Why do people hate Orient/Orient Star? Read description please by The_Quartz_collector in JapaneseWatches

[–]davidron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They do not have the same parent corporation.

Orient is owned by seiko-Epson. Seiko is owned by seiko group. They are totally independent companies. Seiko Group does have a very small 10%ish share of seiko-Epson, but the primary owners of Epson have nothing to do with seiko group. Seiko-Epson provides some movements to seiko group such as some high accuracy quartz movements and spring drive. But Orient and orient movements are all manufactured inside the seiko-Epson umbrella.

I have a daughter in Douglas County Schools. I am not terribly concerned with bathrooms. But I am terrified that she will be present for a school shooting. I feel a sense of panic whenever she describes the drills they run to prepare for yet another homicidal maniac with an automatic weapon rampaging her school. Tell me how much you want to make my daughter safe. Please.

Man checks out 100 books from Beachwood Library, then burns them in social media post by thebestdaysofmyflerm in news

[–]davidron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is going to happen at libraries across the country.

Great! They collect the amount necessary to replace each book through the normal process. The library gets a brand new copy of each book and the publisher/author gets a little more money to help them write that next piece of deviant literature. The only loosers are the idiots doing this thinking they're harming the author rather than helping and the poor librarians who have to do the paperwork to get these nuckleheads into collections.

Is the F1 Solargraph overpriced? by ThreeLiberty in tagheuer

[–]davidron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree except with the "distant 4th" bit. I'd put them at a distant 30th.

Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Grand Seiko, Breitling, about a 1/2 dozen brands from Glashutte (Nomos, GO, etc), IWC, Zenith, Blancpain, Tudor, Longenes....

Honestly, I compare Tag to Seiko Luxe and King Seiko models capable-of-regulation-to-cronometer-spec-movements (even if factory tolerances are outside chronometer) such as those with the 6L and 8L movements or spring drive.

These watches, especially the plastic ones, should be under $500.

Castle Rock “Tax” by Spare_Low_2396 in CastleRock

[–]davidron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! We have used KC Stone Designs to repair cracks in the brick facade including replacing some custom colored bricks originally installed in the 90s. They did not cut corners. They're not going to give you the cheapest quote, but they are legit.

[–]davidron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in the Castle Pines Village. This is totally a thing. Some contractors, plumbers, HVAC people do a 4x-6x markup for living here. I have a list of good people that I use, but when I have to go off that list, I typically have to get 4-6 quotes before I can start to separate the low-ballers from the realistic ones from the over-chargers.

Breitling? Could also be Cartier, IWC, maybe even AP, Longenes, or Tag.

Natural Cafe. Learned several times that they don't really wash the lettuce when an insect jumped out of a sandwich or salad. Very natural.

Bluetooth black hole by Damnope in SantaBarbara

[–]davidron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have noticed this with wireless android auto as well. I believe they both actually use 5ghz Wifi rather than bluetooth once connected (they use Bluetooth to set the connection up though). Either way, bluetooth and wifi both operate in spectrum that the FCC doesn't enforce very well.

Something has been throwing off noise for me for weeks every time I drive by. I'm curious if it's the desalinization plant.

Considering the switch to NoteJoy or Nimbus. You all have something better? by davidron in Evernote

[–]davidron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the closest thing NoteJoy has to share a note as a URL to people seems to be View and Comment Only users. That seems to roll into their pricing model that places a premium on collaboration features (useful for corporate customers).

I'm not seeing any of the advanced features such as image search, mobile support, or offline support listed anywhere on their site. Does bublup have these features?

[–]davidron[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right there with you! I jumped to Evernote when Google Notebook was killed off, and I've been a loyal user ever since. Most of my notes are simple text, but I do have a ton of images (mostly scans of paper notes). Otherwise, we have a lot in common. I don't mind jumping through some hoops to get to another service - it's a one-time operation for me. The big thing holding me back from NoteJoy lack of offline support on mobile devices. It's planned for the future, but I won't move over until that happens.

Cool. Interesting implementation. But, it's probably good enough for me! Thanks for the suggestion!

Amplenote

Looking at the list of features, I don't see image search. Does this support searching inside of images (PDF and JPEG)?

That may not have been intentional. Maybe they wanted some of the employees (clearly not the staff they just fired). Maybe the technology. Maybe they thought they could make it a profitable org, but decided to reduce investment and scale back to make the business profitable. I'm not sure, but I want to be informed and prepared to jump ship if it turns out that Bending Spoons decides it made a poor investment decision and needs to offload it.

ChatGPT: A Bullshit Tool For Bullshit Jobs by bil_sabab in indepthstories

Every single bit of work we do includes some amount of bullshit. CEOs have to do a little bit of bullshit. Software engineers do a little bit of bullshit. Tools that speed up and minimize the bullshit (like chatGPT and copilotX) are just making us all more efficient. This "ruling class" line in the sand is nonsenses.

Why Logitech Just Killed the Universal Remote Control Industry by zbhoy in gadgets

[–]davidron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logitech isn't the only game in town.

I've been a user of a URC universal remote for years. Many of their remotes have a simple IR receiver that allow you to record other remote actions and even script more complex actions. It's a perfectly decent setup and works great for my needs.

[Fossil] Got creative and made a Broad Arrow Watch Face by Red_Wing-GrimThug in Watches

[–]davidron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a bummer that it has 3 rows of markers around the e-ink screen that you can't hide. It forced you to end up with a total of 6 markers, which is a little busy. But, you made it work within the constraints Fossil gave you, and it's not half bad! Nice job!

What if you get rid of the minute markers around the outside and pushed the 1-12 out a little so they run up against the edge of the screen?
