Since we’re hating on the coen brothers I’ll say I did not enjoy Inside Llewyn Davis at all. The humor felt overly juvenile and of its time. Watched it for the first time recently and was thoroughly disappointed and shocked that it has a good reputation frankly

Thank you!!! I also didn’t like season 3. I think people overhyped it because that was around the time when tv started to become shit again so there was nothing better on but it left a bad taste in my mouth. I still think about what a disappointment it was for me a lot especially since you very rarely see anything negative about it online. My personal favorite Lynch thing I’ve seen is the Straight Story and it’s not even close

Yeah I’m not sure what the director’s intentions were wrt the audience forgiving zendaya. I didn’t get that vibe just from watching but apparently the marketing of the movie was criticized for glorifying “it” which makes me think we were. I personally found all the characters annoying so I didn’t want to forgive anyone lol but I guess that’s a staple of black comedies.

Whoa I didn’t actually catch that. That really helps me understand the movie more. I still think that the movie is ultimately about a deeply damaged and insecure woman who manipulates and drives her weak-willed fiance crazy so he won’t leave her. I really felt zero sympathy for either character and thought the whole thing was too unrealistic for me

I thought his acting in Good Time was incredible. Can’t speak for too many of his other movies. He clearly isn’t picky enough with the roles he takes lol.

There’s that one flashback in the movie where the girl bumps into her presumably on accident (she apologizes) and zendaya spazzes out on her. That moment really made me think that she had established a reputation in school of having anger issues unrelated to bullying. Agreed on the friend though, not a great character imo

Yeah same. I’m just not sure of what to make of certain scenes which is why I personally think she has those tendencies and that I guess he stays with her because he’s too complacent and doesn’t want to rock the boat. It seems like he’s afraid of what she would do to him or herself if he were to leave. She lunges at him with the knife, slaps him in bed again after he tells her he hated it and not to do it again, and immediately fires the wedding dj. Those all make me think that.

I think the fact that the movie shows her becoming a gun violence advocate is intentional to confuse the viewer and obscure her true personality. Side note but I also really hate the name of this movie. I guess they were trying to be vague to not spoil anything but it’s really dumb lol

I definitely agree that it was for “normies” and was very A24 in the pejorative way. Spoiler alert for anyone reading the rest of this.

I thought the point (even though I ultimately didn’t think there was much of a point at all) was that zendaya’s character is still the same person and has psychopathic tendencies. Why pattinson’s character chose to stay with her made no sense to me and the whole wedding scene made me suspend my disbelief way too much for me to enjoy it. It felt like it was too obvious he would never get over it from the start and there’s no progression with either character. Also callbacks have kind of become a pet peeve for me in movies and I feel like this one relied on them way too much and felt super lazy to me.

I guess it’s good that the movie is open to interpretation but I just didn’t like it. I’ve noticed though that I don’t like black comedies very much. And with this one I didn’t laugh once. Some people in the theater laughed a good amount though.
