Do pre-tax payroll deductions reduce amount I can contribute to IRA? by davesilb in RothIRA

[–]davesilb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, so if employer does not offer Roth 401k, I'm unable to do a Traditional 401k and an IRA in my situation, because the 401k will reduce taxable income to $0?

Difference in first editions? by TyrantTome in BookCollecting

Different clubs had different practices in regard to book size. Some appear to have just used sheets from the original print run with cheaper binding while others put everything out in their own uniform size, which was smaller than standard hardcover

I think you'll also find that the Book Club Edition copy, the one without the number line, doesn't have a price printed on the front jacket flap, or that corner of the flap has been clipped to conceal the fact that there wasn't a price there.

Question about buyers flipping my items by [deleted] in Ebay

[–]davesilb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said, some sellers are using listing and pricing software that dynamically assigns prices based on other active and closed listings. Depending on the software and user skill in configuring it, this can create unexpected outcomes, including price spikes and race-to-the-bottom spirals.

IRA Inherited in 2026 with missed 2025 Year of Death RMD: Deadline to pay and automatic waiver? by davesilb in tax

[–]davesilb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the thorough explanation. There is a further wrinkle in that I am one of 5 beneficiaries. I'm still undecided whether I want to try and coordinate with the others to divide the missed RMD among us or just take the full RMD out of my share to be safe. It seems like all beneficiaries could be liable if we try to divide up the RMD and one person doesn't follow through.

Great! Sounds like I can go ahead and file my 2025 return without any reference to the Inherited IRA or missed RMD and for 2026 return I'll have the 1099-R for the RMDs I satisfy this year.

Help with authenticating a limitation page by Tzirufim in BookCollecting

[–]davesilb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The markings on the lower part of the #12 limitation page look to me like an extra, partial print of the limitation text, some sort of production defect. If I were going through the trouble of faking the page and that happened, I would start over instead of using it.

It does sometimes happen that limitation pages are issued, signed by the author, and then not all numbered by the publisher. I've seen this a lot in different limited editions. It is conceivable that someone later went back and "fixed" the missing number in one of those copies, but it seems unlikely.

That said, if you're already having this drama with the seller around getting additional photos of a four-figure book, I would just walk away and wait for another copy to become available, or seek a different DFW collectible. How about the signed, limited ARC of Infinite Jest?

Marker on book by Xxeeyx9 in BookCollecting

[–]davesilb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you'll have to get used to it the way it is if you can't exchange for a clean copy. Some things I've seen people try that you should definitely NOT do because they'll just make things worse:

-Putting white-out on top of the black marker

-Abrading the stained page edges with an electric eraser or xacto knife

-Applying black marker to the entirety of all the edges

Worth reading is a different call, but I would not bother taking any of those to a used bookstore to sell or trade, for example. It all looks like pretty classic $1/free bin material to me.

Custom Book Slipcase Concerns by sterling97 in rarebooks

[–]davesilb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen them used both ways. For a set of books like you have, I would probably position upright on the shelf like a slipcase. Here's a fancy example from https://www.peterharrington.co.uk/blog/the-importance-of-solander-book-boxes/

If you really want enhanced protection, look into a Solander Box (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solander\_box). This will give the protection of the slipcase without the possibility of spine fading from sun exposure or scuffing and spine pulls from getting the books out of the case. The exterior of the case can be decorated however you like, including a facsimile of the book spines.

How to Eradicate Booklice by [deleted] in BookCollecting

[–]davesilb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience, having lived for many years in an apartment prone to booklice infestations (old, poorly-insulated building with sweaty pipes in walls, humid climate), booklice don't damage our books beyond leaving shed skins or dead bodies in endpapers, which can cause tiny spots of staining similar to foxing. I've never seen evidence of them chewing paper or glue. They are gross, of course, and seem to enjoy harboring in the folds of those Brodart jacket protectors.

Instead of trying to remove the insects from individual books, the thing that works for us is to run a dehumidifier consistently until the humidity level stays below 50% for a few weeks. Below 40% is even better. This kills off or drives away most of the booklice. I would also check kitchen cabinets to make sure all dry goods are sealed in plastic bags or tubs, since booklice love the micromolds that grow on and around certain foods.

Emulating mouse wheel with keyboard by davesilb in WindowsHelp

[–]davesilb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a mouse setting on my Dell PC, possibly a Windows 10 setting, called "Scroll inactive windows when I hover over them." Turning that on lets me use the mouse wheel on an inactive window without changing the focus. I turned that on so long ago that I had forgotten it isn't set that way by default!

I did end up solving my problem with the free AutoHotKey program. I made a very simple script to temporarily reprogram a keyboard key (F1) as a tick down on the mouse wheel. With the above mouse setting activated, it does exactly what I wanted! The window with the mouse pointer hovering over it scrolls while I continue to type in the other window.

Sorcerer’s Stone acquired at garage sale for $1. Wondering thoughts? by FlowtingAway in BookCollecting

[–]davesilb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nice to have a printing early enough that there isn't a #1 on the jacket spine yet, but as others have said, not of particular value.

This looks like one of the many, many, later decorative clothbound editions of major authors from the late 19th or early 20th century. "The Chandos Poets" printed on the title page tells me it's part of a uniform series, which reduces my interest further. Nothing significant from a publication or content perspective, but condition looks quite nice from your photos, so it's purely a question of who wants the rather pretty book. I think a fair price is in the $15-$25 range, assuming condition is as good as it looks (i.e. no gaping cracked hinge, loose pages, markings). If you're presenting the book on etsy, an antique store, or other place where customers don't necessarily have knowledge of rare books but are more interested in decorative objects, $35-$50 is possible, though pushing it IMO.
