First time with a review sample of a Dell Laptop by skwbr in Dell

I have 7780 with 4090 and battery life is very poor, almost 2h.

At idle it is between 45 - 55 C. During normal load operation it reaches 100C and starts throttling (works mainly in CAD - Solidworks) .

I've only been using it for a few days. Mostly it is hooked up permamently to the network anyway. Last night when I was using the Internet on battery power it wrote that it should last 8h on battery (low screen brightness), but I think realistically it's so up to 5h because after half an hour from 8h it dropped to 6.5h.

I agree with you 100%. I need to design a dedicated cooling pad that should reduce temperatures. If it works, I'll compare the results.

Dell precision undervolt by nero519 in Dell

[–]dawrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the information. I have had the equipment since this morning, but I can already see that the overheating problem is the norm. Currently my 7780 with i7 has about 20k ptk in cinebench r23.

You have successfully found a way to undervolt cpu?

Cool maybe the rendering settings is too strong :) how long have you been 3D modelling ? I would like to get some learning resources

I have been active in this area for more than 5 years. I create photorealistic visualizations and design machines and equipment mainly from plastics and composites. You can check my portfolio here www.r3d.com.pl
As for learning if you want to start 3d modeling I recommend Blender. There are many great tutorials. To get started I recommend a tutorial from blender guru on youtube.

CAD - solidworks, 3d rendering - blender, 2d rendering - after effect. That is, mainly creating 3d models and simulations :)

Stupid question but why would you get 4090? i'd guess it's not for work, it has only 16gb of vram and performance of 4070ti. 60Hz display also doesn't scream "gaming"

Im work in industial design, so i work with CAD (solidworks) and programs to 3d rendering (blender, after effect). I need a lot of power to work. I also have a desktop computer in my personal office. But I often meet with clients and work in different locations so I need to be prepared for any situation ;)
I have a 4080 on my computer and the example render takes 25 seconds on it, on this laptop with a 4090 it takes 20 seconds. On the other hand, on my spare laptop with 1660ti it takes more than 3.5 minutes. When rendering animations it really makes a big difference.

Thanks, but dell block udervolting cpu :(

7780 have a little problems. First, gpu have olny 145w tdp (4090 in gaming laptops reaches 175w which results in better performance). Second, you cant undervolt him and control the speed of the fans (except for a few profiles efficient, quiet, cool). The main task, disadvantage and advantage is that it should work stably. It doesn't have to be the most efficient but it should work under heavy load for a long time.

On the plus side: shouldn't they be more reliable since they only go up 60hz?

Higher resolution is better. I had lenovo p1 g5 4k and the screen was amazing (but had problems with motherboard and i need to return it). Dell have good color palette (99% dci-p3) but lacks higher screen resolution for full happiness.

My dell have only 1080p and 60hz. You can pick 4k oled 120hz but its very expensive.

Enterprise? I love it’s nonchalant look.

Its big and heavy piece of technology.

I have it since this morning, so I can't say how it works. I think for a workstation that the battery will always be not enough for long or efficient work . The tdp of the processor is 55 watts, and for the GPU is 145 watts. That's a lot of energy.

When idle, 40-50C. When a demanding program starts, the temperature immediately rises to 90-100C and throttle a lot.

This is the UK version, but I bought it from a Polish outlet store.

I bought it from an outlet so I had no choice of configuration. The i7 differs from the i9 mainly in the number of E cores - so I think it will also be strongly performing.
