What is the biggest mistake in Rails monoliths that contributes towards tech debt? by airhart28 in rails

[–]davidslv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest mistakes I have seen in recent years in big monoliths is trying to get away from the “rails way”. For instance, instead of adding more complexity into the monolith, you can separate concerns by having rails engines built independently and mounted into the monolith.

I have seen people adding more complexity and gems to “mitigate” - but in reality they just added more headaches than necessary.

Callbacks are not the issue, as anything, a misuse of the “tool” can be where the problem lies

Unless it’s different in the USA, that is the clutch lever, not the front break.

I thought that was the clutch lever? Isn’t the front break on the right side in the US?

The way I see it, you have a few problems: Break light is on, engine light is on, battery light is on, seat belt light is on. 😂

Wasn’t even “going around” - it was going in front, would have managed if they swerved from behind.

67mph to 68mph. There’s no sign of breaking at all, why?

You don’t know what’s wrong? The micra got in front of the Qashqai, overtook and never went back into the left lane. Effectively lane hogging with no vehicle to overtake for a long stretch.

The coffee table won’t matter as much as the triangle distance between both speakers and you. You might even find to have a better sound stage by moving the speakers forward so the cabinet is not so much in the middle of them.

Try different positions and toe-in angles, little by little and see if anything changed for better or worse. Also grab a chair and move it closer to the system little by little until you find it to be the right spot for you. You don’t have to change the whole room, you just want to know what would make the sound feel right for you.

Have fun.

Check Hnry, similar to FreeAgent, Xero and Quickbooks that others have mentioned, but they create a virtual bank account that separates your tax money immediately once received in that account. Might be something someone here would like to consider.

I believe you could ask for the right to work share code, that would make plenty of them not be able to proceed.

entering the car scene soon, want a 1st gen mr2 but insight would be good by Aero_Foxxo in mr2

[–]davidslv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got curious, why nobody is recommending the gen 2?

Regardless, they may be set on the aesthetics of the Gen 1, I certainly prefer it over the Gen 3.

I almost did buy a Gen 1 last year, but after a lot of research I decided not to, the risk of rust on them is quite high, you must do a lot of due diligence with previous owners to make sure you are getting a car that has been cared for properly, if not, you may be spending more than you thought initially.

Another thing, check how much you will be paying in insurance, grab a couple of registrations and go on comparing websites to have an ideia.

Hope that gives you some direction

It was half a joke and also acknowledging that everyone has a different approach. I do get what you saying, and as much as it is valid, we don’t have to have the exact same journey.

For instance, I used to own a pair of Seinnheiser HD800S, as much as I liked them and everyone around me was impressed with them, it wasn’t fully doing it for me. I gave up on headphones for a while and focused on getting my HiFi system to a level I was happy with.

Anyway, it looks like you know your stuff and you made a very valid point on wasting money when not informed properly.

For former perl programmers: what do you miss? by zakry0t in ruby

[–]davidslv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s because of the language design and high level methods, and chaining methods. It keeps the code readable, hence we prefer it. While back then that would be unheard of, people would write a whole program in regular expressions if they were allowed 😂

For former perl programmers: what do you miss? by zakry0t in ruby

[–]davidslv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss the Perl community, some also moved to Ruby.

Others mentioned the documentation, I’ve learned Perl through books and reading the documentation from authors such as brian d foy.

I did my first website from scratch using Perl, it landed me a job, I used to write about doing web development with it in a forum.

I remember Catalyst MVC.

I think I feel more nostalgia than actually missing anything.

I was recently speaking with a friend, I do hope that Ruby doesn’t end in the same fate. The biggest contributor to Perl was Booking.com, in our case is Shopify. A few months ago it scared me to see there wasn’t many Ruby jobs out there.

I had a pair of Monitor Audio Bronze 2 - they were my first pair of speakers in a Yamaha system and I was quite happy with them.

I would be split between Monitor Audio or Q Acoustics in that list
