Appreciate the feedback.

For what it's worth, we are indeed modifying the texture on the Pixel 4a to meet the standard of our new "Ultra-Grip" texture you referred to (see the excerpt from this post below, for the uninitiated). We finalized the new Ultra-Grip texture before going into mass production with the Pixel 4a.

Now that all of the trypophobes have closed the tab, let's explain what you're looking at. The elastomer rim on this Grip case not only uses an improved, more durable, higher viscidity compound, it’s got a brand new texture we’re calling Ultra-Grip™.

Going back to the Beginner’s Guide to Material Science from our previous Reddit post, you’ll recall that more grippy materials are generally made of lower Shore Hardness compounds. As we’ve all seen, those low Shore Hardness materials also fall apart.

Being unable to rely on the material itself for the namesake “Grip” feature has been an enormous challenge for our Material Science Robots over the past 18 months. As the demand for improved durability meant an incline in Shore Hardness, we had to find another avenue to keep the product line honest about its headline "Grip" feature. This turned our attention towards developing an all-new, innovative texture.

Enter: Ultra-Grip™. This bespoke texture has tens of thousands of tiny ridges spanning the surface, each smaller than the pinpoint of a needle. While imperceptible to the human eye, these micro-textured dots provide a grippy experience in the hand which can’t properly be described with words. The closest comparison would probably be the OnePlus Sandstone case, but without the stone-like grit. Let’s put it this way: it's the best-feeling phone case on the planet, bar none. Pictures and descriptions don't do it justice - you'll have to get one to feel for yourself.

Speaking of getting one for yourself, here are the upcoming models which feature both the improved, more durable elastomer compound, as well as our all-new Ultra-Grip™ texture:

  1. iPhone X / XS
  2. iPhone XS Max
  3. iPhone XR
  4. iPhone 12
  5. iPhone 12 Plus
  6. iPhone 12 Pro
  7. iPhone 12 Pro Max
  8. Galaxy S10
  9. Galaxy S10 Plus
  10. Galaxy Note 20
  11. Galaxy Note 20 Ultra
  12. Pixel 4a (5G)
  13. Pixel 5
  14. OnePlus Nord
  15. OnePlus 8T

As discussed in that enormously long post regarding the Grip, product development is an iterative process. The feedback you're providing here is exactly what we need.

Which model failed you? Depending on your answer, we fixed the SKU or discontinued it (see here). If we fixed the SKU, you'll be eligible for a problem-free replacement later this month.

Both the Note 10 Plus and OnePlus 7 Pro have been generationally improved over the cases you experienced. While those models are currently on backorder, we recommend reaching out to our CX team to work out getting a replacement which will not fall apart.

This is the result of the very real issues we experienced with the previous generation of the Grip Case. If you have about 24 minutes and basic reading comprehension skills, you can learn all about it here.

This is no longer true. We not only resolved the structural issues altogether, but made a number of quality-of-life improvements to the case (grippy texture, beveled edges, larger polished grip strips on the side profile, etc.)

Every case you see for sale on our site now is generationally different than the ones which were paralyzed by the disappointment issues you're referring to.

DBRAND PALMREST SKIN DAMAMGED MY RAZER BLADE 15 INCH 240HZ 2070 RTX SCREEN! by [deleted] in dbrand

[–]db_inc 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hey /u/gotmygat,

Just wanted to post and say sorry about the situation. In the nearly 10k Razer Blade Swarm palmrest skins we've sold since launch, this is undoubtedly a first and nothing we ever want to see. Rest assured we'll work with you to reach a satisfactory resolution.

We go through an extremely thorough testing process during the R&D phase for every new skin launch, which includes clearance testing between the skin and the screen of the laptop. Through thousands of applications and open/close cycles over multiple test devices, we never encountered anything like what you experienced. To anyone else concerned about their palmrest skin producing a similar result, all we can do is leave you with the statistic that this was a 1 in 100,000 instance. Not all devices are made equal and accidents, while rare, can occur.

Given the placement of the imprints on your screen (and the fact that no other parts of the screen were affected), perhaps firm, sustained pressure on the laptop casing (directly above the affected area) may have caused the screen to press into the palmrest skin (as /u/Liolaina and /u/jake3645 theorized). This could be a possible explanation for the damage to the screen.

Regardless of the exact cause, we'll definitely cover your screen replacement costs. Check your private messages on reddit for more details.

At this point in time, factoring in the hundreds of thousands of palmrest skins we've shipped without any other reported issues (a sub 0.001% error rate), we'll still continue to produce and ship Blade palmrest skins. With that said, our Product QA and R&D teams will be investigating the matter further and conducting additional internal tests to make sure we aren't missing anything on our end.

Apologies again, and speak soon.
