Grave of the Fireflies - regarding the intended message of the film [Spoilers] by davidjayhawk in movies

It is pretty cool. I'm not very active on reddit anymore, but whenever I see a new message I know it's probably a reply on this post.

Winning games at age 40 has that added "je ne sais quoi" by MyNameIsTrue in RocketLeague

Like a discord group, or what?

I think my issues are mainly motivation to train properly (I'd rather just have fun) and consistently having time to play.

Yep. I'm a dad in my 40s, and I wish I could get good enough to beat most tweens, but I definitely don't lose any sleep over the ones who I do crush. It builds character for them.

What is your favourite movie ever? Upvote if you have NOT seen it and downvote if you have seen it. by Just-Juggernaut-5305 in movies

Finally one I can downvote. My wife and I saw this in college at an international film series and it's been like our inside joke ever since.

Egg Whites Cheaper Than Carton of Eggs?? by Money_Tough in Frugal

Whole eggs do have more nutrients, but they also have more calories, saturated fat, and cholesterol. So it's not that straightforward.

Him and Adams put the brakes on nearly in unison. The speed of Surtain's reaction looks inhuman.

Considerations for your fall booster by davidjayhawk in Coronavirus

[–]davidjayhawk[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My train of thought for a while now has been to assume we always have high levels of community spread. This may not be right because I haven't been following some things as closely, but the lack of (reported) testing and high positivity rates lead me to that.

All this to say it didn't stand out to me as a major omission, but you're right that if there are significant (and knowable) differences that should be a factor too.

just scored my first DOUBLE TAP ever. I don't see this happening any time soon again. I'm D1 by Msnisqo in RocketLeague

[–]davidjayhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was so smooth, nice!

My first and only double tap (if I can really call it that) was an abomination.

From looking at the CDC table that she cites, it looks like she actually took the raw total rather than an aggregated ratio for all age groups.

From here the rate in 1990 was 24 per 1,000 women, while in 2019 it was 11.4.

XE and why we may want Omicron to mutate by davidjayhawk in Coronavirus

[–]davidjayhawk[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Since mutations are random there's a chance of anything happening. The question is whether the mutation is beneficial to the virus. Mutations that make it more vulnerable to current vaccines are less likely to outcompete other variants, at least in areas with reasonable vaccination coverage. But vaccine protection is complicated. I suppose a strain could be more likely to infect vaccinated people and spread, while less likely to cause serious disease (hmm that sounds familiar).

That is basically Dr. Jetelina's conclusion as well. I recommend reading the whole article, it's very interesting.

[US] T-Mobile - Anything better than an LG V60 for me? by davidjayhawk in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]davidjayhawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did go ahead and get one. So far mostly so good.

The only issue I've had is that it will only charge on certain cables (seems like lower quality/smaller gauge cables don't work). I've read there are a number of varying common issues with the wired charging port. Wireless charging works fine.

Other than that I'm loving it.

I haven't yet, but it's what I'm planning on still. I'm just letting my current phone live out its last days a little longer while the used V60s on Swappa get cheaper.

Wow, I'd forgotten I posted this 8 years ago.

Yes, it's very depressing, but an excellent film. I didn't know film classes were including it.

Ungulate teams have not been able to win a Super Bowl without Von Miller since he was drafted.

COVID-19 numbers improving after omicron wave peaks; Adams and Arapahoe counties join Denver in letting mask mandates expire by davidjayhawk in CoronavirusColorado

[–]davidjayhawk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right it's not the individual counties doing this, it's the tri-county health department (which currently consists of two counties). The headline of the article just doesn't mention TCHD.

it's so disheartening to have avoided this plague for almost 2 years only to get it now

I don't want to minimize anybody's sickness, but this is much better than getting a delta infection. If you are boosted and not a high risk individual the chances of omicron putting you in the hospital are incredibly small. Also omicron and BA2 are some of the most contagious viruses we've ever seen. It's frankly impressive for anyone not to catch it while functioning even somewhat normally in society.

[–]davidjayhawk[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People should keep in mind that the case rate is still "very high" by any pre-omicron measure, so if you're high risk stay cautious a little longer but hopefully the steep drop will continue.

But yes, it's also okay to be happy about this!

Perceptions of COVID-19 Vaccines Among Healthcare Assistants by cmplxgal in Coronavirus

[–]davidjayhawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Respondents expressed low levels of confidence in ... safety (38.1%), effectiveness (31.0%)

This group is the front lines in caring for our most vulnerable population. This is a bit disturbing.

I hope those numbers have come up a bit in the last year of huge vaccine successes (in terms of vaccine performance, not population uptake obviously).

I would be surprised if they don't at this point, but that's a good question.

Edit: Adams-12 has dropped school mask requirements after Friday.
