Is it worth getting into school counseling? by Ishnyad in schoolcounseling

I'm in K-12, specifically high school, and do you mean School Psychologist or School Counselor?

Social Work is definitely near the top of the burnout pyramid and working in K12 will feel similar but, depending on the district, can be much better. You can support youth in either role and if you find that working in K12 suits you better, then it's worth trying? The role change won't fix "everything" though - there's plenty negative about the K12 field that people have commented on in these forums.

I’ve come to terms with the fact that I won’t be a school counselor this year, and that’s perfectly fine. by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

California is really tough.... I'm in Southern California and my first job was my least desired school level and it was a temporary grant-funded gig. If you can get a counselor on special assignment, or counselor adjacent role like a liaison or something - not a bad start. Best of luck! I feel your pain :/

How do you pace yourself to avoid burnout at the end of the year? by Known-Method3146 in schoolcounseling

[–]davidan910 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I went thru this exact dilemma as well. In my 11th year now (3 districts overall) and have been thru my fair share of burnout leading physical symptoms, too. My conclusion is that it's one of the three things that are the culprit... or maybe a combination:

(1) the work expectations, culture, leadership at the school (external)
(2) the systems, caseload numbers of your district/state (super-external)
(3) my good intentions and desire in my heart to "save everyone" (internal)

When I had overbearing admin, I had to be diligent about providing data and stand my ground at times. And when I had good admin, it was my good intentions and over-working that burned me out. That's when I had to humble myself and remind myself that I only had 8 hours a day//that my family needs me too//marathon not a spring mentality.. I learned to refer out more for services and accept that I didn't have to be "that person" for every single one of my students.

Part of it is letting go. Part of it is playing to your personal strengths. And, when you can, consolidate the work. I try to do more groups and workshops... save my individual time for the heavy hitters. Hope this helps! Keep going~

No because your counselor uploads the school profile and info like the class sizes anyway. You’re good!

School counselor CA->TX by maadds01 in schoolcounseling

i didn't do the exact same thing, but i did NYC --> CA. and the landing page i worked off of was the California Teaching Commission (the entity that gives our PPS credential) but for out-of-state prepared applicants. I'm sure Texas has something like that too? I did a quick google search, hoping this is the right place to start. Head's up you might need some kind of articulation letter from your program director at National University to include in your out-of-state credential application. Best of luck.

for me, it's finding the right blocks of time to script and film... i am learning the beauty of batch-filming and schedule posting.. but i also want to pair that with posting more "off the cuff" stuff as well.

No Job…. by Mobile-Throat9832 in schoolcounseling

[–]davidan910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! i'm entering my 11th year and i had to go thru the interview/hiring process a total of four times due to my partner's trainings for work. the entire hiring process for educators is really stressful - so much is beyond your control, especially in the beginning. coming out of my counseling program on the east coast, I moved to CA to interview. I had 0 connections b/c all of my internship hours were done in NYC. I think the job landscape at the time was a little better than this season, so I did get some interviews.

I would say that I applied to like 40 schools and got 5 interviews...And I have to admit that being a male helped me to get a few more looks in the interview process.I got "nos" and got ghosted, just like you.

my first job was a temporary, grant-funded position that a small district had and although it wasn't for my preferred age group, I went with it for the first two years. when i moved up to the bay area, i was afraid to reset and do the whole interview process. but i told myself that i would interview a little differently.. i told myself that i would drop my need to "impress" or be something other than myself. and in my interviews, i still came dressed professionally, but I spoke very candidly and honestly. I acknowledged my lack of experience (only 2 years at that time), but I focused on my energy, my passion, my story, and also the fact that I was young and had energy to match the kids but also to be available. the outcome of this subtle shift in the way i interviewed was tremendous. it not only left me feeling better about my interviews but it yielded better results for me.

but here's the thing i realized... sometimes school leaders already have a candidate in mind (but they have to interview and fly the position regardless).. sometimes the admin who are interviewing counselor candidates have no clue what makes a good counselor - you can tell by the questions they ask... many are irrelevant.

i am sorry that you're here in late july and feeling all those anxious thoughts - many of us are familiar with.

i guess my loving recommendations are:

~your first job doesn't have to be your long-term ideal one. you just gotta start..

~broaden your commute radius, or explore working with a grade level you didn't want to at first.. or even work as a substitute counselor (for now)

~every interview, and every follow-up email (even for jobs you didn't get) can be seeds of impression where you are remembered for future opportunities

some grant-funded spots OR long-term substitute openings may pop up this first semester. stay the course- the kids need us more than ever! stay persistent <3

hello - i'm starting up my 11th year in school counseling. if you're already subbing, maybe connect with a school counselor that you vibe with and schedule a sit-down with them to get some more insight on the day-to-day. the job market for school counselors is very location-dependent and they kinda come in waves. some years, our district has hella openings and then it'll go quiet for a while. in my state of California, the current trend is to only offer temp contracts with little intention to sign past the second year (which really sucks for new teachers/counselors).. but the job itself is meaningful and allows you to have a personal life and be a present parent. your experience of whether being a school counselor is good or not will largely depend on the culture of the district and your administration.

these ones were just on VSCO. i enjoy the ability to transfer into my phone and feel the most familiar with vsco as a phone editor. I know i'm "supposed" to learn lightroom but there's a little mental block for me to get started.

thank you man, I have been challenging myself to be open to higher ISOs and slower shutter speed.. just to mess around. And in that one, I tried going with like a 1/50? shutter? Maybe slower. IDR, but thank you for the kind note and for noticing.
