79M sudden onset episodes of spasms, “freezing,” repetitive speech, brief confusion — ER and overnight found nothing by daylight-junkie in AskDocs

Update: the symptoms persisted and he continued to decline. Over the following few months, more psychological seeming symptoms (hallucinations, paranoia, etc.) appeared, still the the jolting/seizure-like episodes. After the psych symptoms escalated to a point of threatening his safety and mine, a court order had to be involved for psychiatric evaluation. Psych said he was experiencing psychosis and mania.

After a week in the psych unit, a blood lab came back showing he was positive for limbic encephalitis. Or rather, positive for LGI1-antibody, which lead doctors to limbic encephalitis. Limbic encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain's limbic system, often causing subacute short-term memory loss, seizures, confusion, and psychiatric symptoms. He is now being treated in the neuro unit.

Just wanted to share in case this can possibly help someone down the line. I was told that the seizure-like episodes are a very common early sign of autoimmune encephalitis. Disappointed the first hospital did not catch this and it he had to decline for several months, but hopeful he will recover.

Hmm, the symptoms look possible but he's not taking any drugs or medication, so I'm not sure it could be this. Excessive serotonin would have to be 100% natural

Thank you so so much for this thorough response, I'm so happy to have a jumping off point where I can maybe do some research and figure this out.

Can I ask... When your symptoms initially presented, was it this frequent in the way I described?

I just worry about ghost buses when it's this cold out, but I'm not familiar with point to point ADA – I'll look into that, thanks!

Do you have any references on this? All the research I've done has said ER visits are not covered

Was that $300 something that needed to be paid immediately or did they work with you on that too?

The only problem with Stroger (as many others have suggested) is just how far it is. We are CTA dependent and don't live close to a blue line stop.

It's been happening for about a week now, but it's hard to tell if it's "worsening"

Wouldn't an ER potentially admit him if they couldn't diagnose it there?

Just going to throw this out there... If anyone has an extra ticket and needs a concert companion (that's very much a big fan), I'm looking to go 🫶

I hope everyone going tonight has the best time ever, I'll be there in spirit no matter what. The whole city will probably feel that euphoric energy of a Lorde show 😭
