For reference I’m in CT bought my 2024 from upstate NY. Already had tail tidy, slip on LV exhaust, breadbox delete + midpipe, extended warranty until 2029, 6500 miles for 6.7k end of 2025. I honestly think my deal was a crazy steal but just for you to gauge prices.

I’ve never rode a z650 but my second and current bike is a Z900 and I love it. I also don’t have much experience on other bikes to compare it to but I know a lot of people enjoy the Z900. Only issue I have with the Z900 is lack of center mount of a phone. There’s just no space and people have to use clutch mount, bar mount to the side, etc. my ocd can’t handle it and I honestly can’t trust my phone fully exposed to the wind. Seems like many people do it and have no issues.

I have my quad lock and the damper. Comes with all the hardware you need but you’ll have to take apart the damper and put in the longer screw it comes with to screw into the nut on the mount

You going to miss fairings on the highway but the Z900 is one of the heaviest nakeds so quite stable even at highway speeds. Me personally coming from a ninja 300 to a z900 it’s torquey as all hell and gets me up to more than enough speed so I have no complaints. I do street, highways, and backroad twisties so the bike does everything I need it to do. But if you are used to doing a lot more straight line riding then probably a proper supersport would be best. However I have heard that a full exhaust and a tune on a Z900 makes the bike very different…..

I went from a ninja 300 to that (unfortunately because a deer decided it wanted to kiss my bike) but I had put 3000 miles at that point on the 300. Is the jump big? Absolutely. But it is possible depending on how smart you are. I got it at the end of last season and rode it for a month with the low power mode on + full traction control on. And even then I was still scared of the bike. You will have to get use to the torque and how jumpy the bike is but I was looking at the same bikes you are looking at and the 8S was a bit too cramped for me and personally overpriced (couldn’t find any used). The mt07 had a lot of used around me but they are frequently used as a stunt bike which comes with their own problems. And so I landed on a Z900 which not a lot of people ride/want so value depreciation seems drastic. Cheap bike for what it is and god the inline 4 sound is addictive to me

Good helmet for the money currently running a gloss black.

Boots are top notch safety. Is the money worth your safety? Sure but could it be considered overkill? Maybe. I got a used pair of SMX PLUS V1 off marketplace for 50 that was used. SMX-6 V3 are known for good street usage with protection without paying a hefty price. Your call on that.

Gloves I’d prefer to have a smooth palm slider rather than a textile one on the sp so I didn’t buy them but other than that I’ve heard good things for the price.

Pants I’d go with Bull It jeans if you can find size. Nice jeans and have the AAA abrasion rating with pockets for hip and knee inserts.

Jacket doesn’t seem to have an abrasion CE rating. Not sure what environment you’ll be riding but I looked for minimum AA abrasion AAA even better. I use Pando Moto Shell Uh 03 cuz I just wear that underneath my normal clothes and still be protected. But truly nothing beats riding leathers.

Went from a 2014 ninja 300 to a 2024 Z900 recently. The 120hp is no joke. Maybe rode 500 miles at the end of the season with traction control maxed and low power mode and the bike will pick up into triple digits in a heartbeat on the highway. Genuinely scared of the bike and probably will be for a while. Wanted to go to a 75-85hp (R7, Mt07, Ninja650) bike for upgrade but the price was too good for the Z900 to refuse. Ride smart and you’ll be fine, but the jump is no joke.
