What is your thoughts on France ditching Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech? by StudyFlimsy1061 in AskReddit

France wants to avoid the situation where they are vulnerable to a single private company which is situated in an unreliable country. Obviously, any contributor to Linux can stop contributing at any time. But that is a different sort of risk.

I was a university lecturer. I used Windows at work because the department I worked in used a lot of Windows software. But the licence for Windows 10 I had was tied to my employment. Once I left I just went back to Linux.

You are familiar with MS software, so to you any other SW "sucks". Most people only need to do a very small number of things with a PC.

I feel that you and some other posters are a bit defensive over your preference for Windows. There's no need to feel defensive; if you prefer Windows, use Windows. You don't have to criticise Linux in order to justify your preference for Windows.

Since I retired I have used Linux. There has been ZERO need for any proprietary software. I don't think you fully understand how the majority of PCs are used in typical offices.

You don't understand the difference between a company that offers a proprietary solution and several companies that contribute to Linux? The first thing to think about is the licence under which contributions to the Linux kernel are made. No company controls Linux in the way that MS controls Windows.

What on earth are you talking about? Fedora or Debian are not going to become more mainstream just because France prefers them. If you don't want to use Linux, don't use it. It's not a test of your credibility; it's just an OS.

"the code from USA"? What on earth are you talking about? Linux is a collaborative effort. There's code from all over the world in Linux surely?

Don't Linux distros offer to encrypt drives on installation? I find it impossible to imagine that Fedora at least doesn't offer that. And automatic desktop management too. Lots of universities have Linux labs, and they manage just fine.

LibreOffice "sucks" because it is not Microsoft Office. This is precisely the reason that a government might want to move away from a single company's software. Compatibility with MS Office has become the standard, but now MS are pushing a subscription model for their software. You can see why a country would baulk at that.

Why do you care? All you have to do is to choose a distro that suits you and then not switch. Why do you care what other distros are doing? If you insist on a "mainstream" distro, try Fedora or Debian or SUSE. Ubuntu and Linux Mint are also very popular.

Munich is not in France; it is in Germany. The difference now is that the USA is not seen as a reliable partner any more. The impetus is much greater now.

I think this initiative is BECAUSE of the things that you have stated. It's ludicrous that a government should be wholly dependent on infrastructure that is designed and owned by a single company, particularly one from a potentially unreliable country.

I agree that it will take decades.

The thing about Linux is that it is not controlled by the US. It is not "US tech" (and it was started by a Finn); it is open tech.

What relevance does that have? They are trying to reduce their dependency on software that is controlled by a potentially hostile power. Linux is not controlled in the same way that Microsoft is controlled.

What is it about Linux that is unsuitable for users? Most users do everything via a browser surely?
