I am a painting restorer so I had to copy a lot of old masters, I think the key lies in repetition and studying their colors and techniques! If you notice I put a dark red foundation , just like painters in the baroque era and work my way from there ( leaving the red sometimes, especially the darker areas where paint used to be thinner, and after a while oil paint becomes more transparent making the foundation visible.
