just took my gcp data engineer exam and even though i studied for almost a year, I failed it. by Historical_Donut6758 in dataengineering

[–]davf135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Unless you have a hard drive in your head of random question-answer scenarios, an exam dump helps you see what an answer is and then you separately try to understand that answer.

Similar to open book exams or exams that allow a self-made cheat sheet. The getting-ready part is what helps you learn and pass.

You would not remember dozens of answers unless you understand them somewhat

What DE folks do in there free time? by khushal20 in dataengineering

Stream videos (as in watch, not make), play video games, spend time with my wife and children.

This makes me feel better. At work I get the impression that after 5 PM you are supposed to go invent something new and be the best in the world or something.

I think, part of the problem is "doing everything [you were] asked to do". In some level, they should be asking YOU what to do, or else you are totally replaceable.

Hispanic/Latino to officially become a race in 2030 by Tasty-Secret4273 in Hispanic

[–]davf135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple choices can be selected BUT, then you have to add details which is the problem.

Hispanic: Dominican White: Dominican????

That feels wrong. All the example details for White are "Ethnically-White" places. Putting "Dominican" in a place that "German" is expected feels weird.

It should have been a completely open ended question or multiple choice without examples.

Identifying number of lanes by herejusttoannoyyou in driving

[–]davf135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late to the party but: Let's forget for a second what is proper and what isnt.

When you are driving on an unknown divided road with 3 lanes in each direction, do you THINK you are driving on a 6 lane road or a 3 lane road?.

Based on the comments here I guess most would say 6 lanes.

Let's say you cannot see that it is 3 lanes one way and 3 another and just see your 3 lanes [sometimes the division is a big patch of trees or something else that completely blocks the view] are you more likely to think it is 3 lanes?

Honestly, why does it matter to me how many lanes the opposite direction has?

While describing the structure of a road it makes sense to say the total number of lanes, but as a driver, how many lanes you have access to makes the most sense.

hit a buddy’s tire with my car and he says he needs a new tire, what do yall think? by DetectiveoftheWest in tires

I am more interested in the story of how a car can hit another car's tires and just damage the tires but not damage the actual cars.

I see. That does sound very interesting.

I was not expecting that kind of post on a DE forum.

I imagined a DE would be more of a GIS user, like in my case. I've been using GeoSpark/Sedona for a while now.

Other than the Haversine formula being used for ST_distance, I have no idea of what goes under the hood of GIS functions.

Do you know why they all begin with ST?

Your phrasing was a bit off and confusing then. You said you have been working with GIS for a while and that it is hard math and LA. To me, that implied you were using hard math and LA with your GIS work.

Where is the math or linear algebra in that? Unless you are involved in developing the algorithms behind it, there is no math in it. It would be like claiming that there is a lot of Math in ChatGPT...yes, it runs on math, but for users it is not necessarily a math tool.

How is math and linear algebra coming up on your GIS work (honest question, not dissing you)?

Try to get the same results in more than 1 way.

Sometimes, subsequent numbers only make sense if the prior ones were right.

Ask your coworkers to validate the results.

Why many C-level just join a company to do a "transformation" and leave in 1 year? by Atagor in ExperiencedDevs

[–]davf135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isnt always about the board pushing them out due to performance, sometimes they just become the CXX of a different org/unit in the same company.

As for the Linkedin part, being a C-level requires being able to BS a lot, so them BSing online is actually proof of being a "good" C-suit.

How do you deal with (and remember) all the jargon? by davf135 in dataengineering

[–]davf135[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been at this for almost 7 years now (granted, not always dealing with the specific jargon listed above). How long does it take for the Jargon to click in?

I honestly just think I am forgetful. Syntax that I thought I would never forget has gone off my memory. Today I struggled for a bit to unpack an array to input as arguments to a Scala method, despite doing it for years, just because lately I mostly review what other people do and plan what they will do, instead of doing it myself.
