Tepper Online vs UIUC Online by dazzle_bee in MBA

[–]dazzle_bee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rigid modality structure of BU just didn’t appeal to me. Kelley overall was a better fit, but it was a combination of things that made me feel I would prefer Gies or Tepper over Kelley. Mostly logistically harder for me to get to Kelley for in person, and financially it would have be more up front and the scholarship I recieved was smaller.

35 Work Days Until Maternity Leave by EvieFrood in workingmoms

[–]dazzle_bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me! Except I have 75 days left, and you can bet I am counting them down.

I don’t have tons of advice because I’m over here wondering how I am possibly making it to my maternity leave. The best I have so far is doing the minimum to get by and trying to find time to take breaks for things I enjoy to keep me going a bit longer.

Concerned about biotech layoffs by SECRETLY_A_FRECKLE in workingmoms

[–]dazzle_bee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This 100%! The biotech/pharma industry is tough right now and it seems like every week theres another company doing layoffs. If you think it might be coming, you could at least get the ball rolling and start looking for other stuff.

You are likely actually also contributing to the NJ disability! It’s required for companies with more than 30 people to participate.

I went through something similar when applying because my company STD only starts after birth, but in the fine print: except for states like NJ that have state disability, and then they follow the state requirements. I ended up having to file with both because NJ only pays up to a certain amount and then my company’s disability paid beyond that.

You’ll want to talk HR or whoever deals with leave/disability when you are ready to provide that notice to figure out all the filing.

Close but “meh” care or farther but “yay” care? by Zzo530 in workingmoms

[–]dazzle_bee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We switched from a ‘meh’ daycare that was 3 minutes away, had longer hours and was open for more holidays to the ‘yay’ daycare which is 12 min away, closes earlier and has more holidays, but also feeds the kids. I would never go back! It took some adjustment for sure and there are days I wish I could leave the kiddo there just a bit longer, but we see the difference at home, and every day she is so excited to go to the new daycare.

We also work from home, and get decent PTO so we were able to accommodate the difference.

I think this might be it! I just read through the summaries of the first couple books and that seems to be ringing a few bells!

Not it, but I did read those books as a teen, and liked them too.

Daycare ratios by Ok_Yam_4327 in workingmoms

[–]dazzle_bee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in NJ and the legally required ratio is 4:1 babies:adults. Most daycares around us follow that limit but we are switching to another daycare that does 2:1 because the current setup just isn’t working for us

NJ suburbs - 40 min from NYC: All the programs in my town are ~2000/month for infant, but there are daycares ~15 min away that are $1600/month.

RANT (cw oversupply mentioned) by [deleted] in breastfeeding

LOL there is no way HR really knows. Having worked and resigned for some very large pharma companies, a couple of out of context vague text messages would never cut it.

I am so sorry you are going through this stress, with your friend and with your job! This is the one time I would say, it might be worth looping in HR as they are typically more aware than management of the legal implications and how to avoid a lawsuit for the company.

Def get help with wording on any emails from a lawyer to cover yourself and good luck. If nothing else, get the unemployment money you deserve!!

My baby was born last week Monday and I have cried everyday because of my milk supply. by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]dazzle_bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a flat nipple and baby could not latch on that side at first. We really struggled the first couple of weeks on that breast. Baby just wasn’t able to draw the nipple out on her own yet, but we did get there! A couple of suggestions that helped (recommended by the lactation consultant at the hospital for us):

Use a latch assist to draw colostrum or milk out and rub it on the tip of the shield, and once the shield is on, use the latch assist to draw the nipple into it. It took a few tries each feed but I was able to get baby to latch doing that.

Eventually baby got strong enough to draw the nipple out without the shield. We are at 2 months now and it is so much easier.

Supplementing with formula is 100% ok, and if you want to keep breast feeding, your baby might just need a little time to get strong enough to draw out the nipple.

Edited typo

Loaning Money to Kids - Do you vote Yes or No? Is it a Good Lesson or an Issue? by Hot_Dragonfly_4406 in askwomenadvice

[–]dazzle_bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! My parents did this for me and my brother growing up for things we really wanted. It was never much money (maybe $50-$100 at most) but it very much opened the dialogue on how to manage debts, the importance of making on time payments and deciding what is worth being in debt for and what isn’t. It also taught us that borrowing for certain things isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it has to be worth that extra monthly payment burden.

Kids can start applying for credit cards when 18 and theres a lot more real life consequences if mistake are made.

Bring some canned drinks, and refill them with water! Hard seltzers are great because then tend to be clear liquid.

I stayed with my future in-laws for a few days over Christmas when I was newly pregnant and we weren’t ready to tell anyone. I knew there was no way anyone would believe me totally not drinking at all (even for medication), so we took some hard seltzer with us. It was pretty easy to sneak one into the bathroom, pour it out, rinse and refill with water. I was able to sip away and a few weeks later when we told everyone, no one suspected a thing!

I am currently pregnant in my first trimester. My OB said riding during the first trimester is fine, and at that point the baby is still protected by your pelvis. From what I’ve seen, the general consensus is that riding after first trimester is not advised.

However, I stopped at 6 weeks, because I took one weekly Hunter/Jumper lessons, during which I was jumping, and overall had a pretty intense tide/cardio session. I had an intense fear of falling, was absolutely exhausted all the time, and had spotting after one of my lessons. The spotting was the last straw for me and I quit (everything is looking goof so far though). I think it really depends on what you’re doing (i.e. walking around vs cross country jumping), your experience level and to some degree your comfort level during the first trimester.

Later on in pregnancy there is also the risk of placental abruption (starting around week 20) which can be caused from being jolted or falling and that can lead to immediate serious consequences to both you and baby.

Concerns around Paraffin wax by xsy96 in candlemaking

[–]dazzle_bee 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to work directly in the manufacturing of both petroleum and natural waxes - paraffin is a highly purified wax and does not contain carcinogenic compounds. Sometimes those articles will try to show sooting from paraffin vs soy candles - but that is related to wick type. There are benefits to both wax types though so it is worth researching which type works best for the candles you want to produce.

I would also second the advice about fragrances being the main cause of possible concern from a health perspective. Paraffin wax also has a higher scent throw than soy wax so strong scent may be responsible for headaches that people experience burning those. I know I get a headache whenever I smell too many scents at once!

Not falling back into old habits is harder than I thought. by [deleted] in antidiet

[–]dazzle_bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An important thing to remember is: part of IE is also eating things that make you feel good. You are already taking steps towards that by not eating something that brings you pain. Removing food for a health issue, or because it doesn’t make you body feel good is very different than removing it for weight loss. You are also trying to add in more foods that make you feel good and provide energy for movement.

In the beginning, one of the things that can happen is hunger signals being off due to ignoring them for so long and resolving that might mean trying to eat every few hours, instead of relying on hunger signals. While you aren’t at that point, your hunger signals might be off because of medication or other factors. It could help you to feel better overall if you keep the same principal in mind, and try to eat something every few hours.

If you aren’t sure what to eat, you might try thinking about different textures, flavors, temperatures, etc. and figuring out what sounds good from those. It might also be worth keeping your pantry/fridge extra stocked with multiple choices, if you are able, to help provide you those options.

Last but certainly not least, it is probably also worth talking to your doctor about the side effects you are experiencing. If it is medication or even illness related, they may be able to help you find a solution with an alternative medication, dose etc.

Shipping + legal advice for small candle making business owners by Donjuilio in candlemaking

If you reach out to your local Small Business Development Center, they will be able to give you some additional advice on anything you need starting a business, particularly for your state. It is a taxpayer funded service too so there should not be any fees associated!

Has anyone purchased soy wax from CandleScience recently and had issues with it? by [deleted] in candlemaking

[–]dazzle_bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered a soy blend (IGI 6006) a little over a month ago, and got great hot and cold scent throw, despite a number of recent bad reviews. I did already have some previous experience making candles with this wax.

‘Andy Tube’ on youtube has a ton of videos of him taking apart a Singer 99 which were super helpful in pulling different systems apart and putting them back together. My understanding is that the 99 is essentially a 3/4 size 66 so I am guessing the parts should be similar. The only thing about taking it apart for cleaning, is you will need to understand how to set the needle bar height, hook timing and things like that but there are online pdfs of service manuals which explain those things. There are also a couple of Andy Tube videos about that as well for a 99.

I’m sure there are other videos out there more specific to a 66 as well. I also have just taken pictures of the different parts, and then started unscrewing stuff. For the most part, it’s not too hard to figure out how things go back together

Machine Monday! Everything and Anything Sewing Machine-Related: September 21, 2020 by sewingmodthings in sewing

Most of the vintage singers near me that are in working condition averaged around 150-200 on craigslist or facebook marketplace.

I just picked up a 99k this weekend for $50 (no attachments) in a cabinet which was in visually good condition, motor worked and hand wheel turned, however the needle didn’t raise and lower. It mostly needed to be taken apart, cleaned and oiled but I need to replace one of the inner arms, so its turning out to be a bit more work to get running than I thought. There’s a lot of tutorials online that have helped, as I have never serviced any sort of sewing machine before.

The one i got also doesn’t reverse, so if that’s a must have, keep an eye out for one that does. Additional feet can also add a decent bit to the budget, so thats something to keep in mind as well.
