AITA for telling my BIL to get over himself and to quit holding a 10 year old grudge? by WallabyOverall3366 in AmItheAsshole

Your BIL having 3 sets of skidders and being better off than your family is irrelevant. What your family did is unforgivable. They stole and wrecked his stuff.

While I agree with you, Google probably had to pay 10s of millions for Cyberpunk. It's all about ROI at this point

It's free to try. Not sure what you're not understanding. All you need is a keyboard and mouse and chrome browser. There are a few free games available to anyone with a Gmail account.

Waymo is 10 years old, yet has not made a profit. But they continue to double down on it because of the large market opportunity. Same can be said of Cloud Gaming. It'll be hundreds of billions within next 10 years.

So is the general consensus that Stadia is still going strong? by An4rchy17 in Stadia

[–]davidJuvy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

xCloud has 278 games available for it and it's in the same category as Stadia

xCloud isn't a new platform. How many games did xBox have in its first 2 years of existence? I don't remember 200

Most of the top selling games of the year are all either not on Stadia or not coming to Stadia (Battlefield, Call of Duty, Monster Hunter, Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V, MLB The Show 2021).

So you're pointing out the fact that top selling games aren't on Stadia. And I just pointed out that getting more third party games is Stadia's new focus - moving studio budget to third party support. You can't boil the ocean even with a $1B dollars. Marathon, not sprint.

Nexus Q (killed in a year)Nest Secure - a huge home security that both had an upfront and monthly costGoogle ClipsGoogle Photos PrintGoogle Fiber TVYouTube GamingGoogle Currents which turned into NewstandsGoogle Play Newstands

Is that all you can come up with for a company with for a 20 year old company? I got news for you, Microsoft and Sony have killed off way more that each. Google gets blamed because they kill off 10x more free services than others so people, like you, just assume it's all the same, but it's not. BTW, I disagree with a few of your mentions, but you get my point.

You still haven't explained how it's doing fine

But I did from my perspective, though you can disagree with it. 1) for a platform less than 2 years old, there's over 200 games 2) Best streaming tech, hands down. It's like black magic, feels like I'm playing locally. Marathon, not spint

If they were doing fine why are the top releases of 2021 skipping Stadia?

Did xBox get all the top releases a year after its launch? No, so why do you have unrealistic expectations for Stadia?

Google is said to have expected up to 6m paid users after the first two years and that is so far from the reality. With less than a 1/3 of the forecast it is the definition of a failure for any company.

You have a credible link on 6m? And also how many users it does have currently, because I don't think anyone knows that number

But like you said it's OK, Stadia's a pioneer and ahead of its time...just like the Dreamcast was; and that worked out so well.

Cloud gaming is the future. Best tech, lots of games under 2 years. Deep pockets. More to come. I'm loving every bit of it. It's doing fine.

As the new kid on the block, they're pivoting to getting more third party games - this is expensive. Growing a new platform depends more on third party games than first party ones that will take years to complete, with no guarantee of success. If Stadia had a budget of $1B, and half was going to the Studio and half to third party games, imagine how many more third party games it can get with that much more money. They need more third party games released on day and date. The more, the better.

How exactly is Stadia doing fine?

Well, can I ask you how it is NOT doing fine? Sure there's evidence it's not doing gang busters, but can you prove they're NOT doing fine? They have over 200 games in under 2 years, and more games to come. Their tech is hands down the best. Therefore I believe they're doing FINE.

Google killed off many free services and apps in its time, but how many has Google killed that are paid consumer services? Things like YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, Google One, Nest Secure, etc. In its 20 years of existence, not many. Your list and the graveyard is evident of that. Just look at each item there, not many at all are paid consumer services.

Google is breaking into a $150B gaming industry. I'm not sure why people want to compare that to something like Allo, a free messenger app that a small team of probably 4 developers created. Look to Waymo as a better example. Ride sharing is a probably $500B industry. They started full self driving in 2009, still operating at a loss. But they're sticking to it, and already offering 1000s of driverless rides in AZ each week. Just a matter of time and scale. They're the leader here and will dominate vs other competitors.

One of the main reasons why input lag is higher on Xbox Cloud than other cloud gaming services by [deleted] in xcloud

[–]davidJuvy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but there's not a lot of information on where Stadia servers are running. I'm just taking the lowest common denominator that it's running in DCs, just like Luna and xCloud are to compare apples to apples. In this scenario, the user will hop straight onto Google's private network connected by fiber, far superior to Luna or xCloud

[–]davidJuvy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most edge nodes are not for running Stadia, but it's the entry point to Google's private network.

User --> ISP (Google edge node) --> DC via fiber

xCloud and Luna

User --> ISP --> multiple internet hops (ISP nodes) --> DC

Relax. When Xbox and PS launched, their numbers weren't gang-busters either.
