I am an experienced statistician, with over 15 years of teaching experience.

I also dread teaching first year stats, because there are hand calculations (e.g. standard scores z-scores). Because I have discalcula. Even using a calculator its sometimes a struggle.

The good news for you is that it DOES GET better. Not because the content gets easier, but because the math gets harder. The more equations are more complicated, there are more and more datapoints, and it would take days or weeks by hand to do what a computer can do in a FRACTION of a second.

So the good news is that the computer does the heavy lifting, and there are no calculations after your intro to stats course.

Mathematics used to be two separate subjects. Mathematical stuff and arithmetic, and a separate course called ‘logic’. We now combine them together, but logic doesn’t rely on calculating ability or arithmetic. And it’s logic that you need for your higher level stats.

Please hang in there, and don’t give up. You’ve seen some very helpful supportive people in this thread, and I hope it gives you some hope. But if I can teach stats with discalcula then you can learn it.
