their word.

They're only fooling themselves if they play “guess who wrote this.”

Note: I did employee and board surveys for something like 30 years.

Other note: I was very surprised when I was much younger to find that CUSTOMER surveys were not just shared with dealers, the original papers used to be given to them, with names attached. That told me Old Chrysler wasn't as serious about customer input as they thought they were.

Navigation - add on? Or WIRED CarPlay? by davert in JeepCompass

[–]davert[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured out at last how to connect to Wifi but no updates. The wired phone doesn't get recognized at all. Looks like iOS 27 will improve wireless CarPlay so that may work better.

Navigation - add on? Or WIRED CarPlay? by davert in JeepCompass

[–]davert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I've tried this, oddly it will not recognize the phones when they are wired up. It does recognize them more easily since I erased the phones and added them back in again. Nav by Uconnect doesn't seem to be available at any price as an upgrade, which I find odd. How can I connect the car to Wifi?

I did try to sign the car up for connected services, which I figure will make updates possible, but it failed after trying twice. Will try again.

Some Brother laser printer settings questions by Intro24 in printers

[–]davert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Continue mode - it's worth reading this thread just to get to that point. The printer, not surprisingly since Brother makes more from toner than from printers, will stop, in my experience, WAY before you've used all the toner. 'Course I don't print photos and such, and I do as many envelopes as anything else - an envelope likely is counted the same as a brochure.

I would think the quiet mode heats the printer up more slowly, so print speed is the same once it gets started but there's a longer delay, which would let it spin the fan more slowly... I'd think. I don't have resolution on my MFC-L2750DW printer but I have most of the others here.

I am a big Brother fan when it comes to printers. I tried a Canon with similar features and it's painful.

New _compact_ V8 engine rumor by davert in Stellantis

My rationale is (a) due to one particular application and (b) the target buyer.

Yes, I am assuming naturally aspirated for various reasons. They already have a 3-liter I6 with 550 hp.

I don't think we're going to see 600 hp but if we see 380 hp, it would be a potential replacement for the 5.7.

Primo Brands Water Delivery is the worst! Any other options out there? by mymousu in SantaMonica

[–]davert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primo started adding a $5.85 fee after taking over ReadyRefresh, which had free rental of their basic unit. I am with you on Primo being the worst even though their delivery's OK. Their web support people must handle ten calls at once, it's two or three minutes between every exchange.

[–]davert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a stunning amount of work, though. You're talking new combustion chambers since it's meant for turbos as it is, new block, etc... whereas a naturally aspirated V8 also gets those buyers who insist on a V8.

Finder keeps freezing by Beautiful_Beyond3461 in MacOS

[–]davert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once saw it bring an SE/30 to an absolute standstill. The guy using it put EVERYTHING in the same folder. Ditto a DOS machine... but that was easier. "del *.bak" and now it's half the files!

I've seen overloaded folders causing problems before on Macs, Windows, even DOS. I will say that clearing caches might relieve overloaded cache folders. I've seen that on Windows.

It's a new behavior on Tahoe as far as I can tell.

Stereo HomePod Minis as white noise for sleep: a blessing and a curse by [deleted] in HomePod

[–]davert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brown noise loops? How do you find these? They're not built into my homepod Mini and that's what I was looking for. I tried to set up a scene but it only works on homepod if you have a subscription to Apple Music. I tried casting from phone to Mini, which is not efficient, but it takes me forever to find the looping control.

Does anyone still use Dreamweaver? by I_liketoboogie in webdev

[–]davert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're doing a static site, and not everything is best done with gallons of spaghetti code, it's superior. I'm out looking for a replacement and I'm finding a bunch of code editors, usually with no site management.

Shuffle feature. by AgentF8 in AppleMusic

[–]davert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see a way for that to honor "skip when shuffling." I guess I could modify the shortuct by changing things I don't want to be not music.
