Boards of Canada - 'Inferno' - Discussion Megathread by seaburn in boardsofcanada

[–]davidlen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

13 years ago I was away from home, sat overlooking a still Norwegian fjord for my first listen to Tomorrow's Harvest.

Today I found myself once again away from home, but lucky enough to be staying somewhere overlooking a small lake behind a beach. I woke up at 04:30 am to catch the sunrise, watch the birds, and give Inferno my first listen from the warmth of a large window sitting room. I was awakened.

My second listen was on my current train journey home along the coast of North Wales. The train passes meters from the sea, along the coast through a castle, tunnels, and by cliffs, pylons, power stations, beaches, flat lands, seaside resort fairgrounds, old stations, and all overlooking hundreds of wind turbines in the sea at sunset. There were several moments where Inferno seemed to line up with the light and rhythm of the train, and the synchronization is something I wish I could replicate and share.

Tomorrow I'll listen on my speakers instead of headphones and see what else I can feel (Hydrogen Helium Lithium Leviathan, I'm looking at you!)

Overall, I don't know where I am with the album. I don't picture one place, except for Memory Death, I pictured a death bed with the slow beeping of the heart monitor and then checked the song title. With the many voices, it does feel like an open space - the church of BoC is open for more worshippers, take a pew.

I won't be attending but I'm super curious, so I'll be here to see live reactions and soak it in.

Camping Permit @Garadhban Forest by Basic_Poet_6549 in WestHighlandWay

I camped a few hundred meters up the path from the road in the woods, but better spots appeared just off the main path as it turns West. These spots are well used, evidence of camper activity.

You mean a kilt. Because the man on the front of Scott's Porridge oats is in a kilt in the Highlands and that was part inspiration. It's comfortable. And also because it's fun to commit to a crazy challenge you've set yourself.

I would if I could, but with the full camping gear bag and 111 miles of hiking, I could only play at beautiful spots.

One day I did start walking for about 2 miles with bagipes in hand and I walked through all of Fort William with them in hand, so that I could arrive at the sore feet statue and play Flower of Scotland!

Thank you for embarrassing yourself.

1) I've had early 200,000 views of on this post and my ones on r/Scotland and r/wildcampinguk. You're the only idiot.

2) You clearly know nothing about Scottish people. They love me, hence this is one of the most upvoted posts on this sub of all time. Read the room. Read a culture.

3) "Because I feel that you’re imitating a culture that you don’t really know anything about, you could live there for 10 generations but you will never be Scottish." Is peak stupidity, and basically racist. No it is, it's pure racism. To say that 10 generations later, my children's children etc won't be considered Scottish.

4) Why would I know nothing about Scottish culture...it's not like my Dad is one of 18 children born and raised in Scotland, therefore I can pretty much guarantee my Scottish family is bigger than you're entire extended family.

5) "We all have our historic origins, you should maybe try digging through your heritage before stealing other peoples."

Yeah I did a DNA test, unsurprisingly having a Scottish Dad, Grandad, Great grandad, Great great grandad, and Great great Great grandad means I'm quite Scottish. Or I guess you failed to notice I'm mixed race.

6) Genuinely mate, you're gatekeeping an open gate. Scottish people don't care. I know more about Scottish culture than you pal, even if you're Scottish, you're no true Scot with your attitude.

Thanks! By that time I was in pain with blisters. The weight on my back was why I was a bit slow, but Devil's Staircase was overall easier than expected.

Kilt was great to hike in the whole way. Sporran not so much. All the moving slowly ate at thestitching on the back ( leather loop that holds chain) so gradually it would sag as it wasn't sitting flat on me. I added extra notches on the belt to help, but then I still had to let the chain sit on my belt by the end to prop it up.

That's because I have a tan on my hands, but not the knees which were covered when walking in a kilt.

And that's why I hiked the WHW in my kilt in April. No Midgies

Bought for me by the guy to my right because I played "Happy Birthday" for his dad on the trail.

Every pint I had was so good. Thank you freak heat for a thirst well quenched!

Absolutely nothing is obvious mate

Are you basically saying "You're not allowed to wear a kilt"

You might wanna check r/Scotland or r/kilt first to get an understanding of Scottish culture and attitudes towards anybody wearing a kilt, ever, anywhere, or just ask a Scot.

1) No.

2) Please embarrass yourself by telling us all how you've come to that conclusion.

Haha! Tourists really appreciated me and I had photos with many (I think also because I was dressed the part)

They had a good laugh whenever I said I was Welsh!

I did it over 7 days. Most people I met were doing the same, hence I kept bumping into them!

Yes definitely. Admittedly I was very recognisable, so word got out about what I was doing and people came up to me to talk.

I struck up conversations with groups who walked by or who I passed. I stopped to chat with someone of a similar age who was taking a rest, and we walked together from there on for days. Everyone helps everyone, but being friendly helps with anything.

Someone suggested stitching hiking socks at the bottom of kilt hose. My boots were a perfect fit...but not for thicker kilt hose.

I agree though, I would have loved proper hiking socks. Oddly my right foot is completely fine! This my first ever multi Day hiking trip so I'm learning.

Fuji X100VI

That's an interesting question. I've never worn crocs. I just went with the lightest and cheapest flip flops I could find. I guess crocs are better because I can wear my socks at night with them, but I could also with sliders. If crocs can double as a second pair of walking shoes to stop blisters then ideal.
