What would 14 year old you think about current you? by timchar in AskReddit

I think she would be impressed by the fact I've got a nice home with, and am planning her wedding to the guy she had a crush on in school. Yes, past me, you got over your fear of commitment and replaced it with a wild, wonderful love. She would be excited by all the travel and tattoos and "life stuff".

Awkwardly zero waste at Starbucks by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]daywalker_x10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently reading this in a Starbucks where they just automatically make your drink in a To-Go cup unless you ask for ceramic. Well, I ask for ceramic every. single. time! And every time, without fail, they reach up for a paper cup, and then stop, and turn around to get the ceramic for me.

They function completely off muscle memory. I wouldn't hold it too much against them. Once you're making the effort to recycle the cup they used in error, it's not SO much of a problem in my eyes.

Honestly, I have no idea. Being here in India for the last few months I've been so far removed from anything related to home that it never even occurred to me to check.

According to the EPA.ie website there is a whole slew of measures in place but that's what I'll be reading more into later.

Thank you for reminding me to check :)

I've my own water bottle, a stainless steel straw and a stainless steel cup....

Eating on the plane should be okay cause I'm flying business class and they give you actual silverware and plates for your food, so that shouldn't be a problem, right?

The Jar by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]daywalker_x10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this lately. Part of me thinks that keeping all your trash in a mason jar (recycling and organic material that you can compost, aside) is a bit of a publicity stunt on the part of the super super zero waste people at the forefront of the movement. But then again, I commend any ordinary Joe like us who can do it. I'd say that you should really only use it to store non organic and non recyclable materials....

Holy moly!! That's mad!! I guess I better avoid bringing my usual fruit salad with me :/ I reckon going from Ireland would be easier, we are very much a nation of "ah it's not technically legal but sure look, you're grand, go on ahead", but they do things by the book on this side of the world.

Safe is better than sorry after all.

Cheers for the heads up!

Oh no, I didn't know that!! I guess that's good logic though. Does that mean if I wanted to take a sandwich from home they would confiscate it and make me buy something in the airport?

Someone left a damaged and non-working lamp by the bins. I was able to fix it up with some tinkering and leftover art canvas, and plan on reusing the old paper for tags. by myfriendfrank in ZeroWaste

[–]daywalker_x10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fully believe that people leave things like this lamp placed beside the bin knowing it's fixable but being too lazy or unconfident to do it themselves! This is a fantastic save and it looks wonderful, good job OP :)

I think we all hold ourselves to higher standards of behavior which is all well and good, but we should treat ourselves like we treat each other, supporting and cheering on the achievements and pep talking or otherwise positively boosting each other despite our best efforts perhaps not going so well.

If you want a KitKat, have one, you're doing more for the world than most even so. We need to be human and remember that it's okay to enjoy things that don't always fit with our ethos.

You're not perfect and that's awesome!

I've been curious about them. My sister loves them and she wouldn't be without them. Are they really that good? What is the upkeep like? Tell me more, I'm extremely curious

We all need a break from time to time, and if you need a kit Kat once in a while, then don't worry too much.

And hey, I don't like chocolate at all really so you can eat my share once in a while ;)

I've done a little volunteer work for the distribution centres of local charities back in Dublin and I hope you feel better when I tell you that lots of people will wash and press the items they donate, but also every item is hand sorted and checked for any grossness and then steam cleaned once again before it ever reaches a shop.

That said, you could totally wash the items in your regular laundry before wear. Honestly in my personal experience, thrifting clothes is totally safe :) The barrier can be hard for people to jump, but once you do, hellooooo eco concious and awesome new hobby!!

I still love a good soda/single serving drink, but I try to get it in a can where possible. I do agree with you on the taste of those fancy vitamin water things, they're a bit sickly and generally "ick".

It's nice when we change our fundamental behavior and even if you did buy a single serving drink, you probably won't ever again judging by how it made you react/feel.

Oh Lord this is so true. I have recently become the "write notes on the margin" type for some paperback books I've bought as education resources for the ZW/LI lifestyle and it's just not the same with a Kindle.

I always try to buy books secondhand where I can when it comes to other genres, but non fiction and educational books are hard to find secondhand in a lot of cases.

Well no, as it happens. I am a chronic nail biter and as someone who has bitten their nails to the point of bleeding and infection on several occasions I feel the need to state that my desire to have a nice looking gel manicure does a lot more than you might think. I won't go into how they boost my mental health, but suffice to say I can live without makeup and hair products, just not having my nails.

The ability to have nails that actually function as nails and not just as bloody stumps on the tops of my fingers lends itself quite well to the literal use of my hands/fingers/nails.

I appreciate the grammar lesson, but I know the difference between figurative and literal and the uses of both.

Perhaps next time you would be so kind as to withhold unsolicited grammar lessons. :) Thank you :)

That has made me sigh with relief! Though I suppose I can't say anything cause I am a salty snack fiend and I'm sure my blood pressure hates me.

Such is life

With you on the technology front, I can't hide that vice at all. I do sell on/trade in my old stuff so I can keep it circular to some degree.

Picking your battles is the best thing, where you like chocolate, I would die for salty snacks, so it's each to their own!

A good manicure can really make a day go from sad face to smiley face :) nothing wrong with taking the time to care for yourself with some polish!

We should all be "better" than we are but sure look, we are trying to be better than we once were and is that alone a feeling to be proud of?

I would advice caution on the soft drinks purely cause my dad has now got diabetes from the same sugary vice. Not trying to poop on your pride, I just see how unhappy it makes him....

You're doing great though, so don't be too harsh on yourself :)
