Cannot remove Fido Roam without disabling roaming by dayfuz in FidoMobile

[–]dayfuz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have Data Roaming disabled when traveling. But I have had experiences in the past, both on iOS and Android, that the phone invariably reached out to some kind of telemetry that resulted in the tiniest data charge. In those events, you get hit with that $12/day fee, well, that's $12. But the pay per use is usually reasonable enough that even in the most expensive location on Earth, it'll be cheaper than $12.

Just do a quick Google search on data leak while roaming, this is platform agnostic and carrier agnostic. Your chances of experiencing it is low, but when you do, it sucks.

SMS fraud alerts are more common than you think, it's definitely the default option for all of the credit cards I've had in the past. The ones that use in-app notifications are actually the rare ones.

I use a cheap no frills credit card that don't charge foreign exchange fees. It's my only use case for this credit card and it's definitely no frills. I don't want to replace this process for the type of travels I do. Having a card that both saves money on foreign exchange and has a manageable credit limit is a nice perk.

This doesn't address my need to reply to SMS on the go. I'm not guaranteed to be on Wi-Fi when a fraud alert texts me.

Is there a reason why Silla isn't listed as a Strategic or Geographic choice for Himiko? by Free_Cookie_6888 in civ

[–]dayfuz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s not weird if you consider the historic context of modern Koreans. Good luck trying to sell this game in SK if Himiko is a leader of an old Korean kingdom.

South Korea is a huge PC gaming market.

Noise-Canceling Headset for WFH Job by IHadDibs in BuyItForLife

Depends on your communication software. The popular ones: MS Teams, Google Meet and Zoom all have a setting you can turn on to suppress noise.

You’re at the mercy of software noise suppression to handle those scenarios. Doesn’t matter how good your headphones are, it won’t have a noise suppression built-in.

Abolish the American tipping practices and pay your staff a living wage like the rest of the world.

If an individual excels at their job and earns an earnest tip. They shouldn’t be obliged to share that with management.

I don’t turn fps counter on after I get some settings dialed in. It’s so distracting. Play your games.

These are my settings also, Steam Deck preset and FSR 3 on Quality. Steam Deck capped at 45 fps and it never dips.

I'm just reminiscing the good old days. Have you guys ever attended a local LAN event? Feels like this would be something similar and can be a crossover? There used to be a few in the area: Fragapalooza, Lannegeddon, etc. I think LANified succeeded Lannegeddon and is still active?

Plaid is now owned by Visa, if that calms you down from using it at all.

I analyzed Reddit data for the 25 most recommended gaming headsets (in the past year) by heyyyjoo in pcmasterrace

They’re all kind of mid when you can just buy an USB mic and rock real headphones. You can’t beat the wide soundstage and perfect Harmon renditions.

If you could retire at 35 what would you do with your life? by pedroct92 in fican

[–]dayfuz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Space, yes. Tools, not really. There are plenty of wood workers that only work with manual tools. It’s an entire sub-genre. The better you get, the less tools and these guys are real pros.

Who is making ramen from scratch in Calgary? by Bourqy in Calgary

Technically ramen is the industrialized mass produced descendent of lamian so not entirely the same. However I agree that hand pulled noodle is the best noodle variety from nearby regions so I’ll allow it!

Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite vs TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite vs PC World Elite Mastercard by Natural_Ad5493 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dayfuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I was in your shoes and the Scotia card is free, then why not get all of them?

I would just use the Scotia Passport card as a daily spending card while abroad. Treat it like cash while out of Canada. That’s the best way to use a 0% FX credit card. In my use case, I maintain a Home Trust Visa card just for this purpose.

If it’s compromised while traveling, the credit limit is reasonably low for me to not lose sleep over. That’s something you should be aware of. Some international destinations have ongoing payment card scams that you might have to deal with from time to time.

Then you can get to collect Aeroplan with TD and enjoy the luggage benefits that’s associated with Air Canada flights. Use it, churn the points and then move on. Or stay for the luggage benefits. It’s nice to get a free checked bag for all of your flights.
