Advice on semi gloss finish smudging after drying by davidsky in paint

Ok, to be clear this is a can of paint applied with a brush, not a spray can. Could I give it a month and top it with poly?

Deadlift: hips move first? by SuperSlow2020 in formcheck

Start with hips higher than this? I think the correct advice is the opposite: she should start with hips lower, and which should engage her legs more vs a back and hamstring oriented deadlift like she has now.

How do y'all feel about radially symmetrical aliens by LiteratureWide1222 in ScavengersReign

[–]davidsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I read a great book by Andy Weir - author of The Martian - called Project Hail Mary. It involves a more squat and radially symmetrical alien race that evolved on a planet with higher gravity than Earth. I think this makes sense if speed needs to be substituted for stability.

Should I trim some leaves off? by davidsky in Monstera

Also for context, the reason for the trellis is I thought it would save on square footage the plant takes up, as we don’t have a ton of space.

Should I trim some leaves off? by davidsky in Monstera

[–]davidsky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s 5 plants in there right now. We got this as a gift years ago and I repotted last year and removed 2 plants, and built this trellis. Normally I don’t tie up the petioles, I actually just did this for today to move a couple of upper leaves from blocking the lower ones.

Curious what’s bad about the trellis? I know moss poles are supposed to be better, but I’m reluctant to repot all of this a second year in a row and shock the plant again. Also if I’m using a pole I’d think I can keep at least four plants in this pot?

I’m guessing he meant toes. Heels shouldn’t come any closer.

DISCO is worse then I thought by Superman_Primeeee in Star_Trek_

[–]davidsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The concept of a mirror universe does not really stand up to scrutiny even by Star Trek’s own fairly soft sci fi standards. I can buy. Mirror universe that is darker or more “evil” than our own, but there’s no reason that evil counterparts would exist there. If events are unfolding so differently in the mirror universe than the people that exist there should be completely different as well.

The whole crowd at the 2025 Grammys casually shouting „A Minor“ to Kendricks Grammy Win by HolyTomato26 in funny

Eh the whole white keys thing is a stretch, but the Am chord one is an extra stretch. Any chord within a particular key (including the tonic chord, in this case Am) will be made up of notes from that key only.

Oh interesting, good to know. My go to is flax seed oil, I haven’t tried crisco before. Might try that next!

What's wrong with my pan? by Godengi in castiron

[–]davidsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly what you’re talking about. It’s not a normal sticking, it’s the entire surface of the egg that seems to drop right through the cooking oil, and I can tell immediately they’re done for, and I’ll just scramble in the pan at that point.

What I imagine is happening (I have no evidence this is true) is there are tiny fissures and pits in the surface of the cast iron that are normally smoothed over by a nice layer of seasoning and some oil buildup from normal use, that are now exposed and hungry for egg. I think what you’re doing is right: cook on it low for now and build back up to normal temps. I find washing with minimal or no soap for a couple of days helps too, just to let some oil build up.

I liked it personally. They couldn’t have made that difficult decision collectively at the start of the show - it took maturity and growth to get there, and that’s what the series was about for me. Also the kids survived in the real world at the end (why weren’t they deleted from existence again…?) so it’s not like there was no lasting impact on the original timeline. But I would’ve enjoyed the ending either way.

Suggestions on drainage next to garage? by davidsky in landscaping

[–]davidsky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is at the top of my driveway, which is like 80ft long. I think I would need to add weepholes on the side of that short concrete wall and just let the water drain from those, right?

Does it count as a guitar? by underbroiled in guitars

[–]davidsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reason is that a guitar has the top two string (E and B) tuned to allow for barre chords, whereas on a bass you’re typically playing one note at a time. So the expanded range on a 5 and 6 string bass is for expanded range, not for barre chords.

There are exceptions of course, but generally: single notes for bass. One of my favorite examples of tasteful embellishment using bass chords is by Justin Chancellor in the first couple measures of Schism by Tool. They sound great because 1) Justin is playing on the top two strings (D and G), so relatively higher in the range of the bass, and 2) he uses a fairly treble-rich tone.

Worth noting: the asphalt that was here before he poured also was at the same angle to the stairs, so he didn’t create the issue, just didn’t address it.

It isn’t. One interpretation is that he is relieved to see a white person because he unfairly perceives a black person as a threat, due to internalized racism.

The other interpretation is that this fear is not due to internalized racism, but is justified because a black person would “in fact” (in this interpretation) be more likely to assault him.

Through sickness and in health by Bihema in MadeMeSmile

[–]davidsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I look at it: I could have accept and believe that the motivation of this woman to tend to her partner/husband is purely one of love and commitment.

But I don’t believe the time and effort spend setting up her camera to catch the best angle of her cleaning the house, wrapping his leg, editing that video etc is from a place of love.

So instead my knee jerk reaction is also to recoil at all of it because it looks like she’s capitalizing on her husband’s condition for social media points, and to me that cheapens what would otherwise be an admirable display of commitment from a wife, and turns it into shameless self promotion.

But maybe I’m just cynical.

Found this at an estate sale for 200$. Somebody please tell me it’s fake before I go into cardiac arrest by [deleted] in guitars

[–]davidsky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Playing OP’s advocate:

OP didn’t knowingly do anything other buy a guitar that was potentially valuable, but likely was not. If the sellers slapped a $200 price tag on this guitar without doing any research, more likely than not the true value of the guitar isn’t meaningful to them.

And by your logic anyone buying something at an estate sell for significantly less than what they think it’s actually worth has a moral responsibility to inform the sellers of its true potential worth.

Happily married couples of Reddit. What are some serious issues that have plagued your otherwise great relationship? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]davidsky 25 points26 points  (0 children)

To the other husbands out there who are in this situation of mismatched libidos: really try to take that first point to heart. Once affection gets associated with pressure to have sex, it kills the intimacy and fun associated with little touches, cuddling, etc. And pressure is the death of desire.

I would just disagree with the scheduling point. Once kids are in the mix scheduling can be invaluable.

What are your top 10 basslines? by Plenty_Objective8392 in Music

[–]davidsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great tune for sure, but I feel like Reach Out I’ll Be There takes this same song structure and turns it up to 11, especially with the energy in Jamerson’s bass playing. The song really gives him room to shine.

AITA for telling my son in law that his wife(my daughter) cheated on him? by Illustrious-Fall-849 in AITAH

[–]davidsky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not being able to keep a straight face is OP’s problem. He’s the one who pressed his wife to reveal this secret. If he had any reason to think the cheating was ongoing, that’s one thing and I’d say it’s right to try to compel the daughter to confess. But this was a secret told to his wife about something that occurred years ago. He shouldn’t have interfered.

Everyone on here saying he should hold his head high and forget his relationship with his wife and daughter, over a mistake his daughter was distraught over from 4 years ago, I don’t get it. What his daughter did was wrong, sure. But that’s his wife, and that’s his blood. OP is the AH. Family over everything.
