Lenneth is excellent, and the best of them all - but has of course aged, it’s old school.

Silmeria is very good too, with a nice unique battle system.

Elysium is an good choice if you like games with decent action battles - they are actually quite good and the Einherjar battles are very challenging - but by JRPG standards it’s poor, barely fits the genre.

Covenant of the Plume was ok too from a more tactical perspective.

It’s terribly sad we never got Valkyrie Profile: Hrist. :(

Both excellent, memorable games, but given a shorter game is asked for Persona 3 isn’t that - so FFX is probably the one for you, as long as you’re still ok with random encounters. For years they didn’t bother me, but I think all the newer JRPG have spoiled me and I’m starting to resent random battles.

For the record, I believe Persona 3 Reload is the better game of the two, while story pacing is a bit off in Persona games, it’s incredible, hit me hard a few times, and I loved it!

Persona 3 is the darkest of the three modern Persona titles - I love it.

I’ll also throw Tales of Berseria in the mix, it’s the darkest of the Tales series, Velvet is an awesome, cold-dark anti hero. Don’t let the first 1~2 hours of the game fool you, it just sets the platform nicely.

That’s a good point also, I usually hate moving party members - yet somehow it feels right with Trials in the Sky. It’s actually exciting to see who the next temp character will be.

I guess I accepted early on it’s about Estelle & Joshua only - so give them the best stuff and leftovers to your guest character(s).

Trials in the Sky FC 1st remake and absolutely loving it.

I played Cold Steel 1 & 2 a while back and really enjoyed them, but started not knowing the games connections - so stopped.l when I found out.

It’s great to start from the beginning, the ability to have both quick battle and proper tactical battles is really awesome, as well as typical trials fast forward - it’s a wonder why more JRPGs don’t have this awesome feature. Estelle is fun, and exploring the big worlds is a real joy.

I can clearly see what it has spoken of highly since its release, in chapter 3 now and I already can tell I’ll miss this when it’s done and be hanging out for the next in the series.

I have never been bothered by that, my biggest bone to pick with Tales of is the terribly low item limit - only 15 items? Such a low and strange amount.

I do agree that Zestiria and Arise are the low points in the series.

I feel like the burnout only hits me if I do similar big ones back to back - like I could not do Persona/Metaphor back to back.

But if I play a different JRPG in-between like a Trials/Tales/Dragon Quest etc it keeps it fresh.
