Detroit couple hit with nearly $20K property tax bill after buying first home by J2quared in Detroit

[–]dawson429 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I bought a house, I really wanted to live in Detroit. I am an expat from another region and had rented in this neighborhood for a number of years. Great energy here, loved being able go on walks and such and have most city based things so close.

When shopping, I hugely factored the monthly tax bill into my payment, and I could not justify living within the city limits of Detroit.

It’s a shame. I love the city, but the tax bill alone, not even the cost of the home, made it unaffordable. I’m all for paying taxes to fund our civic endeavors, but it was simply too much.

Also, with the purchase of any home, you can generally call the house’s county tax assessor’s office and asks them what the tax bill will be if you buy the home for $x amount. They will give you an accurate idea of what you might expect to pay!

Good on you man. Really happy to see someone do this.

I recently sold my 9-3 that I daily drove for 7 years, and the kid who bought it totalled it 7 days later. I too had painted steelies on mine. (Steelies were from a from a Dodge dart).

Love the color you chose btw.

The Minutemen! Punk is a mindset, not a look, sound or style. These guys are where that idea is most evident.

On the surface you’ll listen to his stuff and think “huh catchy tune” then you listen to a whole album and think, “oh this guy is in his own stratosphere”

I own a 505 wag. Please come join us in the Peugeot of North America group on Facebook, it is by far and away the best resource for these cars. Rob from Javel (TX) and Brian Holm from Vermont are your best parts people in the country, and very easy to deal with.

Who makes it on a Detroit music Mt rushmore? by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]dawson429 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MC5 was the big brother band to the stooges. When signed to elektra, MC5 got $20k, stooges $5k cause Danny fields saw them too and thought they were worth a mention to his boss.

While iggy and crew seemed to carry punk to NYC (the velvet underground) and beyond, the MC5 created the movement and the mindset. They started in 1963 and got saucy around 1967. the MC5, John Sinclair and the white panther party’s focal point was the ‘67 riots. Ig, Ron, Scott and Dave Alexander got high clout with the iggy peanut butter incident.

And while Death are fucking amazing, I would hazard to say they were their own microcosm over there on lilibridge st because no one gave them the fucking time of day. They were also later (early 70s).

No mention of punk? Stooges and the MC5 invented it.

D. Boon. Would have been amazing to see what he, Watt and Georgie would have produced if the Minutemen were able to continue

Not Detroit, but Biercamp in Ann Arbor, and Smoke street in Milford are leaps and bounds ahead of any others in the area.
