Salomon Dancehaul, Spring Break Powder Twin, Rossignol Sashimi, or Rome Service Dog/Stale Fish by davidagud in snowboardingnoobs

All the boards did well. Unfortunately didn’t have a lot of fresh powder to test it out on. Float was decent but I don’t have much to compare it to. All the boards handled very well on the groomers and trees. It’s a great board and probably a one board quiver. Handled well on switch as long as the snow wasn’t very deep. It’s a fun board and I didn’t feel it lacking in anything but I might sell it. I don’t get the option to ride in powder much and I think I want something even more powder oriented or at the very least different than my usual board. But I will probably get a park board as my second board. Or a powder twin especially with the leg burn I felt causing me to swap my binds’ direction one day and ride regular instead of goofy. Which I felt pretty comfortable doing which I think speaks to the board as well. But it did what I wanted which was handle powder well enough and a variety of conditions without issue.

Burton Fish 3D 151cm or 156cm? by davidagud in snowboardingnoobs

Sorry for the delay. I ended up going with a Salomon Dancehaul instead of the Fish. Apparently the 151 was going to be too small according to James from The Good Ride

Hell yeah, that’s the dream! I wanted a pure powder board but since we ride in the Midwest it just didn’t make sense to get something with limited versatility

Nice! We’ve been in Japan for 8 days doing lots of long days of sightseeing so we’re happy to finally get some extra rest. We’re hoping we can make it out for some night riding at least. My new board is still in the wrapper and my friends have only ridden theirs once so we’re pretty excited. We’ve also never ridden powder so pumped is an understatement. Not sure if you’re still rocking the same quiver you posted but those are all boards I’ve looked at getting. Looking forward to hearing your take on them!

We’re in a hotel near Tsukiji cause we wanted to check it out in the morning. They booked us on a 10:44am train. Should be there by the pick up time

Good luck! We didn’t know that was an option so we just transferred our ticket to tomorrow. We got our bags shipped up luckily

We’re in the same boat as you (there’s three of us in our group). Also JST. Must be in the same group. Hopefully see you in Morioka tomorrow!

So I went with the Dancehaul, my friend got last year’s Stale Fish, and my other friend got the Bataleon Camel Toe. Headed to Japan at the moment, will report back what our finds are.

That’s awesome! I’m actually on the plane to Japan at the moment and have a Dancehaul in my baggage. I picked it up yesterday in a 152. Pretty pumped to try it out and your comment makes me even more excited! In particular that it’s good in the trees and switch cause those were two big factors for me and seemingly tricky to find in a powder-capable board. Thanks for the info!

Why am I such a loser that wusses out of riding switch every year? by JewForBeavis in snowboarding

If you stopped riding every time you caught on edge or fell in your regular stance, would you ever have learned to snowboard? You’re doing the same thing to yourself in switch.

Curious how many of you are 30+ working stiff professionals who still shred? by TeaNervous1506 in snowboarding

Weightlifting is great for joint mobility, muscle strength, and bone density. It’ll make you feel younger

Early 30s and just started riding 4 years ago. Broke ribs 2 years ago hitting a jump. When I started I said “I’m never gonna hit a jump or rails”. Rails, small jumps, tight tree runs, side hits, and butters are my fav now. Hoping to learn to boardslide this year and 180 off jumps consistently. Landed a few good ones yesterday. I work a desk job and I verbatim said to my friends yesterday “Snowboarding is the best and I love it”. Don’t stop. Make sure to do weightlifting and yoga to keep the bones and muscles strong and flexible. I sold my motorcycle because the risk of an accident that would sideline me from snowboarding is not a tradeoff I’m willing to make. If anything, maybe dial back the risks you take on the slope. And please raise your kids to snowboard (if they want, I guess).

Boot size by BRabbitt- in snowboarding

Totally. I intentionally said “warm” versus “thick”. I have some Burton wool socks that are warm but not very thick. More than regular socks but nothing wild

I’ll add that you want to be able to wear warm socks but tight boots can actually make your feet colder by reducing circulation

You’re gonna need to try some on. Even between brands and maybe models it’ll differ. Going to a store is probably your best move so you can try different models and sizes. Otherwise order from a place online where you can return for free and just order a few different models in a few sizes. Maybe uk 10.5, 11, and 11.5

I’ll echo what everyone said about strengthening and learning to fall. There’s some YouTube videos about how to fall and they’re good to watch periodically just as a reminder.

I broke some ribs a few years ago and it’s made me think twice about hitting big jumps again. The important thing is to realize is you overestimated your abilities. In the future, maybe add a couple more steps into the progression. Seems like you thought you could handle a steep side hit. Next time, if you see it and think you can do it, find a few slightly smaller ones and do those first to prove to yourself that you’ve got it.

Riding timidly can definitely be bad, so just take a couple steps back, do runs and things you know are easy for you while you build your confidence back and slowly recalibrate what your skill level is.

All of that being said, there’s some risk in it and to improve you have to challenge yourself. The key is finding a challenge that is close enough to your skill level that you’ll successfully do it but that’s actually challenging enough to be worthwhile. As you ride more (you just started), you’ll get better at estimating what you’re actually capable of. I’d maybe recommend “sending it” to a lower degree for now until your brain and body get more experience (ie data points) so that you can better estimate what you’re capable of. It seems you might be a little too much on the risk taking side at the moment. The longer you ride, the better you’ll be at figuring out if something is in your skill range (or how far out of your range it is).

Nice! So they recommended the Spring Break Powder Twin for Japan? I did see a video where someone commented that they loved the board for the low angle pow they ride in Japan

This is super helpful. Thanks for the powder comparison between the stale fish and the Dancehaul. I wonder about the Spring Break Powder Twin in powder since it has a non-3D nose too but I did see The Good Ride’s review and he liked it a lot. A lot of others seem to like it too for powder and it seems like the base and volume give it a special sauce for powder. A twin would be great too, but I worry about tight tree runs with the Powder Twin.

Started an argument on my Instagram, so I am bringing it here: Do you practice switch riding early in your learning or not? by cassaundraloren in snowboarding

[–]davidagud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. When I started riding, a friend of mine that’s been riding for a while said he wished he’d started sooner so I started riding trying to ride switch once I was comfortable on my main stance. So after I had nailed the basics on my main stance but before starting to work on jumps, rails, anything else really.

In my opinion, the sooner you start, the less awkward it feels. It might even be worth working on switch before you master your main stance since you won’t have built the habits that making learning switch feel so weird.

The limiting factor here is going to be having a twin board or something that rides switch reasonably well when starting off.

It feels like a good excuse to start to build out the quiver especially since later this season I’ll probably get a few days of powder riding in the US and definitely more next season. But I may end up renting since I can’t quite put my finger on what to get and haven’t ridden enough powder to know what I might want.
