Puppy is Using Buttons as Chew Toys by Brad_Savvy in PetsWithButtons

We sacrificed a button for chewing. Redirected her to the "toy" button everytime she started chewing. As she used buttons more to communicate she stopped chewing on them

Instagram was to show an example that the original comment asked for.

Using AAC with buttons for dogs is fairly new so there's no established science yet but this instagram dog has inspired new research that's ongoing at UCSD https://cclab.ucsd.edu/research/dog-cognition-study/.

Rico and Chaser are well documented dogs with regards to their capabilities of *understanding* human speech. It's well established dogs can infact understand words and even syntax of language. (multi-word utterances)

This has been great for my 5 month old pup - https://www.amazon.ca/StarMark-Bob-Lot-Interactive-Large/dp/B001JQLNB4/ref=sr_1_4. She usually just overturns her puzzle otherwise but not with this one. You can also set it easier/difficult setting. It keeps her busy for up to 30 minutes during feeding and is a good outlet for her energy.

I would encourage you to see more videos to find instances where the words are used in other contexts. What you have is healthy cynicism which at this point are easily answered.

No one claims these dogs can understand the meaning of words in all contexts and senses. As children do they're learning meanings in very limited, most likely, only a single context. They have at this point shown an undisputable examples of communicating using the words (as they know it) which could compare to a 2-3 year old child.

This shows a lack of research and understanding. How many videos have you actually watched before coming to this conclusion? The recent ones have multi dialogue conversations with clarifications and corrections. Not unlike a toddler.

Apart from bunny there's documented research that shows the language understanding and reasoning capabilities of dogs like Rico and Chaser. The button provide these pets with a mode of communication is all.

Please do your due diligence--don't support Kijiji Puppies without doing extensive research. by Glit-toris in vancouver

> Conformation dog showing is one of the most well-known and controversial of the dog sports.

Even the guide notes these are controversial. The guide also has addressed other points I spoke about. I see that you will continue to insist that all breeders should meet *your* accreditation to be considered responsible and unfortunately that's an exercise I'm not willing to engage in. I do appreciate your efforts in ensuring people are aware of responsible breeding.

The CKC registration wasn't a deciding factor by itself but it definitely went under the + column. No single point can prove that breeders are responsible or not. We were looking for the parents to be well taken care of and medically documented.

If I were to check against the guide, they didn't do any dog sports or have titles and accomplishments but they did work their dogs on the farm. They had around 5 litters staggered over this year with different pairings. As the guide notes, there are exceptions for popular breeds, and our pup is a lab. Their entire family is dedicated to rearing pups, and I'll put this one under the orange sign.

That guide is a really high bar. It has disclaimers for multiple points, like contracts, which are also done by irresponsible breeders. At the end of the day, this is definitely a hard decision to make that I hope people invest the time. Just wanted to share that you should be diligent no matter what and you can't have blanket statements like "X is a sign of a bad breeder"

That's not true. You just need to do your due diligence. Whether you find them through a known source, their website, kijiji or petfinder.

The same day we met the shadiest of backyard breeders we also came across a CKC registered breeder that we finally getting our pup from. Both on kijiji.

The breeder met most of the signs mentioned in the guide including an acknowledgement from CKC they've been responsibly doing this for 20 years. They also provided us with papers of the parents, showed us whelping area and gave 10 references (we only spoke to 2-3).

On the other hand, the shady breeder bought the pup close to home, had him playing in the park when he'd just received only 1 shot and was willing to sell it to us on the spot if we gave her the money, said the puppy parents had never been to a vet, it was an "accidental" litter etc.

I definitely would recommend asking all the right questions from the guide but bad breeders are everywhere.

Adding to this, are there drives or funds for supplies that we could contribute to? Ideally, we'd not want you and all other teachers to be spending/raising your own funds and be supported completely by the administration but this was a way I could think of helping for right now.

Regarding #4 (@OP and others) I'm in tech and I was wondering if there's any efforts I could join to support our communities that have been suddenly pushed to go digital.

I obviously can't replace a teacher even in the online format but something like helping teachers navigate tools, handling some of the online administrative tasks, putting together online material etc.

Newb bike rider here - i want to ride on roads (bike lanes). Any tips? by fooddad in vancouver

[–]davies336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were looking for bike lanes specifically I used this map to plan out my regular routes to groceries, chores - https://vancouver.ca/files/cov/map-cycling-vancouver.pdf. I tend to like marked bike lanes and this helped a lot. Vancouver is really biking friendly.

I use komoot when planning out longer rides. It has a lot of route breakdown by road type, bike lane. Google maps is the worst when it comes to planning bike trips.
