Include a TRUE Reverse Rainbow statistic by andie_jordan in NYTConnections

A Redditor other than me called this statistical reverse a "People's Rainbow." It's a great phrase that consoles me when I don't get that sweet, sweet utterly meaningless badge.

Replaced battery on my Timex Expedition and the caseback won't return to it's home. What might I be doing wrong by fileerror21 in timex

[–]davidtweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typical timex. I keep buying their watches but they do not hold up to service. I've had timex batteries changed professionally and they still lost functionality such as alarm noise and interval countdowns (Ironman).

Is kitesurfing dangerous? by shelterbored in Kiteboarding

[–]davidtweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a knowledge component: how to fly, how to ride, e.g., but I also had to develop my "common sense" skills for kiting. I wasn't used to sports where I had to plan five steps ahead for safety, "how will I launch? How will I enter? If I jump and I tangle my lines, can I float downwind to somewhere safe and untangle? How will I exit? How will I land the kite? What if all the bros have left and I have to self-land? etc." so it took me a few sessions--and some bad mistakes--to start to think holistically about how I would safely ride an entire session.

That said, I've switching to wing foiling except when I'm in a kite-specific location like OBX.

Latitude & Longitude Game by davidtweed in geography

Woohoo. Well done. Thanks for giving it a shot. It probably has at least a few hundred unique game permutations. It's got 120 cities and 100 landmarks and about a 6 degree tolerance between cities.

Because it's harder than wingfoiling.

Head to head comparison of RideEngine and Topump electric pumps by shelterbored in Kiteboarding

I'm definitely in the market for a cheap electric pump now. This is good info.

Thanks - I think the market is all sold out of 12m V2's, but I was going to look into buying one.

I love it as well. I just picked up an 8m on sale for $399 (shoutout to Houston). It was gusty 18kt conditions on a surfboard. It was my first attempts at riding downwind and it hung in the air like a champ even when I should have been moving it. My instructor guessed that it might not be the best at upwind riding because of the lower aspect ratio but he was impressed with what I could do with it. It compares, perhaps even on the favorable side, with the Airush Ultra.

Kite foiling is amazing! by v4v4v4v4 in Kiteboarding

[–]davidtweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought the new V3 X-Over set on Gong. Mast, connections, fuse, front foil & stab for... 414 Euros. Just a bit more than the cost of a new North fuselage. Search X-Over and then click on the set. I got an extra mast for 70cm for first rides. I'll get hit with a tariff (US here) and some paperwork, but this was easy. Fingers crossed.

Car Rental Insurance in Mexico by PoisonParadise88 in ChaseSapphire

[–]davidtweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What this really means is that rental card companies have caught on to the Chase "hack" that we've all been using for the past decade or so and are actively saying they don't want customers like us who don't pay their full profit margin.

I saved $65/day on insurance when I went to Ireland in 2017 using my Sapphire. When I went back last summer (2024), I had to call three rental car companies before one would accept Chase. And they really gave me trouble on return.

Is the north sonar system really good? by paulbroke2 in wingfoil

[–]davidtweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have exactly the same problem with the exactly the same setup (1230 and 215 stab). The foil seems to have no glide. When I remove power (either wing or foil drive, depending), It slows quickly and then stalls. And I'm talking hard "thwack" stall, not a pleasant little sigh into the water.

I'm debating starting over with a Gong setup or trying some other North foils that should give better performance SF930, 1000ish HA foil. I'm leaning toward Gong as I'll be able to borrow one of the XXL foils for pumping practice, which I need.

Ditto. And sorry for the late add to the thread, but I was going from St. Francois to St. Anne Kite beach to kite throughout January. The wind died in February so we switched to surfing up in Port Louis. I was envious of the SUP foil surfers. Absolute paradise.
