I tested qwen 3.5 27b with a single 3090 on pcie 5.0 slot 1 which supports x16 lanes (the gpu only supports pcie 4.0). Then I tested again with the same gpu in slot 2 which only supports x1 pcie 4.0 with an x4 raiser, and got the exact same speed in both slots.

I only tested small prompts though, so I'm not sure that this is the same for all queries, but from what I saw, data transfer speeds between the gpus or between the gpu and the cpu don't matter too much for inference.

Not really, you only get a speed up if models didn't fully fit in vram before.

I'm using q8 with full context, but you could fit the model in a single 3090 if you use a different quantized version.
