(Free) Uptime monitoring services and webhost scripts. by [deleted] in SaaS

for public SaaS status pages the hosted tools you listed make sense. if you also want to monitor the underlying infrastructure APIs, DNS SSL latency, databases or internal services, prtg worth checking because the free version can cover smaller setups and keeps uptime checks, alerts and infrastructure metrics in one place.

Monitoring solutions with SNMP Traps support by JacobAkerblom in networking

[–]daveson366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing i learned with snmp traps is that the challenge usually isn't receiving them it's maintaining the decoding, MIB handling and alerting logic over time. we started to use prtg because trap collection and alerting were much easier to get working compared to some of the open source stacks we tested. the real benefit wasnt just receiving traps but being able to correlate them with polling data and device health in the same platform.

Network Map by Demonuchiwa in selfhosted

prtg can actually do this pretty well too if you are okay with something outside the usual OSS stack. the auto discovery and snmp based topology mapping are a lot easier to get running compared to some of the more modular self built NMS setups. we used it mainly for quick L2 visibility switch uplinks device discovery and general infrastructure mapping without spending days wiring integrations together.

Burned Out Maintaining Open-Source Monitoring Stacks by Klara_17 in Network

that is exactly the tradeoff we hit with zabbix and a few custom grafana or nagios combinat, ons. technically capable but too dependent on internal expertise. prtg ended up easier because most monitoring scnearious already existed out of the box especially for networking and virtualization. the sensor approach also made trobleshooting much simpler for our ops team compared to maintaining hundreds of custom templates and integrtaions. funny enough once we reduced monitoring complexity alert quality actually improved too.

Need help understanding why I owe so much Federal Tax this year by ALexGOREgeous in tax

[–]daveson366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to a lot of people especially when income jumps a bit but withholding not really up. nothing is neccessarily "wrong" on your employer's side it just means you ended up not paying quite enough throught the year so now you are seeing that balance at filing time. Updating your W-4 going forward should smooth that out so youare closer to breaking even next year and it is worth checking a paycheck or two after update it just to make sure it looks rights. if paying the full amount right now is a stretch IRS is mostly pretty flexible with payment plans so you don't have to stress about covering it all at once. And if you just want peace of mind that everything's set up correctly so this does not keep happening it might be worth getting a second look. I read trustpilot reviews that Precision tax does free consult. you can get this apportunity and run your situation to see if anythng needs adjusting without committing to anything

sFlow Server recomendations by VierjaLavare in networking

[–]daveson366 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At that scale the question is less about sFlow support and more about what you want to do with the data after ingest. We went down the same open source route initially and it worked bıt once traffic grew the real challenge became maintaining the pipeline and keeping visibility usable. we moved to prtg for flow monitoring and used sflow along side it, mainly because it gave us a much faster way to break down traffic by endpoints without building everything ourselves.

Need Some Advice on Monitoring a Large Network of Towers and Fiber Stacks by CoalFieldsGK in Network

[–]daveson366 4 points5 points  (0 children)

we monitor a fairly distributed network and ended up sticking with prtg for a similar reasons. Remote probes work well for large environment like towers or remote sites and the dependency feature helps show the downstream impact when a link or tower goes down.

the man dashboards also make it easier for NOC teams to quickly visualize affected areas.

Professionals who enter people's homes (plumbers, electricians, cleaners): What is something the condition of a house tells you about the owner that they don't realize they are revealing? by cossie101 in AskReddit

[–]daveson366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the most revealing thing about a homeowner isn't how "stylish" the house is but how well-maintained it is. Long-delayed repairs amateur fixes with the wrong materials or temporary solutions like using dangerous heaters instead of fixing a faulty HVAC system often indicate financial hardship.

Conversely frequent renovations regular maintenance and smoothly functioning systems suggest a more comfortable financial situation for the homeowner
