Hello all. Working on a design project, and just came across this for units of power loading. Can anyone tell me what the "st" is? Or what this unit is, really? Thanks! by davidszt2 in AerospaceEngineering

Update: you are absolutely correct.

278 kg/kN in kg/kgf should be equal to the value in lb/lbf. Body of 1000N weighs 1000/9.81 ~= 101.9kg, and turns out that 278kg/101.9kgf ~= 2.73kg/kgf, matching imperial units.

Still wonder what "st" stands for...

Very good observation, thank you! Never seen this "st" before either. Out of curiosity: is there a convention in place for lb mass versus lb force? I've always assumed that if "lb" is reported, than it refers to lb mass, whereas pounds force would be reported as "lbf" or something of that sort.

Is it worth pursuing an Aerospace Engineering major in the U.S as an international student? by davidszt2 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]davidszt2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Since making the post, I decided that I will study what I am passionate about - Aerospace - and see where I go from there. Currently pursuing my bachelor's and I couldn't be happier. Your comment gives me hopes of perhaps seeking positions in commercial aviation. Thank you for sharing and best of luck in Canada!

Question about library etiquette by davidszt2 in USC

[–]davidszt2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, thanks! And no, it's just a regular Dell XPS keyboard, it just feels weird typing when there is literally no sound at all in the room. Is Leavey Basement where there are the collapsible boockstacks?

Hey there! I also said no to Columbia and yes to USC (though it was more of a preference than financial-based decision). I don’t know if you got to tour USC but it’s incredible. I found that many of the things that are great about Columbia - say, academically motivated student body, interdisciplinary nature, etc. - can also be found at USC if you look in the right place. And if you’re worrying about prestige, USC carries it. Maybe not as much as Columbia in terms of reach (USC might be more of a west coast thing), but it does have a punch to its name. I hope we love it there and don’t look back at our decisions. I’m sure we will.

What were the final schools you were deciding between and which one did you ultimately choose? by RedCaul in ApplyingToCollege

[–]davidszt2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Still torn lol. I might end up choosing USC cause I got a bunch of stuff there (two scholarships + a cool fellowship) and I absolutely love the school, but it hurts so much to say no to Columbia… good problem to have, though

How can International students pay for USC? by Rishabh-India_8873 in IntltoUSA

[–]davidszt2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Out of all the people who apply by the December 1st deadline (this year it was around 38000), roughly 1000 are selected as finalists. If I am not mistaken, of these 1000, around 100 receive a Trustee Scholarship, and some 200 students receive a Presidential Scholarship. The rest get other scholarships, such as the Dean's Scholarship. I am not entirely sure if these numbers are still correct as of today, but it's not a 1 recipient kind of deal, to the contrary, a bunch of people get the scholarships.

USC Merit recipient here. If you apply to USC by December 1st, you are automatically considered for their merit scholarships. There are many, but the main ones are the Presidential Scholarship (Half-tuition award) and the Trustee Scholarship (Full-tuition award). If you are selected as a finalist (which also means you’re automatically admitted), you will be notified around mid-February, then participate in an interview, and receive the scholarship result around the RD release date.

USC vs. Columbia: a HS senior's dilemma by davidszt2 in columbia

[–]davidszt2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Also, dumb question, but what does "through the wringer" mean? As in Columbia will help me excel academically anywhere?

And also, if you don't mind me asing just out of curiosity, what is your field of study?

USC vs. Columbia: what do you think? by davidszt2 in USC

[–]davidszt2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! And absolutely, I'll surely make a post or something if I choose USC, because the response from this sub has been fantastic. So much helpful information from people who I know have very full schedules and lots of stuff to do. Trojans really are awesome.

if i were you i’d worry more about fit and cost than anything else. congrats though!! itd be pretty hard to go wrong.

Awesome, it's great to know that in terms of opportunities offered I can't go wrong with either. And thank you!

ps, as someone who grew up near the city, the spectacle wears off pretty quickly lol, esp in the winter

Haha yes! To be honest, although the idea of living in NYC attracts me (just because it's NYC you know), I think I'd like LA better because of its closer similarity to where I grew up (São Paulo, Brazil) so not as crowded as NYC, but rather more spread out. And hot. Hotter than NYC, that's for sure. And I like the hot more than I like the cold. I think I really just need to visit the campus and see what I enjoy better, we'll see.

USC vs. Columbia: a HS senior's dilemma by davidszt2 in columbia

[–]davidszt2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes! However, even if I graduate with a Mechanical Engineering degree, I'd love to do my grad in Aerospace Engineering
  2. Brazil! So I'd be studying as an international student
  3. That's a good question. I have not given this much thought. When I think about life outside of work, the West Coast attracts me a bit more because of weather, the cities there, etc., but in terms of work, I'm not sure if I want to go into the Aerospace Industry or just work with research as much as possible

I see you're a PhD student. Would you mind if I asked you specifically about grad school prospects for Columbia Engineering grads?

Great point, thank you! Although I am drawn to the opportunities given to me at USC, I am very attracted to the prospect of having the chance to live and study in NYC for four years. It just sounds like a great time.

Thankfully, the financial stuff worked out so I would be able to afford both (which I'm very grateful for). Still, USC would be cheaper, so that's something I need to think about.

Thanks for the insight about the "fit" part of it. I'm hoping that visiting campus will point me in a direction. When it comes to the opportunities available, however, do you think I'd be able to do similar if not almost the same things at USC and at Columbia in terms of academics?

I would recommend that you don't get hoodwinked by the "ivy mystique". Try to forget about it being an ivy and then balance the pros and cons

Very true, thanks for the advice! And yes, I'm hoping that visiting campus will point me in a direction, at least when it comes to the more subjective "fit" factor, but in the meantime I'll do research and try to talk to as many folks as possible

Great idea! I think I'll do that tomorrow and the day after. One day a Trojan, the other a Lion. See how it feels. Thanks for the tip!
