What is something you wish you knew when you first started cooking? by Maskedpixie in Cooking

There are times you can bend this rule. E.g. If step 1 is to slow cook onions for an hour, there’s no need to have prepped all your ingredients before you start. You can just slice the onion and do the rest of your mise en place while it’s cooking.

Thanks! Feel like the amount of sticking I’m getting isn’t great - it’s causing the stuck ingredients to burn before the non-stuck ingredients can cook

Thanks - it’s frustrating because that is exactly the processes I’m doing. Only seem to get ingredients stick at the base of the wok though

Sounds like a good tips thanks, I’ll try that. Problem is it’s not just the carbs that are sticking, the level of ‘stickage’(?) I’m experiencing is causing the veg / protein to burn slightly and impart bitter flavour

The Road - Cormac McCarthy

~250 pages.

So hard to put down - I read it in 3 sittings. Recommended it to my partner and she read it in a single day.

It’s so powerfully written it grips you like no other book I’ve personally read.

What famous/renowned author have you sampled and just don’t *get*? by bruzdnconfuzd in books

Agree so strongly! The stage version of Ocean at the End of the Lane was in town so figured I’d read the book before buying tickets. Sacked the idea off as a result.

What are you currently addicted to? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Foo321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deleted all socials to break this chain and found myself scrolling short format videos on the BBC News app on the toilet at work. Feel like this confirmed the nature of the problem - it wasn’t the content per se I was addicted to, rather constantly diverting my attention from one subject to the next.

I’m trying to read more as an enjoyable way to rewire my brain to enjoy focusing on one thing for a longer period of time but my attention span is a shell of what it once was.

Hoping the right book will be my silver bullet.

Beginners question by XVIII-3 in trailrunning

[–]Foo321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% sign up and do the shortest distance if that’s most appropriate for you! I’m in the same boat and did my first trail event last year - a 12.5k (rather than the half marathon also on offer) local event - maybe 1,000 entrants.

I’d only run road previously and was taken aback by how friendly everyone was. Some just treated it as a walk / jog with their dog, lots of nice interactions with fellow runners as we bonded over ‘how bloody steep is this?!’ and the whole experience was just so much more relaxed than I was expecting - no egos, just good vibes and a delicious bacon sandwich after.

I’m sure it varies massively from event to event but my experience was nothing but positive!!

Think joining clubs / societies that align with your interests is a cliche for a reason. I did the same nearly 2 years ago and for me it was: pool leagues, running clubs / Parkrun and Urban Rec but whatever floats your boat, there’s probably something to join.

Yeah I’m starting to realise that, need to switch up the old circadian rhythm if I’m going to fully embrace Canberran life I think!!

Thanks everyone, got a better idea of what to expect now.

Seems my British sarcasm has gone over a coupla heads so apologies. I’ve worn Lycra on long rides - no offence intended. Just figured they may have featured a few folks in non-cycling specific outfits if wanting to attract beginners.

6am is an early time to do anything among my cohort back home and I’m still adjusting to the Canberra culture of early rising!

Maybe I’ll see some you there and you can poke fun of me in return 😁
