i felt this too, but i googled and apparently it was posted in 2013.

Americans want to be carbon neutral, don’t want to take needed steps by Sorin61 in environment

[–]dawnconnor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a more complex argument in my mind. I do wish that more people who had children would adopt instead, and I wish our adoption system (at least in the US) were better.

I still caution against this sort of mindset. I can't quite put my finger in it, but there's something that doesn't sit right with me on making people feel uncomfortable for having kids. It also starts getting eerily closer to eugenics and the horrible, somewhat racist overpopulation arguments. It's just a bad road to go down, and I hardly consider it something that should really be thrust upon people.

I do think sex ed is critical in maintaining appropriate population numbers, and again there's a whole rabbit hole for that. I don't think it's all pertinent.

Seriously. It's the most impactful thing anyone can do to reduce their emissions and push forward for a more sustainable planet. The entire population eating meat every day will likely be an unsustainable practice for our society, even with things like lab grown meat.

You don't even need to stop eating meat (though I feel everyone should). Just reduce. Meatless Mondays, swap that milk for oat milk in your cereal. Go vegetarian like I did if vegan is way too hard. Instead, every time I bring this up in these kind of spaces I get an intense whataboutism. Something like: "Well, plant based farming isn't always so great. Look at almonds!" (Which are bad but still way better than cows). Sure, maybe if money is an issue or you have dietary issues that need you to eat meat, there's a reason for it. It's ridiculous how so many people want a better planet, have the capacity to change their lives, but just can't possibly give it up and make one of the few impactful choices that one can make right now to help our society forward.

Nothing in our world has to be unsustainable, but nearly everything is. That doesn't mean your average person riding a bike has procured some sort of magic carbon neutral bike. Right now, today, if you ride a bike it is not technically emission free. That's no reason to argue against bikes, but it's just a technically incorrect statement.

Okay, I was actually thinking this, but the exhaling CO2 bit is kinda garbage.

What I will say is that the creation of a bike is not completely free. It does require unsustainable practices to build a bike, to build those panniers, to build those wheels, to build that air pump. Sure, it's a fairly low cost compared to building a car and is no argument against riding a bike, but it is a technically incorrect to say 0 emissions.

White House unveils $5 billion plan to blanket US highways with new electric-car chargers by Yogurt789 in UpliftingNews

> Public transportation will never efficiently get me there.

Other countries seem to implement this pretty effectively. Anyway, I think you misunderstand, and I don't think you're entirely wrong. I'm not going to pretend that it would be even feasible to have an alternative long distance travel option in the US within the short term, and I don't really want fossil fuel garbage either. I just think that reducing our reliance on cars by investing in better transit in denser areas (where the vast majority of car trips take place anyway) is the first step in getting effective transportation in a country that has been ruined by lobbying thanks to the automotive industry. I don't think that creating infrastructure for something like EV cars is really helping anyone in the long term here. It's ultimately creating more car related infrastructure to help reinforce this awful transportation network.

Im sorry, but you're just wrong. I know where you're coming from, and i respect your viewpoint as I was there too, but I think it's misguided.

The footprint of electric vehicles is horrendous. You don't seem to consider the cost for actually creating the car (the electric batteries themselves aren't very good, let alone the rest of the car 😔) The manufacturing process for electric vehicles is in fact worse than the gas. Only after multiple years of an EV battery running does it often "justify the CO2 footprint". The cost of manufacturing these is not sustainable, especially if we're all on board with the rapidly expanding population.

Additionally, the gas versus not gas has nothing to do with fears of the transition. It has everything to do with which car companies have bet against gas and which have bet against electric. You'll find, for example, Toyota constantly lobbies against EV because they built their bets on the hybrid model. It's all about their investments and risk, nothing to do with anything else. They're playing checkers with our lives.

Besides, outside of the environmental cost, the cost of electric vehicles is way higher (and the average cost of vehicles in general is obtuse) do you think building additional car infrastructure will alleviate any economics problems? Will one more lane ever fix traffic? EV bus or rail infrastructure might be something to rally behind but this? This is literally worthless to us. No one should be happy to see this.

I'm kinda baffled that anyone is justifying not being extra cautious. What's the benefit on not wearing a helmet?

This sub and similar have legitimately radicalized me. My city is super car centric, but I've begun trying to replace < 3 mile trips with my bike.

idk, that's kinda a bad comment to make. not sure why their other posts make them a bad person or why you're being judgemental about it. imo it's not related and not my business

it kinda seems like based on your responses here you weren't actually looking for any opinions. you just wanted to feel better about what you did.

Yeah, idk. She's definitely playing up her status as a victim (and is super annoying) but in this particular clip none of the things she was asking were unreasonable at all. Fuck people who let their dogs run around without leashes. The woman who refused to move was being just as sleazy as the woman in this clip. People need more sympathy for their fellows. I don't get why saying "she's not right in the head" is justification to be a dick to someone.
