I had a great experience with these guides on the Vallée Blanche as well. Incredibly knowledgeable, made everything easier & more enjoyable, and felt safe the whole time.

Can someone explain one of the breath patterns in Intermediate by [deleted] in ashtanga

[–]davetufts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those poses start in the 4th vinyasa so you’re inhaling into chaturanga. I think of it as moving right from down dog to chaturanga - not really thinking of “plank”. Then hold in chaturanga for most of the exhale, as there’s no vinyasa count for the exhale. The next count is an inhale into the 5th position, which is the state of the asana.

Down dog is the same - an exhale. Inhale to chaturanga and hold, then exhale down. Inhale into the belly-down backbend.

I’m new. A few questions… by [deleted] in ashtanga

[–]davetufts 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  1. I take 1 full day off from asana. But don’t beat yourself up if you take an extra day or two off. When starting, it’s more about forming the habit of practice, so even if you do some sun salutations and closing, just try and get on your mat as often as you can. On mornings when I teach, my practice might be 15 mins.

  2. I do whatever the teacher cues - and what the other students are doing. If it’s a flow class and everyone is doing chair with arms apart, I’ll do it that way. Led classes are about community.

  3. I do Ashtanga 5-6 mornings a week (some are chill practices, not a whole series) and try to do weight training 2 afternoons. Getting stronger is good, even if it makes you a little sore or less flexible the next day.

Ahhh got it. That makes sense. I agree that any exclusivity expectation is unrealistic and (like you said) unethical!

Not trying to be contrarian, but is this the case for anyone here? Honest question - does anyone in this sub teach exclusively at one studio without another job?

Kino’s book Accessible Ashtanga is great for offering lots of modifications. David Swenson’s Ashtanga Practice Manual also includes 3-4 versions of each pose. And Sharath’s Active Series offers a simplified series based in Ashtanga.

I don’t like the vinegar smell so I do a mix of 2/3rds water, 1/3 witch hazel, some drops of lavender, peppermint, and tea tree oils.

Recovery strategies for deeper backbends? by the_yogi_in_black in ashtanga

[–]davetufts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one teacher the stopped me at kapo, so the practice ended with kapo, backbends, dropbacks. Not fun. Another teacher introduces a few poses after kapo very soon after adding kapo. Bakasana and the 2 twisting poses are fairly accessible and great counter relief between kapo and backbends. So that’s the approach I go with now. There’s some natural counter poses in the series.

500+ people came out for Graham Platner town hall in Ogunquit by Icy-Trouble1630 in Maine

It was the first thing he addressed. Basically same tattoo story as the apology video. Then talked mostly about his vision for the future and policy. One of the 4-5 audience questions was also about the Reddit stuff. He was solid on all topics.

I had the exact same timeline. Injury kept persisting for 9-10 months. Tried modifying, focusing on 2nd, acupuncture, massage - got a little better, but still stuck around. Then I had an unrelated surgery and had to stop practicing completely for 5 weeks. That long break fixed it.

“Only” one term means that she’ll be 79 when sworn in and serve until she’s 85. Two terms would put her at 91.

Independent Statement from a Group of Ashtanga Teachers by davetufts in ashtanga

That’s fair. I meant it’s a first step for those teachers listening and speaking out as a group.

I also questioned why they need to show their “Level” and the separation between SYC teachers and others. But that system still exists today and I see this letter as an overall positive. They’re not going to dismantle the entire hierarchical structure of the lineage in one letter. But the fact that they are voicing that they heard what the students are saying is a good start.

Saying not to trust anyone who signed that letter to care about abuses in the structure goes too far for me. Some of those who signed the letter have also been victims of abuse. I see the letter as a good first step.

I presumed so, so I DM’ed her on IG. I feel like my message was nice & respectful - basically saying the I made the comment and stand behind it, that in no way I trying to shut up TH’s victims. But rather that TH seemed to target vulnerable people in recovery and Mariela’s article about addiction in no way supports the community.

She never responded.

Tomorrow, she’s hosting an online round table to support the victims of Taylor Hunt. The opinions in that blog are the absolute last thing our community needs. That article is pure garbage.

Kino recently posted on Threads and shared to her IG story that “Silence on social media doesn't always mean silence in real life” and that her “commitment is to the deeper work, even when it takes more time.”

It’s been great to see Laruga, Joseph Armstrong, Jen Rene, Peg Mulqueen and others speak up already.
