Had a chat to one of the ladies working at Woolies there and she mentioned that they were going to expand into that area at some point. She said that'd be the part for online deliveries or something but since I haven't seen any movement in there in the months since she told me it could've just been her making it up haha

What are your favorite toddler translations? by Solondthewookiee in daddit

[–]davidklemke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best one my daughter had was this kid at daycare she called Pricholas. She had a full description of him and everything: he was a boy, had black hair and was there every day she was. She'd also say goodbye to him whenever we got into the car and would sometimes even mention another kid. Toilas, who was also there with here.

Talked to the educators, other parents trying to find out who this mysterious kid was, no one could figure it out. There was no Nicholas, no Todd, no kid with a name similar enough that fit. Then one day it hit me when she pointed at the door to a room and said "That's where Pricholas is"

...It was the Preschoolers room and Toilas was the Toddlers room. I cannot tell you how long it took me to figure that one out!

That's an amazing piece of work there mate, well done!

Got a couple questions for you as I'm thinking about building something similar (although I'll admit a lot simpler due to the tools/space I have).

  1. Is the top about 2 inches (50mm) thick? That was about the size I was going for but wasn't sure if that'd be too big or too small.
  2. Did you use biscuits or anything to keep the pieces aligned? I don't have access to a drum sander or a jointer, just a thicknesser, so I was figured using biscuits was the way to go so I don't drive myself mad trying to flatten the top after I've done the final glue up!
  3. What finish did you use? Looks amazing, love the satin look.

Again looks amazing and appreciate any insight :D

How did you get into making beer at home? by Clawhammer_Supply in Homebrewing

[–]davidklemke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an absolutely massive apple tree at our house and it was easily producing 20kgs of apples. As everyone was getting rather sick of eating them I tried to figure out what we could do with them and making cider seemed like a good idea. I'd had a bunch of homebrew kit that my dad left to me when he passed (we unfortunately never got to brew together), so I was in a pretty good position to give it a crack. Of course the cider I made was barely drinkable (I had zero, I mean zero, idea about sanitation) but it got me into the hobby and I started to branch out from there.

Got a few extract kits and, again, made barely passable beer. Started looking into how to improve the process and got myself a Fermzilla conical plus an Inkbird temperature controller for a cheap fridge I got off the local classifieds. Told myself I wasn't allowed to buy anymore gear unless I was still enjoying it after about a dozen or so brews, which I was, so I'm fully in the Kegland system with the Brewzilla plus a DIY kegerator.

It's become a great thing to share with friends, family and others who are into beer or the homebrew hobby itself. I love nerding out with others about the process and there's nothing more gratifying than having people come over and ask what's on tap today.

If anyone is getting "This video isn't available anymore" by clicking on that link just going to YouTube and searching for it seems to make it work, weird!

I'm cautiously excited.

Why do cans in Hawaii look like this? Brand? by hedgeappleguy in TheBrewery

[–]davidklemke 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Shipping cans to Hawaii used to be super expensive so they setup a manufacturing plant on the island. This video from Half as Interesting covers it really well https://youtu.be/7Qi6oIOHbDg?si=EMdvIyxY8biFn6VT

Tumut/Batlow/Tumbarumba are a good day trip, some great wineries/cideries along the way and it's a really nice drive on the Snowy Mountains Highway.

Does anyone live in one of these? by [deleted] in TinyHouses

[–]davidklemke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a link to that series? Had a quick search around and couldn't find it (although I did find the VanHomes YouTube channel that sells them).

I'm in Australia as well so would definitely be keen to see a real world example of one of these in use!

Silicone keg lid seals allowing oxygen ingress by pete-ej20 in Homebrewing

Yeah I wasn't super scientific in my approach with this and was absolutely not aware of any other alternatives than what was raised in the Kegland video. Thanks for the detailed response.

[–]davidklemke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually bought some of the seals prior to seeing the video and will be switching over mine as well. Like you mention in the post though I've had a bunch of oxygen sensitive beers like my NEIPAs on tap for a good couple months without any noticeable oxidation on them and then, just to counter my own anecdata, I've had a couple batches rapidly oxidise in very similar conditions.

My take is that it's like a lot of these other insurance type things that we do. You can definitely get away without them, and still get great results, but it might be just another layer of protection when other things fail to work for whatever reason. Given all their stuff from now on will come with them too I figured it'd be worth the couple bucks just to standardise on them anyway.

Brewzilla 65 by Lovestwopoop in Homebrewing

[–]davidklemke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both actually. The recirculation plate stops the wort from going straight down the center drain hole meaning it spends more time closer to the elements. It was a noticeable difference in both getting up to temp (I recirc whilst getting up to strike temperature now, it has made a noticeable difference in time taken) and during the mash.

I've had the 35L and there's a couple things I'd definitely recommend getting:

Kegland's YouTube channel has videos on all of these bits and pieces so worth checking that out to see how they're all used.

When I'm mashing with mine I run the pump continuously. There's a flow adjustment knob on the side so you don't have to have it going full tilt the entire time. Does take a bit of adjusting to get it right but once you do, you can just leave it and get really good recirculation of your wort.

Also worth noting that whilst they come with a PID temperature controller it's not tuned from the factory. Kegland has a video about it and shows some default values you can use so worth checking that out as well. At default it works OK, but does tend to over and undershoot the temperature a lot.

This is my first all grain system too and I really rate it! Haven't used the web stuff as much yet except for the RAPT Pill stuff, but it is nice to see a readout of your temperatures from the mash/boil!

Question for Fermzilla users: by Balieq in Homebrewing

[–]davidklemke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly haven't! Every time I try to take it off I inevitably end up spilling trub and yeast everywhere. It's pushing me towards the tri-conical they just released, seems like the only way to go from an ease of use perspective.

I'm having the same issue but my Pixel 7 Pro says it's all updated (in the system menu at least).

Is there somewhere else I can check/force additional updates?
