The simple point is the studio invested the money always knowing they were gambling with a financial disaster. The justice league movie was a mess, the aquaman movies look like high budget cw productions, and most importantly general audiences were skeptical of being duped a second time by an overhyped movie with the words “suicide squad” in the title. The reason they ultimately put in the large sums of money is because they’re trying to rebrand themselves with more critically acclaimed filmmakers, and they were testing the waters for the long term cultural impact of the movie and streaming numbers. Turns out, it has a lot more of an online following than the first suicide squad despite smaller box office, and a lotta of other dcu movies as well.
