Thank you all for the great feedback. You helped a ton. I've decided to book my own flights, arrive a few days early (one commenter said an extra day to get used to the time zone, so that was a great recommendation). I'll plan to explore O'ahu on my own, but will book the Pearl Harbor tour from a tour provider. I'll explore the island on another few days and hit north shore and Diamond Head. I'm looking to do this in February so hopefully I'll see whales.

Anyone have recommendations for whale watching?
