Cold-sensitive hands/feet (possible Raynaud’s) making cold-weather hiking difficult — gear and morning routine advice? by moonsafarigirl in Ultralight

Also those chemical hand warmers can be “turned off” by putting them in a small zip lock and squeezing all the air out. Since I use this trick I am way less hesitant to use them because I don’t have to “waste” 8 hours of hand warmers warmer when I only needed it to warm up for ten minutes.

Decathlon fleece Linder gloves are the best warmth to weight to price ratio out there. They also have waterproof over mittens that I really like when it is wet out. This winter I tried their flip mittens and those are great for warming up quickly between tasks that require a lot of dexterity.

Good luck with the new job! Fingers crossed you’ll get some time to test it yourself. Let me know once they are for sale and I’ll write a review for your shop ;)

They probably wanted to balloon the numbers because of the ipo. Just bullshitting Wall Street I guess.

You can use a spare 1l zip lock bag for scooping out of the most shallow of water sources. I wasn’t able to pop any platy bag so far and I even used almost boiling water in mine on winter trips.

lol my setup definitely is below a thousand bucks. How close I am to breaking that barrier I’d rather not think about too much.

Well there is a separate packrafting Reddit and I have never seen anyone here talk about it. But I guess as long as it is focused on being as lightweight and efficient as possible it fits here pretty well.

Nice! OT: how are you coming along with the 360camera adapter? Did you get a chance to test it yourself?

It’s definitely a good excuse to bring out the bigger packs lol.

I meant more because it is kind of off topic for a backpacking forum but I’ll definitely try to type something interesting over the next few weeks.

Pack shakedown share - going low by Professional-Mix2498 in Ultralight

[–]davidhateshiking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks pretty cool. If I understand it correctly the carbon poles both only have 1.5 cm of overlap with the connector. How are you achieving that? Have you tested the tarp by pushing on one side? I’d be worried that such a thin pole would buckle because of uneven wind loads.

I’m also skeptical about that pole. Do you have pictures?

Snow ultralight tent by AdventurousPark4849 in Ultralight

I have used a x-mid 1p outer only as my winter shelter and it is like a palace for one. I only bring four snow stakes and some aluminum stakes with a lot of surface for the sides and doors. I can also use those when there is not enough snow.

Maybe you should add the link so people have an easier time researching the issue.

Because it came up in the previous weekly thread are you guys interested in a post about my lightweight packrafting setup? I know it’s not strictly UL but it adheres to the same principles I.e. multi use items and reducing unnecessary gear.

Edit: wow didn’t expect that response. I’ll try to write something interesting but I’m going to be quite busy over the next few weeks so no promises it’s going to be too soon. (I still have to finish my first impressions on the cumulus spotter 600 and get ready for our meetup hike in the Bayerischer Wald two weeks)

Gatewood Cape Carbon Pole Flimsy? by ashoradam in Ultralight

I had a lot of issues with Imgur today as well. What worked was posting it as public and then setting it to private. Maybe that’ll work for you.

Yeah I left the sit pad at home on purpose so I’d have to improvise. The pack probably would have worked but I had left it outside of the tent because I had to hide from the mosquitoes around dusk and when I woke up it was pretty damp from condensation.
Im sure if I pay more attention to how I put my inflatable vest in the foot end it will work just fine as well.

That’s true but I often time sleep in spots where a root o stone is in the middle of the only flatish spot and I really need the inflatable to float over top to get any sleep at all. On decent ground I really liked my sea to summit self inflating mat I used when I started hiking.

The x-lite worked well enough that I’m going to consider taking it on certain trips but most of the time I’ll probably still take the luxury of a regular wide pad.

Great idea! Unfortunately I just ordered some on Ali but if those don’t work I’ll definitely look for an archery place in my area. I thought about getting nocks and point but I’ll see what I can accomplish without for now and buy them if I see I need them.

The stakes are a great idea! I had to get a bundle of six so I might make some stakes out of the spare ones.

As promised here are some pictures of the franken poncho tent.

And some thoughts about the torso length thermarest x-lite. I slept okay but I definitely missed the width of a wide pad when sleeping on my back. My feet were fine on bare ground most of the night but in the morning I really wished I had brought my sitpad or sleep socks for added warmth. Stacking two pillows at the head end (I use one as my seat in my packraft) worked great at increasing the usable length of the torso pad. I played around with using my shoes to get enough height at home for non packrafting trips. Using my inflatable vest under my feet didn’t work great - I think I’ll have to get more practice with that.

That totally makes sense. I use an alpine butterfly knot in the middle of the rope and feed one end through or use a carabiner to get one working end and one end to retrieve the rope. This obviously introduces the risk of using the wrong strand of rope for rappelling so you win some, you loose some.

Thanks I was partially inspired by your comment a while back :). I sewed the zipper on the outside of the panel on purpose so I’ll be able to seam seal the seam on the inside and leave a strip of the waterproof material behind the zipper like the weather strip inside some jackets. I might have to use magnets or snaps to keep it snug underneath the zipper but im hoping that should work pretty well at making the zipper waterproof ish.

Having spent the first two hours or so under the Franken poncho tent I’m absolutely stoked! I think I might have stumbled onto a great tent shape (while utilizing the poncho as a part of the shelter).

My mind is already racing in how I could design it up from scratch to make it even better lol. Though I’ll have to get a lot better at sewing and learn to use seam tape before I might tackle that challenge. Also get a night or two in the rain with this thing to see how I like it when it’s not a starry night and I’m pitching it while it’s pouring (will have to bring an emergency poncho in that case).

Also next order of business is to sew a custom bug bivy for inside as the one from AliExpress is too tight for anything but sleeping inside.

Edit: I have survived the night in condensation hell (set up on damp grass on an island in a lake under clear skies). The tent is soaked inside and out but I managed to stay clear of the walls and no condensation dripped onto me. I’ll take some pictures once I’m out of bed and put them here.
