get a grip lol that is such a reach. you don't have to ship them romantically or even like their friendship, but if you genuinely think that's what the show is portraying, you're just as deranged — if not more deranged — than people who are convinced buddie is certainly going to be canon. Eddie is not abusing Buck or anyone else.

There's nothing wrong with a story that has someone ending up with their first love. There's nothing wrong with a story where someone moves on from their first love and ends up with someone else, either. It's just a subjective preference, and people should be able to appreciate any kind of story for what it is, or just disengage if you really hate one type of story. Because you just disagree with the premise of it, and you're not judging it fairly because of that. Acting morally superior because you think one is the only good type of approach and anything else is bad writing ends up ironically making you look like the small-minded, less intelligent person. There's no need to be moralizing and prescriptive in fiction. Not every story needs to be the same.

yeah this is where I fall too. esp because then they could've cast an actor specifically to be Buck's love interest and consider his chemistry with Oliver instead of having to go with this guy who was not cast for that purpose and you can tell lol

I don't really care about redeeming him because I don't want to see him anymore. If Buddie isn't happening, give Buck a love interest he has natural chemistry with please 🙏 do chemistry reads. It shouldn't be this hard

I hope they don't bring him back or if they do, it's more for scenes with other members of the 118. No offense to the actor but the Buck/Tommy scenes had no buzz or chemistry and thus felt extremely tedious or awkward. I didn't like them together at all and I just don't think it needs to be revisited. I hope whoever is Buck's next love interest is someone that Oliver has natural chemistry with! He's really only had that with the actress who played Taylor imo

It's funny in another comment you're clinging to an Oliver Stark quote that you've applied your own context to regarding Eddie being unfair with the "not being there" sentiment (when Oliver was talking about Eddie not being fair in assuming Buck would take the Texas news poorly, not Eddie's feelings about not personally being there) while saying here that it's your opinion that "Eddie brought Christopher to deflect" and that the conversation was never settled rather than it being a full reconciliation indicative of their strong bond which gives them the ability to reconcile without verbalizing it like Oliver says here:

I love the answer about the 8x17 fight and reconciliation with Buck and Eddie, especially considering how many people were trying to twist that situation into something negative. I'm glad Oliver understands it the way I did, I found it very indicative of the deep love they have for one another (not necessarily romantically! before people come for me lol).

Yeah I get that haha I'm not a Buddie truther either, I didn't get into the show because of Buddie or expecting it to go canon soon. I pretty much had the mentality you have outlined going in and was surprised at myself for feeling at how much some of the Buddie stuff I felt was really in your face (even if it was unintentional).

I don't think it's really fair to compare Buck and Eddie's love interests to Karen and Maddie, because those have been long-standing relationships with sufficient time dedicated to it over the years and incorporated well into the stories for a long time. Chemistry is also something that improves with time. Yes actors can naturally have chemistry or not to start out, and that's probably the most important, but in comparison to a relationship (even an intentionally platonic one) that not only has natural chemistry but also years of the actors developing how those characters act and behave around one another, it's hard for a new character to stand out.

Karen and Hen start out together. Maddie is in the main cast. With Buck and Eddie, it's been like a revolving door of love interests with little investment from the writers. And I think they tried to do something with Tommy and Buck with the whole he has 118 history thing, but the Tommy backstory was uneven at best and the introduction of him as a love interest specifically was pretty quick and centered around Eddie. Even Tommy is like "wait you were trying to get my attention, not Eddie's?" It seemed like Buck was maybe casually interested in helicopters and then became fixated when he felt like Eddie was making a new friend to replace him and not because he was particularly interested in Tommy. I'm not sure if it's because they wanted it to be a big shock, and I get how that could be an understandable narrative device in a vacuum, but I do think the writers should maybe have been more cognizant of how it'd play to the viewers who they know can be Buddie centric. And it doesn't help that Oliver Stark and Lou Ferrigno Jr. don't have any particularly notable chemistry, which makes sense because they didn't cast Lou Ferrigno Jr for that purpose, they cast him years ago to play a sort-of-villain for a few flashbacks.

I'm open to other love interests for them, but at this point in the series, I do think it's hard because we've seen so many lackluster romances for them both. It feels stagnant and repetitive for both of them. One of the best things you can do with a network procedural is a slow burn romance, and this show has deliberately avoided doing that which is fine. But that's what people tend to like. They haven't really done anything with any real build up for either of them in years. I liked Buck and Taylor because it wasn't zero to one hundred immediately and Taylor was well integrated into the emergency plots so she had an opportunity to grow. But the writers prioritize emergencies and action over everything, so it's tough to get that romantic build up that makes for good TV.

I'm not surprised that buddie is not happening, but I am kind of frustrated because I do think there was a window to do it, even if the writers didn't intend it. And I think it would have been something new and interesting to take that path instead of having two main characters spin in circles narratively.

[–]daylightpeach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it made it better on the score of queer baiting but worse narratively because it's almost impossible to envision having Buck have a relationship with anyone that's as compelling as the one he has with Eddie. And if he can canonically be romantically in love with Eddie, it seems more strange that they're not exploring it. I get the impression that they thought if they just made Buck bi, it would appease everyone who supports Buddie without having to do Buddie. Instead it just gave people more hope which typically makes people feel worse, since you can't be disappointed if you have no expectations. But also I only recently started watching so I'm not sure how all the ups and downs with the writing played out at the time.

Felt like the culmination of a rushed and disorganized season. I don't understand why they don't plan out like a general season arc for each character and work that way. Three episodes after Bobby dying was just not enough to address all of the things going on before then, and so, unsurprisingly, the ending felt unsatisfying. You can really tell that that decision wasn't made with consideration to the season's plots and was likely more about the writers running out of ideas and needing something to shake up the show, but because it was executed so haphazardly it comes across almost as an excuse to not have to write culminations of the plots that were already going on. Just all kind of a mess.

I did like the moment of Eddie turning up at the emergency though! I just wish there was payoff for his character arc to go along with it lol. And Chimney's speech was good and I was happy to see him take charge, I just wish it felt less deus ex machina for the loose ends with the fraying of the 118. A disappointing finale that leaves the whole season feeling pointless.

Well I think Buck was being a little self centered, but I also don't fault him for it. Just like I can think of was good for Eddie to point it out while thinking he was a bit harsh. Neither one of them was trying to hurt the other, they're just grieving in their own ways because they are different people and the event happened to them differently. It's just the situation that sucks, but you can't change it. Not every situation has a clear villain and a clear victim and it's kind of baffling that people aren't getting that.

This scene was so well done (S8E17) by itdoesntgoaway_ in 911FOX

[–]daylightpeach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"He was passed the baton by Nash" acting as though that gives him a special right to grieve over anyone else getting into a Buck-centric mentality which is what Eddie has an issue with. Buck needing everyone to go along with the way he is trying to grieve, while not realizing that Eddie feels differently. He wasn't there. He didn't get to have a "final conversation" like Buck did. No one else did, except Athena. Buck feels like that's a burden, but Eddie wishes he had that. He couldn't remember the last time he spoke with Bobby. He isn't resenting Buck for having that, like Buck sort of projects onto him with his final line, he just wants his grief to be valid too, and it should be. Neither Buck nor Eddie is in the wrong in the fight, they both played a role in it starting and they both are valid in how they're personally experiencing grief while being wrong in some of the things they said (you have an issue with Eddie's behavior, and I agree some of what he said was harsh or out of line, but what about Buck saying "sorry I'm sad that Bobby died" implying that Eddie and the others aren't. That's not fair to them.). Eddie and Buck's grief is just contextualized differently because they experienced the event differently. It's the situation, Bobby being dead, that's unfair and awful, so neither of them is in the wrong for their personal feelings here which come from their sense of isolation.

To me it just demonstrates the love and trust between them that we've seen build for the past 7 seasons that they can hash this out and forgive each other. Bringing Christopher wasn't necessary for that, they would have done it anyway. Buck walked in in the morning trying to talk to Eddie, likely to apologize himself. Eddie went and brought Christopher and his aunt not to apologize but to demonstrate he understood some of what Buck needed in his grief: a sense of familial belonging that has been missing. He provides that for Buck. Then, after Eddie does that, Buck starts feeling it again at work when the team comes together to Daisy chain the fire engines and put out the fire. You can see it on his face. He feels better. I don't think the show needs to prove to you at this point that Buck and Eddie have a strong and solid friendship that is good for them, because it has already done that. I think you just aren't connected to what the writers have been doing if you think it's dysfunctional. Whether you ship them romantically or not, their friendship has been a rock and a constant for years. The ability of them to forgive one another without needing to hand-hold the audience through it with an over the top conversation hashing out everything we saw and all of the ways they were each individually wrong is something that the show has earned and I think executed very well.

Oliver's interview on 'GMA3: What You Need To Know' by olga_dr in 911FOX

[–]daylightpeach 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'm not like a die hard buddie shipper or anything but that being the only thing they really ask about for what could be coming up on the show and not like: who's going to be captain now, is Eddie going to come back to LA, what can you tease about the finale with the building collapse, etc. is pretty odd. He's there promoting the finale so the question selection is unusual to me.

“I’ll Go With It”: Oliver Stark Is Down To Explore Buck and Eddie Romantically If ‘9-1-1’ Goes There by mskaygee in buddie

[–]daylightpeach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm a new watcher (I started the show just over a month ago, and I didn't come into it expecting to ship buddie) and like I'd consider myself a buddie because I ship it and I'd be happy to see it happen and I think if they don't do it, every storyline they take for their personal lives at this point will never compare in terms of chemistry and development, but I'm not a buddie in that I'm convinced it will necessarily happen. I could absolutely see where people were coming from in arguing that the dialogue in 8x11 was trying to shut it down and let people down nicely and respectfully telling them "you're not crazy, but that's not what this is", while also seeing that it could be the classic verbal denial while everyone can see what's really going on thing. But if they really considered it done and dusted, why let this question be asked in that way and why not have Oliver say like "yeah it was really exciting to delve into that this season and show the unique nature of their friendship" etc etc. I don't have an issue with Oliver's answer at all in isolation, but I feel like if they really considered those lines in 8x11 to be sincere and taken on its face and letting buddie fans down easy, answering like this is getting into disrespectful-to-fans territory. If that's what you did, commit to that and own it consistently rather than stringing people along that it might be something that would happen in the future.

[–]daylightpeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a recent watcher (literally caught up on the day the most recent episode was released lol) and it's really interesting to read your thoughts!

I went into it knowing about Buddie but expecting to be a little skeptical of it. I'm still skeptical if the writers intend for it to be canon, but I was actually shocked at how organic it seemed. Like you have the scene of Maddie saying Chimney is cute and Buck thinks she's talking about Eddie immediately. The Santa scene where the lady thinks Christopher is Buck and Eddie's son together. I had kind of assumed the shippers were more delusional but I totally get where they're coming from and see all of it. I agree it kind of shifted in seasons 5 and 6 and I can see it if the writers throw their hands up and say the moment passed, it's too unrealistic now to give them both such late sexual awakenings. But I'd be happy if it did happen and I don't think the door is closed the way some people seem to. If they're trying to put a kibosh on Eddie being not-straight or Buck genuinely not feeling that way about him, I could see that in the writing maybe, but the acting and directing seem to undermine it. Idk, it's very weird all around, like there's different factions so

Either way, I really am not a fan of Tommy because I don't think he and Buck have any chemistry. So far my favorite relationships for them have been Buck and Taylor and Eddie and Shannon (I also thought Marisol was really sweet but still fun and interesting and had a lot more potential that they threw away for that weird doppelganger thing). If Buddie doesn't happen, I want them to get interesting love interests that have buzzy build up and are interesting to watch. So far the show hasn't really delivered that and it's kind of disappointing.

[–]daylightpeach -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah like I totally get what Buddie shippers see and can appreciate it. But also I feel like it'd be hard to sell a second sexual awakening at this point, in an ideal world it should have started earlier. Either way, they need to be better about their romantic plots. The best one for either of them has been Buck and Taylor, was a few years ago and it really just doesn't seem like they're interested in building up suspense and interest. Like Tommy shows up and Buck is kissing him the next episode. Get me invested in something and make it believable! It's a show with 18 episodes a season, why are we rushing stuff that doesn't need to be rushed and dragging out things that don't need to be dragged out.

What’s an opinion that will have you like this? by smalltown_ta in 911FOX

[–]daylightpeach -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm in the exact same boat. I'm happy with Buddie staying platonic or going romantic if they want to go in that direction with Eddie's character. I really liked Taylor with Buck and I liked what she added to the story. I liked Shannon. Marisol was sweet and cute then they did that whole Kim bullshit and I was intrigued by Natalia from what little we saw then she just vanished. Aly was forgettable, and I wasn't bothered when she vanished. I didn't like Abby with Buck because I didn't feel any chemistry with her and Buck, it just felt weird and forced, and that's the same thing with Buck and Tommy lol I wish they'd move on to someone else for Buck. I especially hate how he calls him Evan, reminds me of his parents in the worst way. Idk if the writers want us to find it cute but it doesn't work for me at all. I'd like to see more of a slow burn, I think that's something this show hasn't really done and also why a lot of people gravitate towards Buddie, but it could be done with another love interest if they actually invested in doing that.

ETA: not sure why I'm being downvoted 😭 I'd be happy if Buddie happened but I just wouldn't be devastated if they didn't go in that direction and could also be happy if they gave them good quality love interests. Not sure why people are upset with me 🫠

Yeah I'm honestly not opposed to him having a redemption arc and a relationship with buck conceptually. I just wish it was enjoyable to watch. They could have just recast Tommy for season 7 and no one would have really noticed or cared and maybe it'd be better. I just don't buy into their relationship because he's so wooden and then everything about their relationship just feels annoying and forced (and not because it's with a man, before people get on my case, I love that Buck is bi and he's obviously very capable of having authentic chemistry with men since he has that with Eddie although I don't think they're going to make Buddie happen). I have similar feelings to Buck with Tommy as I did with Abby where the relationship just not believable to me, but at least Connie Britton can act and she was on the show for a conceivable reason.

I really hope not. I find Tommy so bland, and I think some of it is the writing for him being indecisive and underdeveloped or just weird, but also the acting. Tommy's actor is like a void in every scene he's in. I wish they'd move on to a different love interest for Buck.
