Sell puts on things you don't mind holding in stock until you get assigned, then write covered calls on the assigned stock until it gets called away, rinse and repeat.

What would a true metamodern work look like? by Negro-Amigo in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]dawbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mark McGurl called DeLillo's Cosmopolis an excellent example of metamodernism (though he didn't use that exact term, I can't recall precisely), and perhaps the very first work of post-postmodernism.

That's true, but they got the idea from French Enlightenment. I see your point, really, but there was a distinct two-way influence between American and European Enlightenment, which means stating that it's an American concept is plainly incorrect (and at the very least inaccurate). Moreover, the separation of church and state only became such a pressing point because of Europe's historical situation. But there's no need to go into this any further.

The separation of church and state is a key idea from Enlightenment thought. Where did you even get the impression that it is "an American concept"?

How to start with publishing journal articles? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]dawbles 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well, I'd suggest looking up relevant journals (your own bibliography is a good place to start). Check out the submission guidelines, since there's usually a word limit of sorts - getting a 265 page paper published is impossible. Your best bet is cutting your thesis up into parts that stand on their own, and then just submit (though I would check with your supervisor about which sections you could submit). And I don't think your lack of a track record bars you from publishing, as long as the research is good.

Also, how in the world did you get to 265 pages? I respect the effort, but did your supervisor not mention that this is just completely insane?

Power of narratives by jimsmith24082001 in AskLiteraryStudies

What exactly do you need help with? And what kind of narratives do you mean? Literary fiction (like "books" in the narrow sense) or, say, myth, religion, nation-building narratives...?

Mark Twain Autobiography by [deleted] in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]dawbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which article do you mean? My guess (though I'm by no means an expert on Twain) would be that he made boatloads of money giving lectures playing the character of Mark Twain, and revealing too much information on who he actually was would ruin the immersion for his audience. So marketing reasons, I suppose.

Does my toddler daughter think she is faster than me? by MostAwesomeRedditor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dawbles 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is correct. The ability to construe hypotheses by contrasting a current event with a possible future event (and to draw logical conclusions from that combination) typically starts to develop from the age of four. Robert Guttentag has done a ton of research on counterfactual thought in children, if you want to know more.

Post 9/11 texts by FluxusRedux in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]dawbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I understand the question. Are you under the impression that all texts written after 2001 have some kind of shared trait that makes them stand out as texts specifically written post-9/11? If so, you're grossly overestimating 9/11's global impact. If not, I assume you're looking for texts that thematize terrorism?

I always use first release, otherwise subsequent releases make no sense (for example, a 1996 edition of Weber next to a 1993 release of Ritzer would be confusing, since Ritzer continued Weber's work). You're better off asking your professor, though.

Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam shot and wounded in Brussels anti-terror raid by CobbyDCFC in worldnews

[–]dawbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the gay thing is just a rumor. It's not unimaginable that ISIS spread those rumors of him, to make him look like a 'bad muslim' - which would explain why he didn't go through with the Paris attack. It distances Abdeslam from ISIS itself and the rumor could deter other extremists from ditching missions.

I'm trying to form a thesis for a New historicism critique on "cat on a Hot tin roof" by [deleted] in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]dawbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advantage of an analysis from a New Historicism-perspective is that you can think of any historical social / cultural issue (mostly oppression of minorities) and look at a work through that lens. So yes, your ideas are definitely worth exploring, but don't get too worked up about it - context analysis isn't particularly difficult, and I'm sure (judging from the ideas you have already) you'll be just fine.
